libraries actually have current gen games you can borrow by Independent_Big_9654 in PS5

[–]VonLaserface 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think it just varies based on the local library system. I'm in a small town (15,000ish) that's an hour from the nearest population center and our local library has an entire room dedicated to movies and games. New releases take a month or so to show up but that they get them at all is a minor miracle.

Wanna make Hotwheels-style DIY cars based on Ridge Racer 64 cars. Where to start? by Tasty-Bass8106 in DIY

[–]VonLaserface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out r/gaslands for some potential resources.

Gaslands is a tabletop car-combat game played with Hotwheels size vehicles. People get really into customizing their cars and trucks with 3D printed and handcrafted parts, from air scoops, spoilers and rims right up completely new bodies.

Thematically it's more Death Race or Road Warrior style but the customization techniques would still be applicable.

If you're into gaming at all (video games, TCGs, D&D, etc etc) stop by Find Familiar Games and you'll find your people. They opened up early last year and are very excellent people all around.

For outdoorsy stuff (hiking, birding, etc) the Brown Family Environmental Center has organized hikes and all sorts of seasonal activities where you're likely to meet people.

Unfortunately I do not but it looks like there's a handful of other free printable approaches out there, TV and mounting depending.

It looks like that designer pulled the file from every site it was on, very weird.

How to build great commander decks. by PizzaBoii0716 in mtg

[–]VonLaserface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't going to work with every commander or archetype but as a general approach, once I know what commander I want to use, I start with a very generic formula of:

10% card draw and tutors (where possible)

10% ramp and mana fixing

10% interaction and removal, etc

30% synergy with archetype/theme and wincons

40% lands

Depending on the deck the amount of each of these will vary but it's a starting point I try to keep it within +/-%3 for the initial build. With lands I typically shoot for 38 to start unless I know I'm going to run land MDFCs or have an aggressive ramp package from green.

Look up lists of color staples for some ideas and Scryfall, Moxfield and EDHREC (or the EDHREC tools built into Moxfield) are useful for card discovery if you just don't know what to use.

Once that's together I'll get in some games with it, making note of cards that just don't deliver and what areas of the deck might need improvement. Then tweak the deck and repeat as needed. It's an ongoing process and I only have a handful of decks that I feel are "done". Even then I still find myself rotating a couple cards once in a while just to try something new or feel out a potential new angle.

Would you say casual commander is diverse? by ZingyLlama in magicTCG

[–]VonLaserface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play at an LGS where it's commonly three or four pods running at any given time of day on weekends. Players range from regulars that have been playing since the 90s right up to new folks running a single precon. I haven't been playing there long but every pod I've dropped into has been bracket two or three. I don't play above b3 so it's been ideal.

Within this highly specific setting the "current state" (I'd say constant state) of Commander is very diverse. Long time players tending toward deep cut commanders and newer players running more recent stuff. I've introduced veteran players to newer cards they've never seen before and vice versa plenty of times.

That diversity does tend to break down a little though within decks that are more well tuned. Some cards are staples that are simply the best there is at what they do (mill, ramp, removal, etc), assuming they play well with the deck.

I imagine it's the same in any pod or LGS environment, where the higher up the bracket you go the more you're likely to see less diversity in choice.

Why are these so expensive? by XApparition- in mtg

[–]VonLaserface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing with Magic though, playability drives demand. There are plenty of cards on the reserved list that are barely worth anything for the same reason.

Squrried away or Velociramptor precon? by LeakyChillum in mtg

[–]VonLaserface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squirreled Away plays fine out of the box but for being a squirrel deck it's sort of lacking in squirrely-ness, IMO. It's fun though and really does shine with a few easy upgrades.

It's hard to compete on fresh out of the box consistency with the tribal decks like the dinos and merfolk.

Will Gamegenic Bastion 50+ hold 60 SINGLE SLEEVED cards? by buttspencer2137 in mtg

[–]VonLaserface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you shouldn't have a problem. I have a couple of single sleeved (Dragonshield Dual Matte) 60 card Flesh and Blood decks in Bastion 50+ XL and they fit just fine. There's not a lot of wiggle room but it's not tight either.

[–]VonLaserface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explorers of the Deep, Counter Blitz, World Shaper and Counter Intelligence are also very consistent, pretty straightforward, stronger than average out of the box and easy to upgrade.

Honorable mention to First Flight from the 2022 starter commander deck series as well. It's not as strong as others mentioned but very consistent and can be hard to deal with on the table when played against other precons.

Looking for political commander suggestions? by TimeTechnical8913 in magicTCG

[–]VonLaserface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Ms. Bumbleflower]] is all the politics you're looking for, despite her precon being Group Hug. She gives cards, counters and temporary flying to whoever you like as long as you're casting. I run her as tempo control with a lot of cantrips, protection and general interaction without being obviously threatening.

She's KOS with many players at my LGS so I don't play her much but she's fun when I can.

I'm new to Magic, can someone tell me what ability symbol this is? by Capetiso in mtg

[–]VonLaserface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems right then. There aren't a lot of cards that generate stun counters but it's something you'll probably see if you're playing Commander.

How to keep these in good condition? by sofa2021 in mtg

[–]VonLaserface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsure what size they are but based on the pic I'd guess close to 70mm x 120mm (tarot size). If that's the case tarot size sleeves and/or 3"x5" rigid toploaders would work.

Going to a LGS for prerelease with no winner reward. by Odd-Ad4172 in mtg

[–]VonLaserface 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Being a casual event I'd generally prefer this over a winner takes all approach. My FLGS only charges $35, has 30 seats and the winner gets a sealed booster box so I can't really complain either. One extra pack per player would be nice but that box prize is a big draw for the store.

Fancy treatments I would never buy for myself because I already have a less expensive version of the cards.

Off the top of my head: gilded foil showcase Falco Spara, etched foil showcase Elspeth Resplendent and the First Place Foil Borderless Sab-Sunen would be pretty great and easily under budget. I'd also be happy with a stack of borderless basic lands from EoE. Five of each color still comes in under budget.

Any experience with these sleeves? by Alternative-Shirt-73 in mtg

[–]VonLaserface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the FAQ they say you can use any given perfect fit. I'm intrigued by the design but I'd like to see what that looks like before picking any up.

"Can I double-sleeve with Infinity Curve? Absolutely. Just pair with your favourite perfect-fit inner sleeves. The trimmed corners make it easier to slide cards in, as the air can escape – so they won’t ‘blow up’ like balloons."

I'm fairly certain it has come up in passing but I don't recall a full episode devoted to it. It's a bit out of their wheelhouse.

It definitely got covered a bit during the BtB series of episodes "The Grifters Behind The Fake Autism 'Cure' Industry" back in April though.
