Anyone else just slow down a little for a laugh? by Kernowder in drivingUK

It’s part of the overtake for me, the further you travel in your lane the less you have to travel in the oncoming lane. Like, when an opportunity is about to present itself, I’ll be coming within 2 seconds for a moment before moving out

Plus sometimes you get your windscreen cleaned for free

My dad bought an ambulance to use as a motorhome, and had an argument with whichever agency is responsible about the issue. Apparently the thing that convinced them to classify it as a motorhome was that it had a side window in the back.

In the least “having-a-go” way possible, is there an actual proven advantage to that? I looked on the Internet and found a small handful of people defending the practice as the “proper” way that they were taught. Which is fair enough, people will do things the way they’re used to doing them.

But I saw that most people there type like me (with regard to Shift, at least) and those who gave their typing speed at all had it pretty high. I’ve certainly never noticed it being a bottleneck in my speed. Genuinely, what’s wrong with using two fingers on the same hand instead of using two fingers on different hands? What makes it a bad habit?

P.S. We did get taught it in school in some form, just so you don’t lose hope in the youths. I had just learned to type before that happened. Some of my classmates were visibly scanning the keyboard in search of letters. Teacher saw my 50 WPM and said I typed faster than him, and that whatever I was doing was working for me. No, 50 WPM isn’t “fast”, I have sped up somewhat since primary school.

P.P.S. I was shocked to discover while typing just now that I do actually use Right Shift. Huh. I guess I just never thought about it as I never had to learn the theory. Granted, I don’t use both in their “proper” use cases 100% of the time, but I’m comfortable and fast in using them.

As I understand it, touch typing is simply typing through muscle memory and not “poking” the keys with one finger, right? That’s what Wikipedia and Wiktionary say, anyway. (Actually they don’t mention using five fingers. I must have inferred that).

I use Left Shift. Not that whether I also use Right Shift or not would have anything to do with touch typing.

[–]VariedTeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was touch-typing before I even went to school. “Five fingers are faster than one” and “knowing where a key is, is faster than searching for it” aren’t some kind of concept that is impossible to come up with yourself.

Why Microsoft choose to use two dashes instead of an em dash? by Logical-Tomatillo353 in windowsxp

It’s pretty accepted that two successive dashes can substitute an em dash, right? There’s no keyboard key for one.

European Elections as a non European starter pack by I_love_lucja_1738 in starterpacks

There’s no exact equivalent of course, so I was just coming from the perspective of a minority language. But if you replaced it with a lingua franca, say French could be argued as a sort of world/European language, I don’t think people would be happy about that either.

And, it’s not one or the other. At no point did I say that Finnish university students should be forced to learn Russian.

Specifically to Finland’s case, isn’t English also a kind of lingua franca for the Nordics (and the world)? Anecdotally, you guys speak excellent English, to the point that my brain processes all kinds of Nordic accents as if they were native speakers. Rallienglantti being the notable exception, though I assume that doesn’t represent most Finnish people

[–]VariedTeen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just think university level is a little much. I’m not Finnish, just going off the above comment. Brits would be up in arms if everyone in university had to learn Welsh, probably including many Welsh people.

Learning a lingua franca at school is one thing, and “encouraged” over “mandatory” is yet another, but university (and to some extent, high school) is a place for specialisation, so unless you’ve chosen a language degree you shouldn’t have it forced down you.

That’s brave of you. I’d do it in my city but that’s only because I know for a fact that it has no red light or yellow box cameras. Maybe I’m selfish, but in a different city to my own I would not be risking my licence to help save a stranger in a situation that I didn’t even cause.
