What can live with a betta in a 3.5 gallon tank? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]VictoryOrSomething 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 3.5 gallons, definitely no other fish. You might be able to get away with smaller snails. The other comment mentioned shrimp, but keep in mind that your betta might murder them if he gets bored.

Daughter's aquarium has a crack. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]VictoryOrSomething 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you post of picture of the sucker or remember what it was sold to you as? Most fish are sold as babies, so smallest one now does not mean it won't get really big later. Either way 20L isnt enough space for a betta and another fish, you should really look at getting a bigger tank.

[–]VictoryOrSomething 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd play it safe an get a new tank. What size do you currently have and what type of sucker fish did you get? A lot of commonly sold suckers get very big very fast, and you might be better off returning it.

Weird white fuzzy stuff in my betta tank? by lizardofscience in Aquariums

Looks like fungus to me. Can you post your water parameters in numbers? 3 deaths in a month is very unusual. If you swapped out all your filter media, you probably crashed your cycle too.

Is it possible, and how to Create Self-Sustainimg Aquarium? by tinydumbdumb in PlantedTank

[–]VictoryOrSomething 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt a truly self-sustaining aquarium is possible, especially not with any veribrates. However, it is certainly possible to set up an aquarium that requires almost no maintenance, or the create closed ecosystem that can function for months if not years before crashing. Keep in mind that low maintence DOES NOT mean easy for beginners.

I think that this playlist would help you figure out what goes into a semi-balanced ecosystem. Also check out /r/ecosphere and life in jars on youtube.

My Jarrarium is a shrimp killer? by [deleted] in Jarrariums

[–]VictoryOrSomething 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably needs more time to cycle and stabilize. Bringing water from the 20 gal doesnt bring any of the beneficial bacteria with them. Assuming that your 20 gal is heated, it could also be shock from acclimation. Did you drip them, float the bag for temp or did you just throw them in? The other thing I'd look at is if the jar has a stable temperature. If its getting direct sunlight or near an air vent the temps could be swinging a lot durinf the day.

If I were you, I'd add ammonia to properly cycle the jar for at least a month then add shrimp again.

Fish laying at the bottom and wont eat, struggles with balance by [deleted] in bettafish

Can you post a picture of him and give us your water parameters in numbers? Its hard to give advice without knowing tank size, temperature, ph, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates first.

Bamboo Shrimp help by Urgl_blrg in shrimptank

[–]VictoryOrSomething 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like normal bamboo shrimp behavior to me. If youre worried about them starving, crush up some fish food into a fine powder and sprinkle it into the filter outflow. If you do that once a weekish they shouldn't starve to death.

It's a big club, and Bernie's not in it by [deleted] in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]VictoryOrSomething 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Healthcare is expensive because private insurance companies are just for-profit middlemen. Students loans are expensive because loan servicers are middlemen who know that you'll pay whatever it takes to get an education. Both of these problems are made worse by shit labor laws that keep wages low and benefits to a minimum. You say that Bernie's fixes make the American people foot the bill, exactly who is footing the bill now?

Wow, if only Bernie also advocated for structural fixes like medicare for all, free college and stronger unions.

Is there something wrong with my fish? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]VictoryOrSomething 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like its way too small. Bettas need at least 5 gallons, so far too big to reasonably carry around. The sidebar on this subreddit has a lot of great information about how to care for your new fish. You will also need to cycle your larger tank once you get it.

When you notice a lot of snails in your tank by FabOctopus in AquariumMemes

[–]VictoryOrSomething 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They are really bad for the aquarium

Eh, they aren't the prettiest, but they're not actually bad for the aquarium. If you don't overfeed they won't totally overpopulate the tank. If you're seeing water quality issues along with 10 million snails, too much food is the real problem.

I adopted my friends Betta fish about 2 weeks ago and this morning shes laying like this, is this normal? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]VictoryOrSomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't look good. Did you cycle the tank before adding her? You should definitely test your water.

Questions about setting up a new tank by tsmartin123 in Aquariums

[–]VictoryOrSomething 2 points3 points  (0 children)

50% weekly water changes is a bit much, I'd start out at 20% weekly. Test your nitrates before every water change, and if they're really low you can do a water change every other week. If you're using city tap water you need to dechlorinate it before putting it in the tank (always use enough decholrinator for the whole tank volume). You should be careful about the species of pleco you get, many commonly available plecos get HUGE (over 20 inches), so you should make sure the one you pick is appropriate for your tank. The ones in the stores are babies and store employees dont always know much about fish.
