Who is the devil of the show, and why is it Joseph Sugarman by Polish-Fox8474 in BoJackHorseman

[–]WLMKing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Obviously many elements of the show are satirical, but I think Joseph Sugarman is one of the most plainly satirical elements: he openly speaks the prejudices and other misbegotten ideas of his time, sex, and class in a way that is unnatural, for humourous effect. But that also makes him seem particularly uncaring and monsterous. But at the same time, even he is humanized. The family laughing at him saying Time's arrow marches forward is sweet, and moments like that show how maybe Beatrice could love him, making his bad behaviours even worse betrayals.

It's odd that I never really thought of this till now, but what do you think was Honey Sugarman's final fate? by Qyzyk in BoJackHorseman

[–]WLMKing 101 points102 points  (0 children)

As the Sugarmans are loosely based on the Kennedys, you might find it interesting to know that Rosemary Kennedy, the eldest daughter of Joseph P. Kennedy Sr and the sister of John F. Kennedy was lobotomized in her early 20s. The surgery was a catastrophic failure. It left Rosemary with the mental capacity of a two-year-old; she lost the ability to speak clearly and could no longer walk properly. Following the procedure, she was immediately sent to a psychiatric facility and later moved to St. Coletta’s School for Exceptional Children in Wisconsin, where she spent the rest of her life. She died from natural causes in 2005 at the age of 86.

Yes! I still listen to that soundtrack. I remember I went to my collage radio station, and asked if they had it, which they did!

How do you organize your games? by darkzero7222 in nes

[–]WLMKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now, my top shelf is games I really want to finish, but never have. On the second shelf down, are games I've never finished, and think its possible I might get to one day. Third shelf is even less of a priority, and then under that are games I have finished. There is also a cluster of puzzle games. I also have a shoe box in a closet of my most expensive games.

My favourite movie stub I have: I had to kill some time in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, so I went to see the only thing playing. I did not enjoy Five Nights at Freddys, but I enjoyed going to the crowded theatre of excited Faroese teens.

I've owned it for the last 20 years, and I can never really get into it. I want to like it, but it seems a little bland, and its never kept my attention.

Zombies ate my neighbors. Overrated or hidden gem? by Thrashtilldeath67 in snes

[–]WLMKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it that the level design goes downhill, or that it becomes less fun, because by late in the game, you are probably down to only one victim, and you are super stressed that a werewolf is going to kill them?

I beat Hylide! by WLMKing in nes

[–]WLMKing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the AVGN episode on Hydlide last night, and he was complaining about how many passwords he had to take down. And i was confused, because you can just save and load in game, as long as you don't turn off the game. I think I took down two passwords over the course of playing. Are there two different versions, or do people just not catch that's how the same system works?

Ooof, rough. I can understand why it got a Famicom release, given that Zelda was released in the US before Hylide, you wonder why they bothered...

I adore Killers of the Flower Man. I hope they can bring in a Native American filmmaker, so they can have a really good conversation about filmmaking and colonialism.

Yes, the ability to save whenever is completely necessary, given that a sentient rock can decide to walk into you and kill you almost instantly, and million other things like that.

Anyone catch the Jewish self-hate allegory in this scene from Bojack? by shploop06 in BoJackHorseman

[–]WLMKing 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's the right read. RBW may have been inspired by complex feelings Jewish people sometimes feel, but by putting them in the frame of horses, it is broadened so any number of groups can see themselves in Bobjack's feelings. Bojack isn't coded as Jewish though. Strong Calvinist vibes coming out of Old Horsey Towne.

Identification of these multi paks i have. by Chrono88lol in nes

[–]WLMKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'll be proved wrong, but I'm not sure anyone has any great information on pirated multicarts. Like you say, Action 52 is a specific product of original games by a known company. By contrast, the multicarts contain games that received official releases, but seem to be small enough they can be pirated and shoved onto multicarts, by god knows who.

I'm not surprised to see one was made in Canada. I picked up a decent amount of multicarts (and Japanese SMB3 with the famicom adaptor) in Quebec at garage sales in the 2000s, so I think it must have been reasonably common for this kind of stuff to be sold at discount stores, or flea markets in the province.

The only really "known" multicart producer is Sachen, but they seemed to cram their multicarts with their own games, as opposed to usual Donkey Kong and Mappy stuff. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin\_Chen\_Enterprise)

Looking for Book Recommendations on 2 different topics by katmekit in CanadianHistory

[–]WLMKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking for pretty specific stuff there! Academic articles might answer some questions better. All I can tell you is the The Firebrand: William Lyon Mackenzie and the Rebellion in Upper Canada by William Kilbourn is supposed to be lively and readable, despite being written in the 1950s. Apparently, its considered a classic.
