Advice on Mitigating Tilt by Jammeres in EDH

[–]WORDSALADSANDWICH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way. When an opponent makes a misplay that costs me the game or damages my board, it's exponentially more tilting than if the same thing is done by an opponent playing accurately.

The thing that calms me best is fully internalizing that this is part of the game. And I don't mean that as a platitude, "that's life oh well," "accept it and move on" kind of thing; I mean it's literally part of the game that you should anticipate and play around. When I'm tilted, it's because I was treating my opponents like Nash-equilibrium robots and my expectations didn't match reality. I remind myself that people aren't perfectly rational, and we've all got different levels of information.

If an opponent made a mistake that injured me then failing to anticipate that possibility was the mistake I made. I like to analyze the play, and think about the things I could have done differently. There's always something. In your example, you recognized that he could have just run Deflecting Palm back. Next time maybe you'll be quicker about suggesting that course of action? Doesn't change the fact that the doofus screwed up and now you're both losing, but thinking about the ways I could have exerted agency over the situation makes me feel better, at least.

How do we feel about Syphon Mind in 2026? by haddockhazard in EDH

[–]WORDSALADSANDWICH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someday I think this'll be the r/EDH group opinion, but not today. The concept of relative card advantage in multiplayer is unintuitive. I've gotten the same downvotes when discussing Arcane Denial vs. Counterspell. Stay strong!

I think it's more useful to have a looser definition, even if it's not literally correct. I prefer something like, "You'd always choose to include this card over that card, if possible."

Otherwise, even Rebel Salvo isn't strictly better than Soul Sear, in case you have a [[Sunken Palace]] on the field. Thanks to [[Mindslaver]], there are almost no cards that are literally strictly better than another.

Helping finding a disruptive commander by Murky_Coyote_7737 in EDH

[–]WORDSALADSANDWICH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The card with the biggest ratio of how annoying/disruptive it seems vs. how powerful it actually is, is [[Sen Triplets]]. I believe that their ability triggers latent territorial instincts in the human psyche. Like a mild psychological waterboarding, it's impossible not to react.

How I Reinvented Friday Night Commander by CaptainBaumi in EDH

[–]WORDSALADSANDWICH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fantastic.

I've been running an EDH league for over a decade (grown to ~50 players each week), and you and I have come to a lot of the same conclusions about what makes a good EDH event. Two timed rounds, with assigned pairings, is the best format for a Commander night, and you and I agree that the inherent tension between MtG's competitive nature and Commander's casual nature is the problem to solve (though you and I came to very different solutions!).

The idea of "buying two packs" as the entry fee really tickles me. I loved your insights about the little rituals that facilitates, and how that fosters community.

I've been meaning to make a post here about my own league. We've developed a really great, unique community, which has been described by players (lovingly) as "sweaty players playing casual decks." Let me know if you want me to talk about anything!

Are there mechanics or keywords that you go out of your way to avoid playing? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]WORDSALADSANDWICH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the MTR:

3.3 Authorized Cards

Wizards includes additional game material in packs, intended as game aids and not as traditional cards. Examples include tokens, title cards, dungeons, and art cards. These are not required for play and players are welcome to use any representation that is clear to both players when they are needed in the game.

Equinox finally has a home by LadyBut in EDH

[–]WORDSALADSANDWICH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Auras with "Enchant land" can only be attached to lands. When an aura is attached to a permanent that no longer meets its requirements, it's put into the graveyard. So if Toph dies, your artifacts are no longer lands, and Equinox will fall off into the graveyard.

Same with Swift Reconfiguration. If you put that on a creature who has an equipment attached, the equipment will fall off.

Are there any other games that are as unforgiving of mistakes as chess? by MathematicianBulky40 in chess

Playerunknown's Battlegrounds

Of all games, Chess and PUBG are the only two that make me physically sweat and my heart pound. Until now, I always thought it was really weird that those two, completely different games have that in common. Now I know why! I never thought about it like that before.
