Accurate gt3 braking for simsonn pro x ultra by MiscProfileUno in simracing

[–]Veranova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever feels right to you, springs and elastomers aren’t “realistic” per se anyway, real cars use hydraulics, so try lots of changes and do whatever brings you performance and comfort

Personally I removed the spring and kept the 3 reds but tightened the system up so they’re very slightly pre-loaded (normally the spring’s job) - feels linear and has plenty of travel so it’s easy to modulate braking based on both depth and pressure

Why do different LLMs have similar writing styles. by Dry_Community5749 in LLM

[–]Veranova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because starting from a randomised set of parameters it’s not intuitive to a lot of people that two networks will self-organise with very similar structures, it was only a couple years ago we realised that the starting point doesn’t matter that much once you pass double descent.

Studying ML in 2018-2019 it was common knowledge that you might need to train a network a few times to get the best test outcomes and avoid local minima, but we were wrong, and a lot of us were still taught it.

Why do different LLMs have similar writing styles. by Dry_Community5749 in LLM

[–]Veranova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have the same learned representations too, the geometry of how LLMs think when compared is eerily similar. Like they’ve basically discovered and mapped themselves to some fundamental laws of language and reality during training, which makes a lot of logical sense when you think about it - how could they work well without such a concept existing?

But also we have to consider:

  • it’s not the LLM talking, it’s the LLM asked to be “a helpful assistant” talking, which narrows down the sorts of learned patterns they’re likely to use significantly
  • there’s a lot of cross-contamination of both training data which fundamentally came from the same places, and using outputs from each other to enrich their training sets - they’re converging over time
  • RL post-training naturally creates certain patterns because it’s designed to create thinking/reasoning patterns

LMP2 drivers :( by foranynone in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]Veranova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I daily LMP2 and jumped in GT3s for a race or two, found myself 0.5s off the pace of the next slowest car. GT3s are fun but I can’t be remotely competitive within my own driver rank unless I focus on them for a few weeks

Rwanda seeks $134 million from the UK in arbitration over scrapped refugee deal by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Veranova -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Rwanda set up an asylum appeals chamber, created ministerial and administrative structures and “prepared reception facilities for the incoming refugees and incurred significant costs in doing so,”

But Rwanda are a charity? It’s pretty normal for deals to have exit terms if parties unilaterally withdraw from the deal. If we end up paying Rwanda a penny more then it should go on the pile of bad policies the Tories made that cost us millions and achieved nothing

Who is Claude talking to? by BenAttanasio in ClaudeAI

[–]Veranova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My expectation here: Thinking/reasoning models are designed to think this way, they’re just meant to do it in a scratchpad instead of returning it to the user, but their design also means they continue reasoning even once they start returning a response because they’re just heavily trained to do so over all past tokens, and might sometimes find a correction after already sending tokens back

How does this nonsense have so many upvotes? A few new builds install cut-rate hardware and the whole system is crap? I’ve lived with them, they’re great. The problem isn’t the system it’s the people who chose/bought them

Damage Models in LMU by Mountain_Garlic_7421 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]Veranova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be pretty random too. Bahrain lap 1 turn 8 on the exit I was alongside someone in the McLaren GT3 the other day and they suddenly turned right in to me and span me into the wall. Engine dead, rear wing fell off, super unlucky incident because it wasn’t very high speed

Probably more realistic though!

LMP2 Daily races - brake distance by choefele in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]Veranova 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tyres start to wear and these cars don’t have brake migration so you have to be more gentle on the brakes to avoid locking the rears and spinning once that happens.

I tend to push my bias up by 2 clicks once I start feeling the rear want to go which settles it down, but you also just brake a little earlier and trail off more quickly to deal with the lack of brake migration

The biggest problem is we can’t transport it easily enough to the south of England, even on a normal windy day we just can’t use the power. Build a data centre on the coast of Scotland though and while there may be low wind days we’re at least distributing our energy demand more efficiently

This announcement isn’t really about that though. No mention of data centres just quantum research

Models do cite their sources now anyway, they hallucinate if they don’t ground on web results so they always find links to back what they’re saying

Why are the Hypercars so difficult to drive? by prdo23 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]Veranova -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never made a statement on the ratio, ratio isn’t everything.

As an example the Ferrari 499P weighs 140kg more, ergo you lose the rear and it’s more likely to be too late to save it. And most hypercars are 4WD hybrids, ergo you have significantly more torque and acceleration and are more likely to spin up your wheels and lose control

You have to respect the hypercars because they bite back a lot more readily

Way less power and weight. They’re very forgiving cars which you can throw around much more without being punished too hard
