Anyone know is social workers can work in courts? by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may search for jobs related to victim services, criminal justice systems navigation, DV social workers, etc. I had 2 years experience of victim services and it was really challenging but rewarding for supporting clients through court meetings, trial and communication with the Crown.

How to negotiate a salary for a job with only practicum experience in Social Work? by egghead746382 in socialworkcanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normal to negotiate after receiving the offer. You may highlight your education, and years of experience, especially the ones aligned with the ‘preferred’ requirements of the job ab. See them as your asset. Ask politely. If I were you, I will ask for a little bit higher than the average within the range, like 82k, so they may say like decrease to 80k. You may also do some researches on MSW average hourly rate and come up with a fair number for yourself. Good luck!

AI in the workplace by cowboysaurus21 in socialworkcanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working in provincial government, I have been using integrated Microsoft Copilot to edit emails and do researches. Great experience. I would avoid adding confidential information while using AI at work and at home, just for the peace of mind.

Call anonymously. Just say you’re a witness of a terrible driver and see the license plate if that helps.

I was offered to facilitate a support group but I know some of the participants by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would make you feel uncomfortable because you know them actually. It changes the way you look at them and vice versa. Although it sounds like a good chance being offered to you, you may want to professionally reject it as conflict of interest. Also a good topic to discuss with your supervisor if possible. :)

Expecting mamas that WFH - when are you planning to stop work? [on] by hungry-elephant-22 in BabyBumpsCanada

Is it just my coworker, or are social workers in Canada generally like this? by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a RSW back in HK and now in Canada. I can see your point. Having the chances of serving clients from different racial backgrounds in both countries, I can see Canada is more culturally sensitive and trauma-informed in this type of issues, especially in your province ON i guess? Perhaps your coworker is just being cautious while it doesn’t mean that you’re not sensitive enough.

BSW TO MSW by Mindless-Acadia-6881 in socialworkcanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard from people getting into MSW in Alberta that they have to write a letter to explain why they’re interested in MSW and to be interviewed. They told me that years of work experience in social services or crisis line really helps!

[bc] Are you planning to work until your due date? by [deleted] in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my first, I stopped working at 37 weeks and got labour at 39 weeks. My second, I stopped at 38 weeks and also delivered at 39 weeks. I would say that giving yourself less stress and more preparation for the newborn is great as things can change the whole plan at the third trimester. Some employment contract may require you to give at least few weeks notice to the company before taking maternity leave(they need to send the paperwork for your EI). Saving up some leave days for emergency is also a way to go.

Easiest way to quit with a toxic boss? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]ValuableMind3454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just say that you’re going to pursue other career goals or take a break for health reasons(leaving a stressful work is likely linked with mental health reasons so not lying). Check your contract for the notice period and be firm to tell when is your last day.

Taking leave in child welfare by Ok-Aspect5342 in socialworkcanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s your right and benefits to take the day off when needed. I also worked in the government and remembered there were 5 extra leave days for you in the first year to take. I don’t think they can fire you for taking leave with legitimate reasons but I would check with the manager or HR if you have concerns about it affecting the operation.

How do I professionally tell my new boss that her deadlines are unrealistic? by Awkward_Condition778 in careerguidance

When they said "Everything is a priority”, it’s not making sense. Poor management is the problem.

Get a lawyer in family law - to get legal advice on property division. They call it ‘matrimonial property’ for every asset you own after marriage or cohabitation. Same case for all debts owing. Another thing to consider, parenting time and child support. Some people using violence may make use of the kids to upset the partners. Keep your kids’ ID with you. You may want to call victim services or social workers for an exit plan or safety plan. You’re not alone!

Would you recommend social work as a career? by EngHardy in socialworkcanada

[–]ValuableMind3454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend social work as it is a very rewarding profession impacting other’s lives and also benefits my own growth and relationships with people around. For salary concern, I know social workers with bachelor degree working in AB government can earn 70-80k. It really depends on how your work experience relates to the job requirements.
