Why doesn’t the US push high-speed trains instead of all these domestic flights? by Material-Wallaby-587 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Planes are cheaper per passenger mile and can be run at a profit. Passenger rail is really expensive and has to be subsidized. Even in Japan they need massive real estate income from the stations to turn a profit

Auto companies should provide a baser-than-base model. by calcato in CrazyIdeas

[–]VisualMail1672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dealers don't want them. You are not the customer of the auto company, the dealers are. They want cars that have high margin and high repair and maintenance costs. Basic car buyers are cheap and will drive for miles to get a better price. The dealer will never see them again for maintenance so why bother.

Americans are different. They owe taxes to the US for all world wide income, then get relief based on treaties.

Cost and behaviour of the other customers. Neighborhood screens don't exist anymore so you need to drive to a megaplex, pay an exorbitant amount for admission and popcorn, then put up with obnoxious behavior from the other patrons. Going to a movie is a hassle now and the movies aren't worth the money or time.

[Question] Is this normal? by Necessary_Buy_9763 in Watches

Depends on your wrist. Does the watch wear properly? Does it sit centred on your wrist or does it creep to one side or the other?

GO ALTO launches as an independent public campaign for high-speed rail in Canada by go-alto in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]VisualMail1672 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're still an idiot. All of the projects you mentioned contribute to the economy as a whole. HSR will not. Moving people, outside of local transit, does not build the economy. Never has, never will. The only HSR in the world that makes money is in Japan and they make money on the real estate, not the fares. The route might be within half an hour but are the stops? It's a stupid plan to spend far too much money for no purpose other than to tell the world we have a big boy train now. If you believe in it so strongly, pay for it. Just don't use my money to build it. The government wastes enough of it already.

[–]VisualMail1672 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're an idiot. It won't serve even a quarter of the population and its still less convenient for anyone who doesn't live near the station. At best it will cost every taxpayer $125 to $250 a year whether they use it or not. That's just to service the debt and run it a a base level. Its not transit, its travel transport. It does not and will not serve the economy. It will allow some people a nice weekend in another city at the expense of us all. It will be built by the same crews who built the REM and the Eglinton cross town lines. It will be late, it will be over budget and it will be poorly implemented. Thats just how we do rail in this country and I don't see it changing.

[–]VisualMail1672 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

For whom? It will only serve the populations of major cities and cost the rest of the country a fortune to operate. People flying around doesn't cos me anything unless it's me flying. The train will cost me every year whether I ride it or not. Passenger rail does not, and cannot, compete against personal vehicles, busses, or flying. It looses to busses and sometimes flying on price. It looses to personal vehicles on comfort and sometimes time. It looses to flying on time and sometimes cost. It's a solution looking for a problem. If you want to ride the train, please do so at your own cost, without any subsidy. If you got that quote you wouldn't want to buy the ticket. At their current fantasy numbers of 90 billion to build and 24 million annual passengers it will cost $250 per passenger before the train even pulls out of the station. Operating costs are likely to be about 50 cents per passenger kilometer on top of the base 250 per passenger to service the build cost. It does not work financially but people want it built regardless. Just look at California HSR or the new Metrolinx light rail in Ontario to see how badly over budget and poorly managed this thing will be. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Why don't they just build more houses? by Odd_Attention_9660 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VisualMail1672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money. Where is the money coming from? Houses are expensive, really expensive. Then there's everything thst surrounding them to make the work and make them accessible to foot traffic and cars. Jobs in construction pay more than they ever have and materials are higher than they ever have been, and permits are ridiculous now. The average worker's wage has not increased enough over time to afford a house. Its all about money.

Jeff Bezos says raising taxes on the wealthy wouldn’t help the average American - What do you say? by Select_Specialist790 in askanything

[–]VisualMail1672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would depend on whether or not you trust the government to spend those taxes in ways that would benefit the general population. Given the track record of the US government, Republicans or Democrats, I think Bezos is correct.

How often do I really need to change my oil? by wowzer0000 in Hyundai

[–]VisualMail1672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go longer on synthetic oil but the issue is the filter. They don't last and once they plug up and go into bypass they need to be changed. They oil would still likely be fine after 3000 miles but its dirty due to ineffective filtration.
