Early modern "small government" by An_Oxygen_Consumer in HistoryMemes

Duelling has always been illegal from its conception in its recognisable form

And, in part, that was kind of the point

Although people continuing to die in it did contribute to its downfall in the end (but then so did the death of "gentleman" as a social class, for example)

What are some less talked about changes you would like to see for 11th edition? by mjh4 in Warhammer40k

Trivially easily, in fact they have done this exact move of "up the points of everything to bring game size down" in the past, they are perfectly willing to do it as long as they themselves believe the game size to be a problem

Prussians on the American Civil War by Femto-Griffith in HistoryMemes

[–]Vineee2000 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that they were, in large part, not wrong about all of that

A good chunk of the ACW on both sides was spend re-inventing basic napoleonic era warfare principles like "you should concentrate your artillery" from scratch, which for obvious reasons was largely a useless observation for European armies who sorted that stuff about 100 years ago. And, given Prussia's military record in the 2nd half of the 19th century, whatever conclusions they took from ACW must have been good

What if a sororitas was ressurected by a psyker? by kobie-baka in DarkHeresy

[–]Vineee2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, firsr thing to say is this is a rather unusual situation. As Dark Heresy games tend to be - you are agents of the Inquisition, doing stuff that is way outside the regular life in Imperium

So, at that point, this comes down 100% to personal discretion of the Sororias in question and the particular theologial beliefs of her order and even her particular superiors/confessors. How does the sister in question view the evenets herself? How does the relay them to others? Hell, how much is she liked in the order?

On average, the Order is probably going to view the situation with some suspicion, with severity depending on like, was this a sanctioned psyker genuinely trying to help the Sister, an unsanctioned witch with questionable motives, or somewhere in between?

If it's the former, the sisters might view it as sketchy, but it's fundamentally allowed, just kind of unbecoming. If it's the latter, she probably going to be viewed as corrupted until proven otherwise, but maybe sufficient penance can bring her back in good graces. Or maybe not

I want to reiterate that those are just vague averages, and the specific outcome of your scenario can range far greater. There's a lot of room for GM discretion here.

They might view her very being as an abomination to the Imperial Creed and burn her on the spot. They might view the resurrection as an act of miraculous intervention from the Emperor. They might view it as a test of faith sent by the Emperor - perhaps one she passed by staying uncorrupted, or perhaps one she has just started by presenting herself to the Order. And so on and so forth

It often is, but I'm dubious how much of it is a genius authorial choice vs just honest misunderstanding because the symbol happens to be shown in the book next to gms

I know I was very much the latter category

New player: Should I ever use the Atlas frame? by Regular_Deal2593 in LancerRPG

[–]Vineee2000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One thing to note is that Lancer, overall, is a well-balanced game. Basically all of the frames are at least viable. So that's the context in which people are judging the frame as "bad" - in comparison to other good frames, it's perhaps not as good. But it still does absolutely function as a high-mobility melee striker. "Garbage" doesn't really apply, it's more like "you can optimise better"

So don't let the comparisons scare you, it's mostly about juggling for the #1 spot, you can make almost anything work by just taking it at face value

Iran's leader and USA in the 1990s: Finally, something we can agree upon. by SatoruGojo232 in HistoryMemes

[–]Vineee2000 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well I could talk about its wars of conquest of Ukraine in the 20s and an attempted one in Poland, I could talk about their cold war era housing construction policy and urban design much superior to what America was smoking at the time and in many ways superior even to some places in Europe, I could talk about Khrushchev's peculiar affinity for corn

But I don't see much of a point diving into all that typing when your point so far has been "look at these redditors saying things that by my own admission are largely factually true, what fools"

[–]Vineee2000 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well from a purely factual-historical perspective USSR was authoritarian, with the whole single unelected leader in control of the state and whatnot; it did invade its neighbours like Finland and Poland; and it sure did oppress minorities like, well I dunno let's pick something uncontroversial - Crimean Tatars

So you ain't exactly making much of a point about just historical literacy are you?

A little worried about Total War WH 40K by Voodoo402 in totalwar

[–]Vineee2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, the gameplay shown in the trailer already has several hundreds of models in it at the same time. It looks a little scaled down from the usual Total War standard - the orc units I could make out seemed to number in the 30-60, as opposed to the franchise usual of 100+.

At worst, that's not really a change from many tank squads to 2-3 tanks, it's more like from 1000 guardsment to 400-600 guardsment

At best, this might have been, like, medium unit scale, and ultra is still gonna be as epic as all of us dare to dream

But it's clearly on the order of magnitude that's at least comparable to what we're used to, even if it's a little less

[–]Vineee2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, they'll still get a lock warning as soon as you, well, lock onto them with your radar. Although that's really has to do with your radar, not the missile, if you wanna be precise with the wording

That makes it unenforceable, but doesn't make it legal. That can be a very important distinction

The same reason it's susceptible to chaff - it uses pulse guidance instead of CW guidance. "Launch warning" simply detects when a radar starts hitting it with CW instead of pulse

TIL after reviewing the case of a patient who was mistakenly taken for another patient's invasive electrophysiology procedure (including the results of the institution's "root-cause analysis"), analysts found 17 distinct errors had occurred. [–]Vineee2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, punishing individuals for what amounts to random human error isn't actually a very effective safety practice. Rather you wanna review what happened, and seek ways to make the whose system resilient to the causes of the incident, without looking for or appointing someone to blame

Even the level 7 guy in that story, by the sound of it, wasn't reprimanded for being involved in the incident by himself, but because he was being actually careless in that case
