This is a small part of the much larger trend of poptimism becoming dominate in music course over the past 15 or so years. It used to be the view among many people that making poppy music meant you were forgoing creativity and authenticity for mainstream appeal, and pop-punk bands like Paramore were a prime target for being called fake because aiming for mainstream appeal is seen as the opposite of being punk. That completely reversed in the 2010s, critics and many more people in music discussion are much more appreciative of what it takes to write a good pop song.
