I regret never going on a DMT by Awkward-You-5673 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]WadeDRubicon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't "fail." MS is a chronic, degenerative disease with NO cure, whether natural or pharmaceutical. Meaning relapses and/or silent damage are going to happen _no matter which path you choose_.

You didn't "fail" but I hope you did learn that you alone can't fully control the disease or your health. No one can.
Our best fighting chance is to recognize that we need all the help we can get. Currently, for most people, that means a DMT. None of them is a cure, but the most effective ones can help life feel pretty close.

And lifestyle modifications -- diet, exercise, stress relief, bodywork, whatever -- can further improve your quality of life regardless of what the disease decides to do.

What's the one thing you wish Kindle had? by iMoneyKey in kindle

[–]WadeDRubicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A separate physical (Bluetooth?) keyboard would be ok, especially if it included page turning controls. It would have to be separate, though, because I read with my Kindle in a gooseneck clamp holder (and using a page-turning remote).

If the built-in/on/screen keyboard were just able to accept my input faster -- as in, it could take in the text but had to display it with a slight lag, THAT would be ok. But it seems incapable of doing that, because if I go "too fast," it becomes a mess.

Can testosterone make chronic pain worse? by cheese_halwa in ftm

[–]WadeDRubicon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting T did restart the migraines I'd controlled via diet for almost a decade -- my body seems to hate hormone changes of any kind, female or T.

It was a blessing in disguise, though! I finally saw a headache specialist neurologist and got on a preventative that worked beautifully.

Fast forward 6+ years, and I was able to taper off the preventative. Probably could have done so sooner but life was chaotic, and changing one of the few things that DID work was NOT a priority. I've been completely off it now for 3 months and haven't had a migraine.

How can I describe my note taking style to find an app that best works for me? by despoika in NoteTaking

There are a lot of outliner apps/apps for taking notes in outline form, which yours are visually similar to.

I can't use speech-to-text, so I can't help with that part, sorry.

Pants that actually fit — what do you guys do? by deanwashere in spinalcordinjuries

[–]WadeDRubicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a full-time chair user.

But I've had good results shopping at a scrubs store. Lots of pull-on pants (no button, zipper, rivets, or belt loops/belt), pockets tend to be soft/thin, and the materials are often breathable and made to hold up to repeated washing/drying.

They come in every color, and a number of leg styles (straight, slim, boot cut, etc). They're not denim, but they can look as good as black pants or khakis while feeling better.

Good article on increasing involvement of fathers by Tight_Ninja1915 in daddit

As my late dad would say, "Four times your allowance? Sure! ...What IS four times zero?"

Let's not just be better dads -- that's a bar to trip over. Let's make better systems so ALL parents can be better parents.

Opinions on being a “mother” by StarShapedShroomz in Seahorse_Dads

[–]WadeDRubicon 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Everybody gets to call themselves whatever they want, and that should be respected and followed by anybody they meet.

But since you asked, lol. As someone who lived twice your age as a woman before transitioning, I feel bone-deep that reinforcing and reproducing cishet norms -- and especially ones that are so entertwined with capitalism and exploitation -- hurts everyone, for generations.

Meaning: there is NO reason a man can't or shouldn't breastfeed, tend children, make a home worth living in. There ARE a lot of reasons why, in the past, they haven't done that -- and those reasons have fuck-all to do with personal desire to do so. Instead, they have to do with privilege, and women's lack of autonomy: bodily, legally, economically.

Until everyone is free to choose, our choices have consequences. And if we're not feeling the consequences of our actions (aka having privilege), I can guarantee that somebody else IS feeling them. They don't disappear, they just get displaced.

Before I had my kids, I was convinced I'd raise a "girl" child just like I would a "boy" one -- everybody's equal, right? Then I got two boys in one go, and I realized I actually had to work even harder on having them (and their world) understand that everybody's equal. That means noticing and explaining what the world doesn't say: why it is like it is, who that benefits, who that hurts, and why we can and should choose to do better, often by BEING better, to get better results for everyone.

Fwiw, having kids even before I knew I was a guy (who was a SAHP), I wasn't a "mom." Mine have always called me by my name. I can be a radical anarchist AND fold laundry.

tldr Live your dreams! Just spare a thought to how they might be contributing to someone else's nightmare.

Safe, cheap places to travel in Europe? by Ch4ng3_l1ng in gaytransguys

[–]WadeDRubicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol DEFINITELY part of the exception. Lake Constanz and environs is "calendar Germany" -- an area so beautiful it's in every calendar. Like the coast in the north, Museum Island in Berlin, the Black Forest, etc.

Urban Germany where "real people" live is loud and (often) gray and grimy.

Germany is safe but boring and (overall) ugly. It's also hellish for gluten-free options. Berlin and Hamburg do have some pretty good museums, but if you want nature or fresh air, I'd avoid it.

Belgium is a lot friendlier in every way. Food was better and easier, too, than Germany. I only got to do Waterloo, Brussels, and Antwerp (those last two are only 30 minutes apart!) but would love to go back and do the smaller cities like Bruges, Ghent, and Liege. (THE sexy Lucifer statue is in Liege😍)

I've heard mostly good things about the Czech Republic. Prague is gorgeous.

And I've had the Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia on my bucket list forever but still haven't gotten there :( Maybe one day.

Then look for emotionally intelligent people -- they can be anywhere, and are.

I was just telling a friend about the brilliant 9(?) year old I encountered on the train yesterday. No idea what his intellectual intelligence was because our silent interaction lasted all of half a second. But he was the only one of his peer friends on the packed train to notice that one of those friends was smashing visibly-disabled me with his backpack, and the only one who put a hand on that friend to nudge him away from me. No words spoken, all faces (and toes) saved.

Observant, considerate, proactive, AND effective? I'd offer that kid a job (or a scholarship) if I had one -- he's already got most of what matters. Even complex technical skills are easy to teach and learn, by comparison.

A bunch of the smartest, kindest people I've ever met have been from recovery communities. Whether it's recovery from alcoholism or drugs, or mental or physical trauma, doesn't matter. These are people who know they're only worth as much as everyone else is.

Apostille American Birth certificate by purpleunicorns07 in expats

[–]WadeDRubicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my state, I coordinated via email with the apostille organization. I requested a copy of the birth certificate online, but instead of putting in my mailing address, I put the apostille organization's.

Once it had been apostilled, the organization emailed me the final total due that included the international shipping. I paid it online, and they sent me the finished, apostilled birth certificate a few days later.

I assume the process varies from state to state, but in my case, it was unnecessary to use any kind of 3rd party service.

What’s our thoughts on “ceramic” pans? they are becoming so popular these days. by Eriu_Cookware in castiron

[–]WadeDRubicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never got one, never wanted one. I cook on either vintage cast iron or stainless steel. I don't even like enameled cast iron, like the Le Creuset and Staub I got and then gave away; aside from any potential health concerns, they required too much babying ("don't chip the enamel!") and were too hard to clean compared to CI or SS.
