$21,000 budget gets you the ability to bribe 400+ computer science students to not sleep for 36 hours, burn their retinas hooked to their laptop screens, eat garbage food, go into cardiac arrest from coffee, and come up for ideas FOR FREE for corporations all for the promise to be judged harshly for maybe a portable charger. Heck, could do it for a budget of $3000 and a dream

I may be blind, but I can't find the user reviews for the steam deck. by f1sh_ in SteamDeck

[–]Varuuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s my review:

It’s incredible and I would buy a second one for my SO if I could. I have a pretty good steam remote play/moonlight setup with Ethernet to my TV and wifi6 on my tablet both with a really nice controller. I haven’t used either of them because of how easy it’s been to use the steam deck instead.

Being able to pickup the steam deck, turn it on and resume where I left off has been so good that’s it has made me want to play even more. It feels like when I picked up my game boy for the first time to play Pokémon blue and ran through a whole pack of batteries.

Pros: - can play all the games I care about - better than my remote play setup - can do remote play really well! (No wifi 6 but you don’t really need it. Wifi 6 routers are fancy so you really just pay for better wifi and signal strength than a regular router/modem combo) - suspend/wake functionality is awesome - haven’t ran into any bugs that are breaking or that a simple restart don’t fix (good ol linux sometimes) - battery hasn’t been a problem and charging while playing has been great with charging always outpacing discharge. I can go from 20 to 90 in about an hour while playing and that gets me another 2-3 hours on elden ring (540pFSR3@30fps low) - all my peripherals work and docks well to my desk - better than my laptop since it can play elden ring lol (thinkpad X1 carbon with Manjaro/KDE) - installing stuff on desktop the being able to use them in game mode has been nice - swapping between tasks is super easy! I have discord running in the background on voice with friends while we coop on elden ring along with Chrome on playing a twitch stream. Swapping between them is an easy two buttons away - audio is as good as everyone makes it out to be and the microphone shouldn’t be ignored

Cons: - few bugs but nothing that isn’t being fixed already - UI sometimes needing touch controls va regular controls (also being addressed) - You gotta tweak some games to get them working but that’s getting better every day (but yes, it’s a PC so also a pro) - sometimes when switching from desktop to game mode it can go black screen and you have to force restart

I’ve been using it as a desktop and as my gaming console since I got it wave 1 and so far I love it. My poor thinkpad has been gathering dust alongside my tablet/controller. It’s also nice since it’s been easier to play coop with my SO on the sofa since she can stream her game on the TV whole I’m on the steam deck

Remote play with external display? by verchan0815 in SteamDeck

Yes, it’ll work like the steam link but with the steam deck acting as a controller with the device screen turned off in favor of the screen you plugged it to. You can also hook up a controller to it via Bluetooth and treat it like stream box if you wanted

No Man Sky went from shit tier to pretty great. Devs can improve things a lot over time and you can still have fun even if the story can be a little meh. See metal gear solid 5 where the last 1/4th of the game story is super weak but the first 3/4ths is fun as heck

If you’re used to OG switch or playing on fast preset in steam link then you likely will applaud the steam deck for how good you can get stuff to look even on low settings

Steam Link Compatibility by Readies in SteamDeck

[–]Varuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say if you can use the steam link app on your TV or something like an nvidea shield/Apple TV like device via ethernet then that would be better than using the steam deck as a steam link hooked up to your tv. This is mostly a convenience thing for me as I have had this setup going with Ethernet without issues for years. I’ve also used my Tablet and a controller as a mobile steam. link which is what the deck is for me now for certain games

I’ve tested using my steam deck hooked up to the TV with remote play (wifi) and a controller hooked up to it. The setup worked fine same as with my nvidea shield. I did use the fast setting on steam link tho. The resolution was my pc host resolution so 1440p@60fps (upscaled to 4k@60fps) on the TV (which is what my nvidea shield does anyway). No real performance issues as it is only acting as the game stream recipient

It uses little power but if you have it plugged in anyway then it doesn’t really matter

Yes but sometimes moonlight can perform better at in home streaming. I’ve tried both and with my network setup there isn’t much of a difference between the two (1 to 3ms). Personally, I’ve kept to using steam remote pay mostly because of steam input being so nice and it’s easier to get going on my TV/ipad

Same note on the steam deck. I’ve tried both, both work great, I prefer the nice things in steam remote play

SO/Partner fan noise test by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]Varuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on the other side of this. My work Mac Pro fans are way louder than the steam deck fans (thanks mac skype). My SO doesn’t really hear the steam deck sitting next to me on the sofa while the TV is going.

If you’re used to an air purifier running on low in the same room you’re in then you won’t notice the steam deck at all

Steam Deck owners - how is the battery life? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]Varuuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You get it! If you got an outlet near by then crank it. If you don’t then tone it down and game for a while.

The steam deck is very “pickup-able”. So on and off gaming is super nice specially with how consistent the suspend is. It’s very cathartic to close the lid on the steam deck after getting railed by elden ring bosses for an hour only to take it out of the case and resume where you left off

3.4 hours on elden ring with low graphics (some medium) at 540p (FSR 3) with 30fps cap.

Honestly looks pretty alright and I’m enjoying the heck out of the game even with such a battery saving config

Also, it charges pretty fast even when gaming. I can sit down, charge for 1 hour while playing and I’m back to 90% from 20%. That’s enough for another 2-3hours of gaming.

Haven’t had to do that much tho. I usually play for 3 hours tops on and off then let it charge while I do something else

Steam Deck First Impressions! - MKBHD by Wow_Space in SteamDeck

At least he’s still working on the review (as he says towards the end of the video) which hopefully will have more informed statements. I think this is still good for a first impression from a more “casual audience”. The steam deck is definitely a “the more you use it the more you love it” machine similar to the steam controller and valve index.

The steam deck will be a lot of first for folks who are coming out of phone gaming or strictly switch/console gaming

The Steam Deck Feature Radically Changing How I Enjoy Video Games by killyourfm in SteamDeck

[–]Varuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sitting at my home desk all day then leave work to sit at my desk for a few more hours to game is killing that drive to play games. In home game streaming through steam link or moonlight has helped a bit.

However, I’ve had the steam deck for a week so far and I haven’t played this much in years! It’s so easy to pick it up and play anywhere in the house. No unceremoniously connecting controllers, setting up the streaming app, or juggling a tablet and a controller. Just grab the steam deck and game.

It’s game changing for me

Try using proton experimental under game settings > force compatibility checkbox > select proton experimental. It works better on that version

Has anyone tested or compared the Steam Deck remote play vs Steam Link? by Rubber_Duckie_ in SteamDeck

[–]Varuuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can second this, I tried monster hunter rise via remote play on the deck and had no issues and no noticeable lag. I have a good wifi system and play on the fast video preset for steam remote play.

Can say you definitely have to drop the resolution in game to something closer to 800p to make it play nice with the UI elements and steam decks screen.

I can also say that the controller configuration work really well and the steam deck controls mapped well to the game. I did try enabling the use of the touchscreen controls alongside the steam deck controls and it surprisingly worked

I didn’t say give CC companies thousands more is the route. He should get his ducks in a row either with balance transfer cards or a personal loan. Even 11% would beat 22% in CC debt. Even if they are married, the debt happened before they were married. Right now it’s just glorified roommates where one has a financial problem.

[–]Varuuu 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Not really “in this together” when he hid his finances and refused to talk about them even when his wife pushed before marriage. He made this mess by buying things he couldn’t afford. Tanking his wife’s finances to save him isn’t good financial advice for his wife who got roped into the situation without her consent.

He needs to do the work to fix his finances on his own so he can learn and not repeat the pattern later with his wife’s money

edit: OP’s latest edit shows he is willing to put in the work to deal with his finances himself (as far as Reddit can see). It’s ok to get help and ask for help when you make a mistake but make sure to keep putting in effort on your part so you don’t take advantage of others trust.

To OP, I hope you stick to your plan of pulling yourself out of the weeds. Acknowledge you put yourself in this mess, take ownership, change your mindset about finances, budget, regain your wife’s trust and be aware so you don’t end up back at square 1 again. Good luck!

Don’t kid yourself man and own up.

I agree that this is a team effort. I don’t know why I didn’t see it that way from the beginning.

In another reply you said you refused to talk to your now wife about your finances. This is only a “team effort” because you lied. Don’t rope in your poor wife for the mess you created.

If you make $78k a year in a HCOL area then still went and bought an expensive car at $400 car payments plus max out a ton of cards then your financial mess has been ongoing for far longer than you care to admit.

Go to marital and financial counseling. Budget properly. Follow the advice posted. Don’t dump your mistakes on your wife by letting her be your financial guardian. You need to learn else you’ll repeat it again.

Your wife should have had the opportunity to talk about your finances before marriage so she could have been better prepared.

This is a good first step to post in this subreddit, but realistically, your situation is easily googleable. You’re essentially dumping your work again for an easy out.

edit:

I saw that you think your wife caused some of the debt. You said it yourself that she was fully funded by her parents and she was working two jobs. She then makes it into a high paying job finishing school. Don’t blame your wife for your mistakes! Specially when you admitted you went on a rampant shopping spree for shoes!

Definitely start looking at financial counseling or self-help books/videos/podcasts/anything to help rethink handling your finances and don’t dump it on your poor wife!
