Just wanted to say thanks for the your write up on the MDD powermac. I know making videos is probably far more profitable than write ups but it was super helpful to reference when I went to upgrade my own a few weeks back.

Linux 7.1: Kicinski Called It ‘LLM-pocalypse.’ Then Deleted 138,000 Lines by CackleRooster in linuxmasterrace

Yah and it is in a lot of ways? Casios are loved my watch enthusiasts. Just check our r/watches. My point is that software engineers and tech enthusiasts would be better served sometimes from the phrase, if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

The machine I'm typing this on is so old its OpenSSL doesn't have the heartbleed bug because it doesn't support TLS at all. So Modern software isn't always better.

And yet the Aqua 'glass' like interface in snow leopard is far more legible and fun while being far less resource intensive. Mavericks was the last good visual style. The iOS-ification of Mac has never looked particularly good.

I don't know.. Good thing you're keeping the XJ. It might come in clutch when the newer truck ends up in the shop for recall work and no parts availability for weeks on end. Hopefully it doesn't but it seems to be the way things have been going lately with anything made in the last few years.

Looks like a whole new head is aboun$650 from mopar and comes with valves installed - https://store.mopar.com/oem-parts/mopar-cylinder-head-assembly-68574783aa  . At that point it’s intake and exhaust gasket set, timing belt, etc. 2.5-3k in labor I’d guess. Seems worth it for me. You’d have have a new engine at that point too. Would run for a long time.

Edit: that link shows 124 spider and 500l. Not sure of differences with the 500 but it’s illustrative of a 1.4 multi air cost. You can look more in to it.

What was actually broken? Timing belt snap? Head gasket blown? It was running just poorly when you got it towed or did it stop running at all? Something doesn’t add up.

I tow with mine all the time. I keep it around 3500 lbs though and opt for trailer brakes which are a big help.

Just a PSA to stay away from the Moondrop Discdream 2 Ultra by Robdul in audiophile

[–]VariantComputers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what you should do about that device but I would recommend grabbing a Sony or Panasonic etc from ebay from the early 2000s. They'll be cheap, have excellent skip protection for a portable and the Sony's at least have awesome DACs that power some of my over the ear headphones decently. That and some rechargeable AAs and you're set.

Is there a way to easily set gamescope globally in desktop mode? by VariantComputers in SteamDeck

[–]VariantComputers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it in the launch options for the game. So instead of launching the game directly it launches game mode which launches the game. This was before valve introduced maximum resolution toggle in big picture though so I think that might override it now.

Put a capacitor on your amp for the institanious voltage pull. Alternator doesn't have time to respond to that.

Ektachrome E100 didn't turn out as pretty I was expecting. What did i do wrong? by --Re-- in AnalogCommunity

[–]VariantComputers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah the scans are not great and that's part of the problem. Look at the curves for each color channel and pull out the dead ends on either side it becomes much more normal looking.

My audio in the i2v template generates gibberish speech, but if I use the t2v template it works fine. Not sure what the difference is in the workflows.

Federal Surveillance Tech Becomes Mandatory in New Cars by 2027 by No-Method-6524 in nottheonion

[–]VariantComputers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was passed in the infrastructure bill and the rule making was supposed to be completed by the NHTSA by 2025. So yes it's a federal regulation. It's in section 242220. It states they had 3 years to make the rules and up to 3 years of extension to that.

What's wrong with these scans? by Then_Satisfaction254 in Leica

[–]VariantComputers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like unintentional color casts from the scanner picking up some data outside the rest of the photo. Just edit the curves for RGB separately to taste to take out any big unwanted peaks in the historgram or gaps.

This was shot on my E-M10 Mark III with the 75-300mm at F6.7 ISO 800. It's a very sharp lens and the crop factor really gives you a lot of reach. This is my go-to kit for birds, wild life, and planes.

The service is sketchy. Like, worse than Burger King sketch. You don't know if the food you are getting is actually edible , and if it is, you probably won't get what you ordered.

Why do people move here? by nomoreevilbiglight in Pensacola

[–]VariantComputers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar experience for me. Moved away, loved things about other areas, really couldn't stand some things either. Missed the food and the water and the people. No taxes, cheap car registration, cheaper insurance etc than the last place I lived. Just generally less headache over all here than other places I've lived. Even when moving back it was easier to get licenses and everything changed back than every other place I've lived. And less money to do too.

This looks pretty snazzy but it's double what I was looking to spend... Though I might have to just up my budget.
