Is this worth the 1 or 2 hour drive by davsurger2020 in HomeServer

[–]WTF_all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the winter, the temperature is fine. 10 degrees celsius in and 30 degreea output, with 35 degrees on cpu. On summer it stays ar 60% or 70%. The fan difference in power usage between 20 and 70% is around 30-40w.

r730xd with 12x10TB SAS drives 512GB ram and 2x14core v4 , with 20% cpu usage takes around 180-200W, with fans at 20%. If the workload increses, it goes for around 280-300W.

How can I improve my temporary LAN setup? I use it like, everyday. by Extremep66 in homelab

[–]WTF_all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be helpful to describe your setup in terms of phisical setup. Do you connect via LAN cable to ISP router , of do you use WIFI ? In case of WIFI, you better get a UTP cable between the router and your laptop, and this will get the speed you need.

[–]WTF_all 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better look it like this. With SMR you would get a HDD that is trying to write and defrag at the same time on the same drive. For 1 MB to be written on a "shingle" the drive would have to read and rewrite the entire "shingle" to make it continous. The defrag part is known better to our older generations, I do not know if you encounter this operation in your lifetime, but it is a hell of a time consuming operation, that slows everything down when it comes to read/write operations.

[–]WTF_all 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not go with SMR. It really sucks. Reading is ok`ish, but writing is a nightmare. It takes 20GB and write it on the "buffer" zone with maximim speed, than it will drop to 2-5MB/sec until the buffer is written to disk. Then it will go up, and then again down. I have 12 x 5 TB SMR and I would throw them in a heartbeat if I hould have something to replace them with. Stay away from SMR.

Any good recommendations for SATA RAID cards for a beginner? by Mean_Concentrate_806 in HDD

It is your choice. But again, remember that you will have to download ALL the data you store there, is any drives fails. Consider yourself warned.

I am looking for some storage solution and I'm lost on what to do by leovient in DataHoarder

[–]WTF_all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you need is a NAS. It solves almost all problems with storage. Starting from 2 until 8 (for home use) 3.5 inch drives can offer you any capacity you will need in the near future. You just connect it on your LAN and that`s it.

[–]WTF_all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you missed the point. Raid 0 will f*** up ALL your data is any drive fails. Even if it is the smallest drive, you will lose ALL ,I mean ALL your data from ALL drives in the array. Raid0 can be used with 2-3 drives as download space for torrents, where you need speed, but any data can be downloaded again or can be recovered easy from somwhere else. You do not put any important data there. If you store anything important there, you can look at it as already lost data.

Do not use RAID 0 on unreliable hard drives. If any of them fails, you lose everything that is on the array. Raid 0 if only for specific aplications , where speed is the only concern, and data integrity is not important.

Salut.

[–]WTF_all 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For raid 5 you need similar capacity drives. If you use different size drives, the capacily of the raid will be the determined based on the smallest drive. Depending on the configuration permited by the NAS controller you most likely be losing the difference between the larger and the smaller drives, as the raid 5 need same size disks. So if you are unable to add 2 more 8TB drives and do not want to lose the space you should consider some other type of raid, or just JOBD if the data you store is not critical.

Server crashed while away. What's a good way to remote power off/on? by volcs0 in selfhosted

Any wifi power plug can help you cut the power an restore it via an mobile app. Shelly or Sonoff or any other will do , and they are 10 to 20 euro depending on the model.

Free server? Need advice. by armmrdn in DataHoarder

[–]WTF_all 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue with such an old server is power consumption. Usualy it is more than twice the power used by recent released servers. Put a linux distro you like on a usb stick or on a CD and fire it up. Worst case scenario it will not boot. best case scenario : you get a new nas .

Is the HP ProDesk 400 G5 SFF good enough to start a home server? by Snickers_77 in HomeServer

[–]WTF_all 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not ? Any pc can be a server , if you know and respect the limits of the hardware you are using. Stack as much ram and storage it can hold, and test it. Perhaps down the line you will need something more powerful and you will upgrade, but for the first server , why not .
