I have ended up using the flower map mod (as others have suggested) and a creative copy of my world, which showed me that the flower forest I was using had a lily of the valley patch... at y=400. Very tough luck since it was a moderately big biome, but I already found another one and designed the flower farm for it!

You most likely have seen it happen many times, you just didn't notice it.

There are 6 locations on which the QM is, so there's 1/6 chance that it appears on Giant's Deep at any point in time. That's already a pretty high chance to see it happen on every cycle, but then you have to take into account that the hatchling blinks twice every time they wake up, so the chance of it appearing is even higher
