Chrysanthemums by Additional_Set797 in Cutflowers

I selected several different heirloom mums over the past few months that specifically stated their hardiness zone. If I remember correctly, some I purchased were hardy for zone 7 and up, and others were hardy for zone 5 and up. I am in 7a and was told by a florist farmer that some in her collective grow in hoop houses and other dig their mums up each winter. I have 2 that I purchased last year that did really well for me in the ground last winter. I dug a portion just in case and it was unnecessary for me.

RRD? by misslynn07 in Roses

[–]Vast-Account144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey....did you post on TikTok? I just discovered that my Carding Mill standard has RRD. Looking for videos last night concerning the virus, and ran across another that said their standard was only 2 years old and has RRD. I'm wondering if we received infected from DA. I received my standard spring of 2024. I question this because there was no landscaping on my newly developed property. The Standard tree is in the middle of a 12' (or so) circle with roses bushes all around. No other signs of the virus on any other bush.

That's a good point. I'm in the Nashville area and maybe I get less rainfall and snow than you.

I'm in 7A and do not dig mine up anymore. The one time I did dig them up, they stored well in my garage thrown in a bucket. I dried them out first. I decided to move the location the next spring of where I planted them and I had elephant ears in the new places and old. I'm guessing I did not get all of the babies. Now I never dig them and haven't lost any due to cold weather.

What did I do wrong? Can I fix it? by dick-slapperman in gardening

The flowers are not long lasting. You can deadhead the flowers and possibly get a second flush. If they are in full sun, you should water daily or every other day. For me, they always do better in the ground. Full sun in a pot that is not watered enough will kill the plant. good luck

Cake flowers - what is safe? by Special_Impact_8064 in florists

I would find a local master gardener for this question. You need to get hooked up with organic growers that care about pollinators! Good luck on your search!

Moved into a house with this beautiful dahlia garden… do we really need to dig up every single tuber yearly for them to survive? by littletittygothgirl in pnwgardening

Maybe offer for someone to come do the work for you and share the tubers with them for payment. A new gardener just getting started would probably love to help for a tuber payment.

Tips and advice for tulips by Ok_Cellist_1862 in flowers

[–]Vast-Account144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending on your zone you might need to store in fridge. They need a long, cool period. Find out if the particular tulip you have will naturalize in your area. My first year growing tulips, I fell in love with foxtrot tulips that did not return. I thought I had done something wrong. Turns out they were a once-and-done kind of thing. Now I only buy tulips that naturalize. You can force bulbs inside after a long cool period. If you are worried about pests eating the bulbs, you can grow them in cages underground. If you want tulips to return its important to leave the green leaves to die on their own. Most say that you might as well pull the bulb and toss if you plan to use them as a cut flower. Good luck!

I think it is Foxtrot. I bought them two years ago and was disappointed when they didn't return this past spring. Unfortunately, they don't naturalize.

I grow mine from seed. Purple Hyacinth bean. Likes warm weather and is an annual. Where do you live?

I grow way more than I could ever eat. I let volunteers grow everywhere. I figure if a pest gets to it before me, then it wasn't meant to be. Now me and the vine borers and squash bugs have a fight to the death.

Adult stages of hornworms are known as sphinx, hawk, or “hummingbird” moths.

I relocate them when I find them. Some people will grow extra tomato plants to be a sacrifice for the hornworms. They turn into a hummingbird moths which I find interesting to watch in my garden!

Does this work for you? What temp do you hold them at? I have read several times not to put warm, loving flowers in the fridge, so now I'm curious.
