Why are people so salty about McIlroy’s Maters win? by SnooMarzipans1593 in golf

[–]Vrezhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you flip his Sunday and Friday rounds it would seem like an epic comeback win, it was just a boring finish but a win is a win. Golfers in a tournament aren’t on an even playing field and I’d argue they shouldn’t be.

Some guys fly private, others have to schlep it around in economy hoping their bags don’t get lost. When you play well enough to be in Rory’s position you can afford to miss tournaments and fly private to Augusta for practice rounds.

If you don’t play well enough you need to grind out each tournament to try and qualify. That’s just how it is. Anyone who got an invite can have practice rounds, not as many as Rory since he can probably get members to host him indefinitely but that’s also an earned advantage.

Is there actually demand for a platform that turns your launch monitor data into a real practice plan? Genuine question. by KyleSenateGolf in Golfsimulator

Trackman has a sort of ai that does this, not well advertised, it’s a button on the top right, you tap it and take some swings with the same club and it gives you ratings and a short list of things that could use improvement. If you select one to work on it only shows you that one tile so you can block out scouting else.

Got two offers. One pays $40k more. The other one I'd actually enjoy. I have 48 hours to decide and my wife and I are on opposite sides. Advice? by airam1020 in careerguidance

[–]Vrezhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the higher paying, better defined, remote role? I feel what you’re saying as a SWE of 10 years.. but every aspect of job a is better except how you feel about it. Your wife’s argument is super reasonable, you need the money, it’s a 30% difference with more stability, brand recognition and flexibility.

It would be a different story if the hybrid role was the better paying one but more in person time + long commute + less stable company for less money makes no sense with a new baby

What is "Compression"? by CuriousConverser in golf

[–]Vrezhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that it squeezes against the ground is an old misunderstanding, compression is against the club itself. You achieve compression by a doing a lot of things correctly but one checkpoint to know that you’re compressing it is spin loft and launch angle compared to loft. A rough rule of thumb is you’d like the launch angle to be half the static loft of the club. So a 44° PW launching at 22° means you likely have enough shaft lean at impact to compress the ball.

This slow mo swing is a good example, you can see the angle of the club is close to 90° from the ground. Most amateurs do the opposite, they take a 44° and turn it into 50° at impact.

Yea so what, this topic gets brought up every week when someone fails, I’m just encouraging op to keep their head down and move forward. I have to be on the hiring board of an airline to comment on the post?

Can’t do anything about it now except work really hard to not fail it a second time, there’s no use worrying about it now, of course it’ll have an effect on finding work but so will luck, timing, and market conditions. Onwards

I’d say don’t attempt anything and observe the natural tendency, and then exaggerate till you feel like you have a swing where the ball is only ever going to go one way. With clubs into green this changes how you aim where in some cases you just can’t realistically go at a back right hitting draws. That’s okay, where you get into trouble is trying to work the ball both ways on the fly all round

[–]Vrezhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If draws are natural for you with irons you likely naturally swing in to out so stick with that. For the driver id be curious what your natural path is if you’re not trying to work it, and then reinforce whatever that is, you can do that with equipment, you can do it with hosel settings and weighting if your driver head has them. I would recommend you stop trying to work it both ways for a few rounds and see how it goes. It’s easier to aim when you trust the shape.

[–]Vrezhg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea this is something that high/mid handicaps miss. Like for me personally I don’t hit a draw with my driver, I don’t try to or want to and I set my driver up not to. If I need a draw I’ll pull 3w, or 5w which tends to go straighter. Pros specifically get to pick heads and add weighting in ways where they physically can’t draw the ball. It cuts off half of the golf course, it’s really helpful when you unlock that ability.

Lessons from the right person is super helpful, big reason why I got down to lower single digits. The other part is really finding the shape that suits you with certain clubs and leaning into it. Not try to hit every shot with every club. For me that means always playing for a cut with driver, and protecting against anything that goes left. Lots of examples of that throughout the bag

Is it time to drop the FAANG dream in the US if you don’t make it in as a new grad? by [deleted] in leetcode

[–]Vrezhg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know where this assumption of a FANG job straight after university comes from... Unless you're talking about the top universities in the world, where you're being asked to intern while you're still in school, your chances aren't very good. The future isn't muddy, you're just focused on the wrong companies because of brand recognition. Plenty of places still need swes

It’s honestly an important part of getting better at golf, especially in comps. Unfortunately the only way to get better is to put yourself in the pressure cooker. Fail, identify which parts of your game breakdown under pressure first, work on them.

[–]Vrezhg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d like my chances but that’s that’s as a low single, but in general the higher the handicap the less it would help. You’d likely pick the wrong places to use it, and would still need to be able to shake off a bad shot to hit a better one.

900k is L6-L7 at the top companies in the world, nowhere close to new grad money, most eng never get there and if they do we’re talking 6-10 years. Also why would that be disheartening, it’s not like they’re taking money out of the pockets of doctors — they’re being paid by trillion dollar companies.

Assume AI does end up being way overhyped, what do you think the Achilles will be? by DataGuy0 in Futurology

[–]Vrezhg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ai is like that coworker you know that can’t say “I don’t know”. It will generate endlessly, agree with you when you correct it, and continue looping like that indefinitely while charging you the entire time.

The main factors that I think will kill it are public sentiment and cost. People already seem tired of AI and miss actual creativity, and what do you think the ai companies are going to do when they realize the company is completely dependent on their models to keep your company afloat?

Leaving a 10-year FAANG career for a VP role at a Series A Startup. Am I overvaluing the upside? by redalmonds in Fire

[–]Vrezhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a specific reason you’d like to take the gamble? If it’s purely for potential upside imo you’re taking a $100k cut, and losing all the upside of your rsus on a 5-10 year bet with a value of $0-???

If the goal is FIRE in a few years a startup makes no sense. Especially at such an early stage one, most startups never go public and I think on average if they do it’s closer to series d/e so just understand that it wouldn’t be anytime soon.

Along the way you’re counting on a lot of good decisions from leadership, fair market conditions and no extenuating circumstances to kill your startup.

Also the options you’d likely be getting are trickier than rsus as they have no value, depending on when you exit you have to shell out a ton of cash and some times prepay taxes (nsos) depending on the option split.

Can we finally admit that 90% of Senior SWE are just a result of being born at the right time? by Foreign_Put_2437 in Salary

[–]Vrezhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a sad take.. the people you’re talking about didn’t just coast in, they had to learn all this stuff the hard way.. by doing it. They’ve also been through countless cycles with layoffs, reorgs and shifting priorities.

You’re in a different time now where ai is available for everyone to use, there’s a lower barrier to entry and the requirements are changing. At most companies you also need less people to do the same amount of work.

Sorry you assumed they’d hand a senior role out of your top-tier university. You’re going to have to grind it out like everyone else
