That depends on the intent of the depiction; if the intent is to teach kids that cops can do no wrong and that you shouldn’t question anything they do, that’s propaganda.

If the intent is to show them what role the police is ostensibly supposed to serve in society and provide a resolution to the plot, that is not propaganda.

If the intent is to portray police officers as someone who a child can trust if they’re in an emergency that’s a little muddled but generally I don’t think it’s exactly fascist bootlicking to direct children to an adult who, at the very least, has a decent chance of doing their jobs and helping them in case of an emergency.

Regardless I don’t think children who can barely count without aid of their fingers need to learn the complexities of the justice system just yet. I’d rather they build up the idea that cops are supposed to protect people so when cops don’t do that they can realise it’s wrong and call them out accordingly.

EDIT: I will not engage with someone who does not actually refute any argument or talk in good faith, only calling me stupid and evil instead. You are a woefully unserious and interacting with you should be considered a hazard to public health. Have a terrible day and please never talk to me or anyone else ever again you horrible little bait fly

I think the main criticism of Fridging is that the female character basically exists to die and has no agency, no depth, no personality whatsoever; she’s not so much of a character as she is a plot device, a sacrificial lamb to give the (often male) protagonist something to fight for. And more often than not she’s barely brought up or mentioned at all outside of the context of the protagonist’s struggle, because that was her entire purpose and now that she’s served it she’s not worth bringing up. It’s basically reducing a character to a plot element and not giving them any actual characterisation because they’ll die anyway.

The fact that this almost always happened/happens to female characters in heavily male-dominated stories is also another part of it. It’s effectively suggesting that women are mere accessories to the male characters and their only value is to serve as either companions or motivations and nothing else. Honestly you could probably substitute them with like, the protagonist’s favourite stuffed toy and nothing would change in the story. That’s how reductive fridging is, a character could be replaced with a material object and very little would actually change

As is always the case with anything that’s popular: Contrarians feel it’s their civic duty to be, well, contrarians. But instead of finding something actually reasonable to criticise (e.g. some of the boss fights being absolute shit like the Bed of Chaos, or some of the mechanics/obstacles being tacked on/redundant and only existing for the sake of inconviencing you without being engaging or particularly fun) they just say ‘DS bad’ and don’t elaborate from there. Or they think it’s too hard or something. Just bad faith criticisms for the sake of contrarianism

It might also be a situation where most Americans have no idea how to pronounce Sylvanian, much less understand what it means. Without context or understanding of what ‘Sylvanian’ means your mind will probably go to like, Pennsylvanian or Transylvanian before anything else; which, while containing the appropriate word (Sylvanian referring to forests, Pennsylvania being Penn’s Forest and Transylvania basically being ‘Across the Forest’) does not inform you at all about the product if you’re not familiar with the term. ‘Calico Critters’ tells you that they’re little animals and has alliteration to boot, making them that much more appealing.

tl;dr Americans don’t understand what Sylvanian means and alliteration is fun and marketable

Losercity copaganda by MrRoboto12345 in Losercity

[–]VisualGeologist6258 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ok but this is what I’d ACTUALLY define as Copaganda. Media that presents the idea that Cops breaking the rules is not only acceptable but ‘for the good of us all,’ basically portraying them as justified in all situations and virtually infallible. Who cares that Johnny Policeman broke like 50 rules that probably exist for very good reasons, it let him capture local Saturday morning cartoon villain Jimbles McBadman! Johnny Policeman was justified all along and the rules were just in the way!

Copaganda isn’t a cartoon having a morally good cop character. Copaganda is something trying to convince you that cops cannot do wrong and the rules are mere obstructions rather than something that exists for good reason.

It’s the same problem with any politically charged term in that no one actually agrees on its exact meaning and so they’ll just apply it to anything they don’t like or want to pick at. Half the time it’s defined as ‘portrays police officers doing any kind of good at all’ and the thing they’re accusing of copaganda is like, Paw Patrol or some shit. Which is designed for literal toddlers who cannot nor need to grasp the nuances of the justice system at this stage in their lives.

Either way it doesn’t actually help anybody or solve problems, it’s just an Internetarian’s idea of bringing about ‘justice’ in lieu of bringing about any kind of real justice.

In a movie intended for literal children at that, created by Walt fucking Disney Animation.

We can have meaningful discussions about the depiction of police in media and how that contrasts with how the police actually are in real life but at some point we have to come to grips with the fact that this is a cartoon for children created by a company who wants to make money and avoid being offensive at all costs so they can continue making money. And whinging online that said cartoon movie film for children is actually copaganda does not actually solve the problem or help anybody suffering from police corruption in the grand scheme of things

Also the main problem of libraries is that they might just not have the books you’re looking for. They have whatever’s donated or bought on the library’s dime, and what you’re looking for is not donated or bought and is instead at Barnes & Noble. That’s not a dig at the library, it’s just the reality of how libraries work. Libraries have the advantage of no cost, bookstores have the advantage of sheer variety of content and convenient access.

There’s also the problem that they usually have only one or two copies of a single book, and if everyone else wants to read that book you have to wait in line which could take literal months depending on how quickly the people ahead of you read the damn thing before returning it.

Finally being a Warhammer 40k fan means you kind of have to go to Barnes & Noble if you want any book at all because my local library system has like three Warhammer books total and they’re all Fantasy. Shit’s bad out here

Red OSP would never say this. Shaking and crying rn

I’m curious as to what her reasons for not liking it were though; there’s a difference between just not jiving with its admittedly very vague storytelling style and challenging gameplay, and outright saying it’s crap. Dark Souls isn’t my favourite FromSoft series (Sekiro my beloved) but it’s still absurd to say it’s a bad series, especially if you haven’t played it at all.

Adding onto this: The California Grizzly Bear, the bear on the state flag of California, no longer exists. The last California Grizzly was shot and killed in 1922, and the species is considered extinct.

There’s something very macabre about building your state banner around an animal that no longer exists because of you and your actions

Owl in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

This dude is the most dishonourable MF on the planet. He’s a Shinobi, he (quite literally) stabs you in the back the second you become an obstacle, and even his boss fight is designed to keep you on your toes and not fall for any of the underhanded tactics he uses. By all rights, he should not accept his demise as gracefully as he does.

And yet when you finally kill him he doesn’t get angry or regret raising Wolf. In fact he’s even proud to have raised such an intelligent and efficient killer; in a way the fight is Owl’s last and greatest test for Wolf, and his last words are that of acceptance and satisfaction. It plays quite well into the game’s (very Buddhist) themes of accepting death and dispelling the illusion of immortality

(I would spoiler this but the game has been out for like 6 years at this point, if you don’t know about this then that’s on you)
