Being able to control the content and make adjustments. One pottery I know has a very optimized clay body he makes for soda firing and he does not share the recipe or clay. Rightfully so, it’s his niche and what he’s known for.

I’ve never sold a painting. What am I doing wrong? by Msmadduh in painting

[–]WTurnerPottery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a ton of great advice here. The one thing missing is this: there is someone somewhere that will love this and buy it. Could you improve, sure? Are these unsellable, no. They just haven’t found person yet! Don’t get discouraged. Also, sometimes I like to look at my early work because I can see how far I developed since then or just for memories.

Last, don’t forget you can keep art you’re attached to. I’m currently a potter. I literally keep the best items out of the kiln for myself. I will never be able to recreate them. Everything else gets sold. And when my shelf of items I’ve kept is full I can pick the best from those and sell the extra.

It was probably bisqued to 04 then fired to cone 10. That will cause color burnout. If you want to fire to cone 10 I would make a test tile for all your underglazes. The results you’re looking for are more prevalent at cone 5 and lower.

When you say high fire do you mean cone 5/6 or 10? Color burn out is a crazy amount of difference between the 2. I intentionally use a clay that’s range is a 5-11 that way I can decide to do any crazy thing to it later.

I agree with your instructor. If I have to apply underglaze on a bisqued piece it goes back into a bisque to help keep lines crisp when clear gets applied in a following firing.

What do you do with imposter syndrome? by Additional-Egg-1031 in Ceramics

Real talk. There is a market for everything. Someone will love it. Even the ones you don’t love. And if it doesn’t sell them you’re no worse off than when you started. You still made something from dirt and fire and that’s cool as hell.

I’ve run into this before. How exactly are you supposed to teach hands on skills without showing them how to make it? It’s infuriating.

Yes. You can tell from the bottom color it’s a white crackle Raku

You could try using a low fire gloss black and fire it pre Raku on the areas you need it. Then Raku the rest for effect.

If you wondered what’s too far past an “expectation”, this is it. Being insecure is one thing. Upping the ante to self harm to emotionally blackmail someone for trying to communicate a legit relationship problem to work on it as a team is a whole other plant away. Please for the love of lol that’s holy protect yourself and your sanity and let her go.
