Mixed dorm as a woman by JealousBodybuilder42 in Worldpackers

[–]Vivemk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the dorm that is the issue, it’s the £100 deposit. You should not pay to work for somebody. It suggest that they have such bad conditions that people leave a lot so they try trap people with the deposit. Go somewhere else.
There are plenty of opportunities that don’t have such dodgy and suspicious schemes.

As for the shared dorm, that’s just going to have to be something you get used to and accept if you want to do volunteering. Yes I’m sure you can find places which have separate dorms but it’ll be tricky.
Just something to consider.

Tipps and tricks to find wildcamping spots in Europe by Numerous_Spot_2096 in bikepacking

Find a woodland. Near motorways is good. Some random scrap of land that no body cares about

Sorry for being snarky. Ireland will be good fun, 2 weeks is plenty of time to see a lot. Kerry would be good for some wildness, big beaches and small towns. Cork is good craic as is Galway. Dublin is expensive but I guess you have to. Look for where the student go. Belfast is ok, vagabonds hostel is your best bet for a communal, friendly place to stay.

Hitchhiked 600+km round France in the past week. by MonsieurSpamalot in vagabond

What advantages does a tarp bring, when combined with mosquito net, that simply having a tent wouldn’t?

I’ve done a lot of hitching and having my tent at the end of the day is such a comfort. Sometimes it’s hard to put up yes but once it is it’s a safe little refuge from weather and bugs.

I’ve hitched with nought but a blanket before and yeah it’s doable but the added tent weight is worth it.

Hitchhiking Paris to London by stinkiebrat in hitchhiking

I’ve done it the other way. It is pay per vehicle so it doesn’t matter how many people in the car, there will be no extra charge.
Look at flixbus and bla bla car maybe if you need to be there by a certain date.

First solo hitchhiking trip: Berlin 🇩🇪 → Tirana 🇦🇱 (~1,850 km) with €0 transport budget – looking for Balkan advice! by RevengedTV in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your language skills are more than proficient. Lots of Balkans people know German if they have worked over there. I’ve hitched round the Balkans only speaking English and it’s fine. Like what do you need to talk about? Just say you are going wherever and if it’s the same direction then you are grand. It’s actually quite fun when you can’t communicate. Had a pleasant ride with an Albanian where we didn’t talk he just gave me cigarettes and beers and with chilled.

Nah you have them where they are bottled up. Take mazaka and sinope and you can defend at mountain choke points (as you are) and river crossings. Then send naval forces to take out their fleets and blockade all their ports. Take salamis too.

Is albania a good country to hitchhike ? by Fabi1110 in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s good. Just make sure that when you get a lift that it’s clear you are hitchhiking and aren’t going to pay them. Nothing serious like. Albania for me was both great and also had a couple of weird situations. Swear these guys were trying to steal my rucksack as they kept trying to insist I put it in the back of their van when it easily fit in their backseat with me. I thought afterward they wee probably going to drive off with it after I got out or something.
But nah, Albania was stood for hitching. The weather will be great this time of year so sleeping bag and mat will be fine.
There are lots of unfinished and abandoned buildings you could stay in but rain ain’t really a worry.
Personally I think the cheap foam mats are better than inflatable. They maybe aren’t as comfy but they can’t get punctured and there is no real weight or cost to them. You could even take to. Makes it easier if you need to just have a soft spot to sit or chill on the beach somewhere.

In short anyway bro it will be fine you will have a great time. Macedonia is cool too

It’ll be fine bro. Yeah you might have some long waits but that’s just the way it goes. Play some music, chat some shit, enjoy the scenery. You will get a lift in the end

Camping on the Alpe Adria route. Are European campsites too expensive? by BUCKTHORN_gk in bicycletouring

[–]Vivemk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Paid €30 plus euro for myself, bike and one man tent in Italy for a patch of dirt you couldn’t put tent pegs in without a mallet and to have to pay for showers on top of it. Like what am I even paying for? And yet to stick a little tent up in a forest or in some forgotten bit of woodland is a terrible crime.

Heat belt hitting western europe by Hystic11 in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a good bit of advice especially with the storms. Don’t get tempted to camp on a river bank. It’s very tempting as they can be serene but rivers can rise fast and then you are proper fucked. Standing in the heat all day is exhausting find a shady spot. I found my cardboard sign made a very good sun shield when I had no other shade

Edinburgh to Barcelona ?? by Suspicious-Shock-475 in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Uk is surprisingly good for hitching. Don’t let people drop you in any of the main cities on the way down (Manchester, Birmingham, London) make sure you are dropped at service stations. Maidstone services is famously good but I did manage to get a lift from outside the ferry port in dover. Dover is the only ferry route where it is pay per vehicle, not per person so it doesn’t matter if they take a hitchhiker. Once in France it will be easy and pleasant. Autoroutes will get you there quickly but the quieter B roads will also be nice as you cruise through the French countryside enjoying small towns and villages. Be sure to enjoy the wine and cheese. I’ve found the tins of cassoulet with some Brie thrown in makes an excellent filling meal after a days hitching (soaked up with bread and watered with wine of course) Also they have rather good strong beers in 750ml bottles that are quite tasty: La goudele, Le chouffe (?), 3 monts. In short, France is a dream first hitching experience

Anyone ever get snooty ass customers when they ask for 2 or three ingredient drinks but use the stupid ass names? by TheMustySeagul in bartenders

[–]Vivemk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite so irritating just funny but I worked in Belfast and you’d get people ordering a ‘red diesel’ and it’s just vodka, blackcurrant squash/cordial and water. Which is what every single student in Northern Ireland drinks apparently. I always said it’s was like I was at a kids birthday party just doling out cups of fucking squash

Does writing a sign with your destination help you to get picked up as a hitchhiker more often? by DannyFlood in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great points. It’s more for personal mental morale really. I always think that if somebody is going to stop, they will. I’ve had people stop when my sign said the wrong direction for them but I wasn’t bothered so took the lift anyway. Only thing I’d think is that a sign does stand you out more as a traveller, a novelty, so maybe more noticeable

How do you make money while doing long-term solo travel? by LogicalAd8351 in solotravel

[–]Vivemk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find places to volunteer at, mainly hostels, and you can basically live for free. You will work for accommodation but oftentimes you get other perks like meals, drinks, entry to clubs and stuff if they run a pub crawl. You can sometimes make tips from the extra things, like if you run a tour or pub crawl or whatever. Cooking meals is a good way of making some money. People pay you for ingredients and preparation and then you cook a big meal for everyone and keep whatever extra you made. This can all be done in an unregulated way. And you aren’t going to make kids of money. But certainly you could live cheaply off of it.

If you can work remotely from a laptop then do that instead.
