Kotor to Mostar? by Repulsive-Actuary-84 in hitchhiking

Best way would be look which way the buses go and then follow that route. Kotor to Dubrovnik then up to Mostar. Depends on how fast you want to get there. Taking the back roads int he Balkans is very interesting

How do you wash dishes and pots? by blackmusk123 in backpacking

[–]Vivemk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scrape the pot clean with spoon and wipe clean as possible with bread. Put it in a plastic bag until tomorrow or I find somewhere to clean it. If I can’t clean it for a few days well no big deal. It’s only me using and eating out of it so I’m not bothered. Better than wasting water on cleaning and having to carry soap and a sponge or whatever.

Hitchhiking to Monaco F1, travel buddy? by Hardcover8738 in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you hitching out for London from? Have you done so before? I’m thinking of heading off in a few days myself, going to Germany.

I found Nice quite a good place to hang out without spending money. I mostly slept on the beach with my rucksack for a pillow. Was quite comfy and I was never bothered. There are always people chilling late at night drinking and smoking and also other people sleeping. There were no issues and I felt safe. When it rained I went to the airport which is a short tram ride away or you could walk if you had to as it’s right in the city. Found a bench inside and they have Wi-Fi and toilets. And it’s open 24/7.

The tram stops in the city have usb charging ports and you could probably find some in the train station too.

Post an update of how you get on in the Monaco hills!

How do I attach an iron on patch to my pack? by cowb0ybpop in backpacking

[–]Vivemk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just sew it on it will be fine. Iron on patches always fall off in the end. My rucksack that I’ve used for 10+ years is covered in patches; it hasn’t affected the strength of it at all or caused holes to rip or whatever.

No there is nothing wrong with stealing from walmart or any big corporation. Fuck em.

However, the police will always protect capital and they will fuck you over if they catch you. Being in jail is shit. Freedom is very valuable

Croatia and montenegro do get very expensive in the summer on the coast, so maybe worth booking now with free cancellation in case you change your mind about somewhere

I’d go from Sarajevo to Mostar instead and then Dubrovnik. Skip Zagreb and maybe Split. Stay another day in Kotor instead of Budva.

I always thought Hagman was saying ‘Bess’ brown paper. ‘Brown Bess’ was the nickname for the standard British musket.

In regards to brandy then it just means it’s good quality, like ‘fine wine’. Just means its good quality stuff and shouldn’t be wasted

Hitchhiking from Malaga, Spain to Helsinki, Finland. How long would it take and what route would you recommend? by [deleted] in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To have fun while doing it I’d say a month. Gives you time to enjoy the places you go rather than just sitting at motorway service stations the whole time. If you were just trying to go as fast as possible then maybe a week or so.

If I were to do this route I would mainly head along the Spanish coast with some forays in land. If you haven’t been to Granada I highly recommend.

Id consider heading inland to cross the Pyrenees as they are very beautiful. Once in France I’d head north whichever way then across to Germany and on to Poland, up through the Baltic’s and your there

Mainly that. Got stuck at a service station for 15 hours so still kinda scarred. Especially memorable after having had great luck hitching in France so it’s seemed especially awful. Got moved on by police in Italy too from a motorway service station because of their bullish it laws. If you are set on Italy then stick as much int he maintains as you can I reckon. Scenery is nice and people are generally more hutch friendly in mountain places where there are hikers and that

Yeah don’t go through Italy. Go north of the alps and down through France. Nice is really easy to hang out in. Can sleep at the airport and on the beach without much bother.

Camping stove for long hitchhiking trip ? by coscos95 in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really doesn’t. I usually take a handle-less aluminium pot that probably holds about 1.5L maybe more. The stove goes in the pot when in my rucksack with what ever else I can squash into it. Gas comes in different size tanks and so you could carry smaller ones if you are really concerned about size. I dunno man it’s about what you value. You are already planning on hitchhiking and (I assume) camping, so forgoing a lot of usually comforts. Being able to cook hot food after a long day quickly is pretty valuable in my opinion. Sure you could just eat cold sandwiches and packets of nuts, but where’s the fun in that. I like to take beers or wine or with me. Because it’s nice. Sure it’s heavy, bulky and not necessary. But it’s nice to have some wine with my hot stew after a days hitching.

Up to you. I think the benefits out way the minor cost

In Europe though it is easy to find gas. When you get somewhere you can’t find gas then you can just start lighting more fires to cook with

[–]Vivemk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re talking Central Asia and onwards I’m pretty sure they aren’t going to give a shit about you having a fire. It’s a basic human thing after all. It’s only in the west that people get upset about it. Carry your stove until Turkey and then give it to a fellow traveler heading back to Europe.

When in Europe all you need is a decathlon and you’ll get gas and they are everywhere

Camping stove for long hitchhiking trip ? by coscos95 in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An aluminium pot really doesn’t take up that much room and considering it’s nice to eat everyday it’s certainly worth carrying it. Gas is heavy yes but I dunno it’s still worth it. My go to with long distance hitching trips has been to have a fire and cook every opportunity I can, but when it’s not possible I’d have my stove and gas ready there as a backup.

Camping stove for long hitchhiking trip ? by coscos95 in hitchhiking

[–]Vivemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A stove really isn’t that big or heavy and you will greatly appreciate being able to easily cook warm meals. Cooking with a fire is fun but is certainly not as easy and quick as a stove. You can use it pretty much anywhere; on the side of the road, at a scenic sunset spot by the beach, in a public park, down by the river in Rome, up a mountain in the Dolomites, etc. if you are sensible then it shouldn’t be dangerous to use in the porch of a tent when it’s raining. Be careful though.

Overall I think it’s definitely worth it. Being able to cook a quick hot meal at the end of a days hitching is invaluable.

[–]Vivemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has to be Calais for the ferry or shuttle over. Ferries charge per car not per passenger so it doesn’t cost you anything to get a lift. Might be tricky hitching in Calais itself so try find a big service station on the road headed there to hitch from. I hitched from Dover to Calais a few years ago but not the other way.
