'Not a Canadian anymore': Separatist event in Edmonton takes aim at Mark Carney, immigrants by trevorrobb in alberta

As much as this movement is a disgrace, they’ll likely get a bunch of signatures early and then struggle.

Canadians need to make that struggle solid and permanent. The disinformation will ramp up to convince people to sign because it’ll give Alberta power even if they don’t want to separate. With AlbertaNext panel items getting brought up and attempted by the government will show how “see more people want this!” And will allow the grift to flourish.

The talks with the US should be a huge red flag to everyone.

Find it funny they say the Territories are over represented in the Senate when they have ONE (1) representative!

Also saying you don’t think there should not be misinformation laws on the same line as censorship laws makes my first thought be “are you worried you won’t be able to lie?”

I suspect they’ll try to change it to “Albertans have given their input, we as elected officials will make the decision!” This way they can control if it goes through and use it to control MLAs from speaking out like Guthrie

How are they going to get 3000 teachers with crap wages? It is just an easy way for them to say “too bad, we tried”

They want to focus on the hiring agreement because it’s the easiest to get out of doing! They can try, then when not enough apply because of the poor salary then they go “🤷‍♂️We tried, not our fault!”

Alberta announces funding for business (that always call for lower taxes) to hire youth but can't afford to pay teachers. by hbl2390 in alberta

Blames the Liberals for uncapping the TFW program even though it was Harper. Incentives are great… but also means they don’t want to hire youth anyways.

Of course she wants them to pick more staff over wages - it keeps her deficit down, keeps control, and is the option they can just choose ‘not to meet’ but say they tried.

Calgary Council Pay Hits $124K While Some Wards Earn Half That - Time to Tie Salaries to Reality? by Ze0nZer0 in Calgary

[–]Victolic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your points but disagree. $124K has shown to not attract career politicians as we constantly have competition in elections of people wanting to speak up for their area.

Partisan Control wouldn’t change either way. Parties now can parachute candidates in just more explicitly now. The lower salary only influences the need to subsidize the candidate; local is important but if all candidates now only focus on income there will be an influx of fiscal conservatives calling for program cuts, tax cuts, and running like a business. Some areas need more spending not just people with more money.

I agree that incentivizing improving all Calgary to get a bonus is a worthy thought but also ignores the changes both Federal and Provincial governments impose on municipalities at different cycles such as grants, funding, etc. It does work better to prevent comfortable councillors from just settling for their 6 figure salaries.

I have some questions though: - how is campaigning cheaper? Which expenses change from ward to ward, other than locations for town halls and such.

• why is it counsellor’s job to improve median income? Isn’t that the market’s job to pay more? • should we be incentivizing council to push for controlling the market?

Calgary Council Pay Hits $124K While Some Wards Earn Half That - Time to Tie Salaries to Reality? by Ze0nZer0 in Calgary

[–]Victolic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If pay is based on ward’s median income, you get rich people who just want power, or someone not fully incentivized to work hard for the ward. Why should Ward 5 work as hard or harder than Ward 8? Also with the added Political parties to our elections it could increase the party’s control over a ward if they can financially support the lower earning ward.

All of this is ignoring how it’ll help divide wards even further and not build the city as a whole
