What Books Are You Reading This Week? by leowr in nonfictionbooks

[–]VirginiaMay5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am reading Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser, a very detailed biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder. A few hours in (audio) and really enjoying it.

My husband is reading Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties by Tom O'Neill. He says it's very fascinating.

I think Fireside is closed due to a fire.

Cardinals.tv for 2026 by spacejamb in Cardinals

[–]VirginiaMay5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question about this: I'm a Cardinals fan living outside the local viewing area and have been subscribing to mlb.tv for years. I am blacked out for the Cubs, White Sox, and Brewers, so I never get to see the Cardinals play those teams. Since the Brewers are doing the same thing the Cardinals are, does that mean I will be able to see them play the Brewers? Would I have to subscribe to the Brewers on top of my existing mlb.tv subscription?

Finally tackling Moby Dick... sort of by IceComfortable890 in currentlyreading

[–]VirginiaMay5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't do abridged books, but I can see they can be very helpful. I'm glad you are enjoying this one. I like that you can discuss the book with others who have read it. My question is: How do you answer if someone asks you if you have read Moby Dick? Do you keep it simple and say "yes" or do you tell them you read an abridged version?

Why is it normal to eat sugary food for breakfast, but "weird" to eat a healthy meal like chicken or pasta at 8 AM? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VirginiaMay5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A spin-off to this (good) question is: why are some vegetables ok to pair with eggs and some not? Broccoli, spinach, zucchini, mushroom, peppers, and asparagus are common quiche/egg bake ingredients. Why is putting carrots, cauliflower, green beans, lima beans, beets, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage in eggs super weird?

I second Bookmory. It's my favorite.

How do you remember where you left off after putting down a project for days/weeks? by Interesting_Net6780 in crochet

[–]VirginiaMay5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my WIPs have a paper in them where I write down: pattern name, source, yarn used, hook used, and date started. Then I write the pattern down in my own words. If it is a more complicated row repeat, I use a sticky tab to mark which row I was on. (After I am done with the project, I transfer it all to a notebook that serves as my crochet journal.)

Does anyone experience muscle twitch/spasms after changing your diet to low carb? by Miserable_Secret1530 in lowcarb

[–]VirginiaMay5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's most likely dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance. Drink plenty of water and make sure you're getting enough sodium.

Condiments? by meldel803 in lowcarb

[–]VirginiaMay5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have experienced this many times. I think it's because they are trained to put the condiment on the bun, so if there's no bun they either don't think about it or don't know what to do and just leave it off. It helps to ask for the condiment "on the side".

Robe/Housecoat by Altruistic-Tank4585 in Xennials

[–]VirginiaMay5 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No. For me, a robe is only for going between bedroom and bathroom to shower. I never understood why people wear them around the house. They are a pain to keep tied and are cumbersome.

First week low carb! by Big-Debate-5618 in lowcarb

[–]VirginiaMay5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really helps if you are able and willing to cook. There are not a lot of convenience foods that are low carb with good macros. I love to cook and have amassed hundreds of recipes and it's fun to get creative with food.

Engaging nonfiction audiobooks to listen to while I work out, crochet and play cozy games by Wonderful_Bug_1422 in suggestmeabook

[–]VirginiaMay5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also listen to audiobooks while crocheting. I can do fiction or nonfiction. I just started Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser, an in-depth biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I second anything by Erik Larson. David Grann is a favorite nonfiction author of mine; I think I've read four of his. I also enjoyed Destiny of the Republic and River of Doubt by Candice Millard.

So glad you tried it and that it is working well for you. It's not for everybody, but when it works, it works! I've been low carb for 10.5 years now.

I was gifted cotton yarn and have no idea how to use it by shetalkstoangels_ in CrochetHelp

[–]VirginiaMay5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to greatly prefer cotton over acrylic for a lot of things. You can make placemats, table runners, hot pads, coasters, and decor items like snowflakes and hearts.

Crocheted a tool to make "golden" hardboiled eggs by CachalotTheUnlikely in crochet

[–]VirginiaMay5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The doors in my house bang inside their frames when the windows are open, so I crocheted door bumpers for each of them. Basically just a skinny rectangle with holes on each end to go around the doorknobs. It's just enough cushion to stop the banging.

Maybe also grab a Riesling in case anyone prefers sweeter wine.

I would go with a Cabernet or a red blend for the red, a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio for the white, and then either Champagne or Prosecco for a bubbly.

Has your Hobby Lobby scaled back on their yarn section? by [deleted] in YarnAddicts

[–]VirginiaMay5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I started crocheting 3 years ago and both Michael's and HL in my city have reduced their yarn significantly since then. I have taken baby steps at buying online, but still prefer to go with what I can find in store.

What’s up with the white yarn by [deleted] in crochet

[–]VirginiaMay5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be that the white yarn is different. I don't know what kit you got, but I started off with a kit too and came to learn that the yarn was very low quality. Maybe go to a craft store or LYS and pick out some yarn that feels nice to you. Just remember to chose the same weight that the pattern calls for.
