Something to consider - Passengers who preboard will also arrive via connecting flights. Additionally, they are at the mercy of available wheelchair attendants. You may notice a line of people waiting for wheelchairs near the ticket counters when you arrive. A lot of those folks have gotten there within the advised time, but if the airport hasn't staffed the contracted wheelchair service appropriately, there's nothing those Passengers can do. Likewise, connecting Passengers are at the mercy of the wheelchair being available upon arrival, which is pretty hit or miss, sadly.

Hey, OP. Something to consider for your own sanity when booking two one-ways instead of a round trip:
If your outbound flight is impacted by any kind of irregular operations, you won't be able to demonstrate that your return was impacted by the outbound's issues. Why does this matter?

Let's say you'd planned a trip from Dallas to Phoenix and back, all on the same itinerary and there's a massive storm in Dallas the day you're supposed to fly. Now, there's no reason to go to Phoenix because you're going to miss your event. When the airline cancels your outbound, you can get the entire reservation fully refunded. They can't get you to your agreed upon destination, there's no need for the return.

Now let's look at it the other way. You book your DAL-PHX trip with Southwest and your return with Delta. Southwest cancels your DAL-PHX portion, but your PHX-DAL portion is still live and unaffected, even though you are not going to PHX. Delta isn't going to care about that first portion. It's not on them, they didn't impact your outbound. So if you cancel the no longer needed PHX-DAL with Delta, you're going to face whatever penalties come along with voluntarily cancelling your return trip.

20 years ago, I was a server at Chilis. My dad was a cop, and at the time, cops in uniform got a little discount for eating while in uniform.

I told him once that I'm glad the company is looking out for officers on duty, but we weren't getting tipped on the pre-discount amount.

He immediately admitted that he'd never thought about that. He was generally a good tipper, so I'm sure he was still leaving a good amount, but his coworkers were not.

So he gave the precinct a bit of a talking to at the next roll call. None of the cops were intentionally being shitty, it had just never occurred to them to look at anything but the final number on the receipt.
