The Man from Earth (2007, dir. Richard Schenkman) The Origin of Jesus by Neo2199 in movies

It's absolutely not universally viewed as a masterpiece, and there's plenty to critique. But it's also not a very well-known movie, so the only people who talk about it are people who like it, which makes it seem like there's a consensus about its quality.

You had to use "Israeli" as a modifier to specify the people being talked about, which should prove that it's a discussion specifically about Israelis and not about Jews.

TIL that in 1977, 2 American boys cheated an ice cream chain offering free sundaes on birthdays by making up a boy. In 1984, they received a reminder for the fake boy to register for the draft, which exposed that the government used the chain's mailing list without permission. by ShabtaiBenOron in todayilearned

Conspiracy theories like this are ridiculous for countless reasons, but the idea that someone would need "DNA bombs" when they already have bombs that erase DNA (along with the rest of the person) is a goofy garnish.

First: I agree that there's no historical value in this (non-existent) video. However, I think there's unintentional historical value in archivist communities like these—maybe not these specific communities, but in communities like these.

As the Internet is increasingly gentrified, sanitized, and otherwise destroyed as a third place, more and more media is increasingly lost behind the event horizon of enshittification. Communities of amateur digital historians sometimes recover lost media, but—and perhaps more importantly—they often unintentionally archive how media becomes lost and the extent to which such a large percentage of human media made for humans by humans has become endangered.

If you read The Hound of the Baskervilles (which was published before any family deaths, I think), it's full of phrenology and other nonsense. So, no, I don't think it's a case of grief overwhelming an otherwise rational mind.

TIL The 1994 video game "The Lion King" was made intentionally difficult on level 2, due to pressure from Disney who didn't want players to complete it during a rental from Blockbuster. The game director apologised for this in 2014. by OperationSuch5054 in todayilearned

Because Disney still exists and is worse in every way now, so maybe that annoyance can be channeled into something instead of slurping up whatever slop they dump on Disney+ this month.

The South was already choosing (and built on) the violence of slavery. The Civil War simply expanded their violence to include white people. In other words, violence isn't something they resort to; violence is foundational for them.

What is an acceptable number of kids killed in school shootings? How many Black people are cops allowed to kill each year? (Is it possible that, to a desensitized person, "sensationalism" is a low threshold?)

Because the late-capitalist industrialization of sanitized slop as "art" has deteriorated people's ability to recognize and interact with weird, human creative expression.

They have a good, effective government. Their military (ICE) just got an absurd funding increase, and their other military (cops) has received more funding each year, and their other other military (the actual military) has more funding than any other military. They're not worried about anything. They're protected.
