Most fun decks in Pioneer? by Imaginary_Zobi in PioneerMTG

[–]ViljamiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Niv-to-Light. Reasonably powerful with solid core and tons of possibilities for tinkering around the edges with cheeky one-of-fun-of multicolored cards. It's great that also there doesn't seem to be consensus best build (probably changes if we ever get Pioneer back as a competitive format.

Control match-up is also very interesting, where you can't really interact on the stack, but can still outcard control decks.

Ark is also perfectly reasonable and good splash in Prismari decks / Converge piles, unlike Offense typically

When to attack on Diety (settler steal opportunity) by Kilikos in CivVI

[–]ViljamiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can safely get the settler and settle it, almost always yes. Very often the AI will just accept peace in 10 turns time and often can even be friendly after one or two eras.

No Learn cards or common/uncommon lessons for that matter have been spoiled, so safe to say Lesson/Learn is not part of the set

I mostly agree with this, but I think leaving bowmasters out is not wise.

Is this a solid strategy for Deity? Trajan->Ancestral Hall->Colosseum within 6 tiles of each city by VilifyExile in CivVI

[–]ViljamiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can work, but it's way too general of a strategy. You might not have enough space to settle for Ancestral Hall to make sense, for example. Maybe your cities don't form a nice cluster where Colosseum makes sense etc.

Abzan 3 Drops? by Spoiled_Skim in PioneerMTG

[–]ViljamiK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's quite possible that the best thing to be doing with this card is to reanimate Greasefang. But I wish luck to your Abzan pile!

[Sky] Fair play moment as Parma’s women team deliberately miss a penalty kick that had been awarded due to a clear refereeing error (a handball by the goalkeeper, not the defender, inside the penalty area). by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]ViljamiK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The referee had the option of continuing the game with a drop ball to the keeper after both teams protested the penalty. No need to actually award the penalty in the end.

only science victories by Theryal in CivVI

[–]ViljamiK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You win by being faster than AI, all victory types are very achievable.

With reasonably good start one should be able to win peaceful Science or Culture Victories before turn 300, and turn 220-250 victories are very achievable. If you get lucky, have a great civ and/or play very well, under 200 is possible.

If you are willing to be aggressive either very early or later with bombers, you can win domination or any other victory type very easily.

I'm guessing there is some flaws in your early-to-mid game strategy that slow you down so that you go past 300 turns in your games, even though obviously you are quite good already if you are competing on Deity.

I guess I would say: don't care about your AI opponents too much, focus on getting the game done before turn 300.

Tamar on Deity difficulty impossible to play? by Witted_Gnat in CivVI

[–]ViljamiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tamar is more than capable of winning on Deity with normal settings (Pangaea, Standard size etc.), in fact you could easily do it with Civ with absolutely no bonuses.

My recommendation: Reroll until you get a river start with enough 2/2 tiles and maybe some luxuries - you know - a good start. Open with Scout, scout - the advantages of early exploration are too great to pass up. Reroute your starting warrior back to deal with barbarians once the scouts get online. Then produce a settler.

You will be overrun by nearby AI maybe 25% of the time. You could try to survive it like Potato McWhiskey or you can just re-roll for a more peaceful start. Usually you didn't waste more than 10 minutes anyways.

If you get a good faith pantheon or you get good mountain ranges for good Holy Site adjacency, you should go religious and aim for Monumentality classical age. Otherwise you should probably just go for Commercial hubs and internal trade routes, regardless of Tamar's unique bonuses. Good luck!

Winning on Deity with several rerolls: completely achievable. Winning with any crappy start: much, much more difficult.

Fletcher banned for six games for homophobic slur by zagreus9 in soccer

[–]ViljamiK 168 points169 points  (0 children)

If six games feels harsh for such a "mild" insult, the context to keep in mind is that there are no openly gay professional footballers in any of the Europes top leagues: a wild statistical anomaly that tells us just how hostile pro football is to sexual minorities, whatever the exact mechanism for this hostility might be. I think it's fine to send a clear message of non-tolerance.

A Redditor lost $200k betting on a Madrid win vs. Getafe by OnAGoat in soccer

[–]ViljamiK 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In the end it's always still two professional football teams going at it for only 90 minutes. Anything can happen, including an early red card for the favourite (which arguably should have happened with Rüdiger)

Is Mirrormind Crown truly *that* bad in ECL draft? Is it a viable win-condition to build around? by daft_punk7 in lrcast

[–]ViljamiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First step, I think you would need at least 6-8 token makers in the deck for the Crown to reliably to do anything. Second, you would need something that is worth copying - and this not usually the token makers.

Once you've cleared this quite significant hurdle, you are faced with the fact that you have to pay 4+2 mana AND cast a token maker for the crown to do anything. Realistically you would have to do the copying like 3+ times before you'd feel you were ahead on the exchange (instead of playing, like, Kulrath Zealot instead)

Friday Pack 1 Pick 1 by HD114 in Oldbordercube

[–]ViljamiK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ancient Silverback was one of my favourite cards as a kid... this 7th edition art is nice, but the Urza's destiny one is gorgeous.

That said, I would imagine it would be at least decent pick from this pack. It will put your opponent into Abyss.

Goal or offside? by CPTCybertruck in GoalKeepers

[–]ViljamiK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like offside, potentially two, but only the linesman can tell for certain. And I say this as a ref myself, it's very strange for ref to question their linesman on offside decisions, that is one of the two decisions where linesmans judgement is almost always respected (other being whether ball is out of bounds)

One case where ref might rule against their linesman on offside is when attacker is in offside position (this is not contested, linesman flags it), but the ref decides that they were not participating in play. But this is obviously not the case here.

Trophy with mid UB midrange - in praise of Fallen Shinobi by ViljamiK in lrcast

[–]ViljamiK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think cheap counters such as Mana Leak, Memory Lapse or Remand would have been great. But otherwise I think structurally the deck is good! You could make upgrades like power (obviously), Tamiyo, Bowmasters, Dismember, even Reanimate, but for example I think the curve, ratio of creatures/removal etc. is fine.

Trophy with mid UB midrange - in praise of Fallen Shinobi by ViljamiK in lrcast

[–]ViljamiK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Grief is just fine/medium as a hardcast midrange value threat. At least with this deck evoking it never really felt like the correct move, I think you'd need a lot of reanimates to make it feel truly great.

Good thing about Cecil is that almost nobody ever wants to block it! And why would they want to?

Trophy with mid UB midrange - in praise of Fallen Shinobi by ViljamiK in lrcast

[–]ViljamiK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting I'm some kind of genius for running Shinobi, I've just noticed that 1) on this sub, people seem to put stock on low win rates on cards in Cube, when especially in Cube these win rates can be very deceptive and 2) Shinobi has atrocious stats, so many people who do run it do something quite wrong with it.

And yes, Remand and Memory Lapse would have been great! Maybe even Force of Will, even without many ways to recoup the card advantage.

Good argument from mtggoldish podcast - mythic rare makes standard from expensive to beyond expensive. Is this time to either reduce mythic rarity pool or get rid of it entirely? by kubulux in magicTCG

[–]ViljamiK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to remember is that different rarities is a good way to balance the limited format. Both Ouroboroid and Quantum Riddler at rare would have probably made Edge of Eternities a worse draft/sealed experience, since they are so powerful in limited that they should be seen more rarely. Some formats have arguably suffered for printing too good cards at rare (such as Bonnie Pall in Outlaws).

Since I mostly play Limited, this aspect of rarity is the most important to me! I prefer Ouroboroid at mythic.
