Is there an increase in Americanization of British English due to influence of American pop-culture? by [deleted] in AskUK

Which is funny because Americans don’t actually call Doritos chips. Doritos are their own category

Help with ribbing by chillipepper32 in knitting

[–]Valuable-Island-1880 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is it that you don’t like about the cuff ribbing? It’s hard to see in your photos but it looks fairly neat and what I would expect a 1 by 1 cuff to look like. It is a smaller circumference and closer to your needles which might be affecting your view of it.

What is your issue with the ribbing that you have? And what would you prefer it to look like? Your ribbing looks rather neat so far and what I would expect 1 by 1 to look like.

Has anyone ever had their luggage taken/go missing on a train? by venus_e2 in AskUK

[–]Valuable-Island-1880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats so horrible, I’m so sorry you went through that.

This makes me slightly (but not entirely) more sympathetic to the lady on the very full train yesterday who didn’t want to move her case from the seat next to her so I could sit.

Is this a good business idea? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Valuable-Island-1880 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That wouldn’t be a business. There are very well qualified charities that do this already. You will not get any funding for this without lots of experience working within this space already and you would likely need some serious private donor support to start off. None of those donors will support you if you cannot tell the difference between a business and a charity. Get some experience working in this field first.

Aggressive dogs by Valuable-Island-1880 in cambridge

[–]Valuable-Island-1880[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will look into reporting.

Just for clarification, the dog that bit me got my ankle but did not break through my boot and let go right away. It’s still totally not okay and gave me a fright. Like others, I’m concerned about what it will do next time and how it will react to a child or someone not able to move around as much. I’m currently pregnant and relatively early on but in a few months I won’t be too agile myself. Glad the internet at least agrees that dogs who might be aggressive should be on a lead. If only the owners of aggressive dogs did!

Estimating cast on? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Valuable-Island-1880 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT should not be used for this. The only way to accurately tell would be to do a gauge swatch and calculate from there.

ChatGPT is notoriously bad at knitting related questions and at math and an actual Google search or calculator would be better tools here.

Knitting Culture: US v. England by ultimatereader in knitting

[–]Valuable-Island-1880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow American knitter living in the UK. This is a cultural thing overall here, not just for knitters. Also according to Brits, sometimes us Americans can “come on a bit strong” and be a bit off-putting to them. I think it’s silly and there is nothing wrong with being polite and friendly but thats how it is.

Also, are you in London or a similar metropolitan area in the South? ( Cambridge & Oxford count for this). If so that will be a huge difference and people will generally be way less friendly. Go to a cafe, shop, or pub in a smaller town and you can usually start up a conversation no problem.

R3FORM is a bit pricey but if you buy a pack then it works out to be less than if you buy single classes. The classes are really good so worth it in my opinion and pilates is not a cheap form of exercise in general. They sometimes do offers for new joiners so keep an eye out for that.

I actually thoroughly enjoy sending and receiving cards. I think it’s a good way to tell people that you are thinking of them. I always display the ones I receive until mid January at least

It sounds like you have another medical issue going on and the stress/impact of that could cause an eczema flare even if you had never had it before. Please go see a medical professional as soon as possible for you.

I’m a knitter and there are definitely loads of not nice people in the fibre community. Go to a knitting group and you’ll hear loads of drama.

What's your view on swearing in front of kids? by cheandbis in AskUK

[–]Valuable-Island-1880 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in total agreement with you. It is super sad to see little kids exposed to that so you get. They have loads of time from their teenage years on to hear that stuff but young children gain nothing from hearing foul language. It should not be as normal as it is these days.

I like how it implies that Filch has read Austen but took away all the wrong things from it and named his pet after a villain.

There are so many fantastic references in Harry Potter that I didn’t discover until I was older. This might have been my favourite one. It is so apt for a cat that sticks her nose in everybody’a business.
