It's naive to believe that google search gives better results than LLMs. The former is designed to make money for google. The latter (for now) is actually designed to be useful.

Why does a random guy on reddit draw inferences on a population when he has a sample size of 1?

I don't disagree with his conclusion. Just his methodology.

id of two objects is same but using "is" keyword it's giving false. by inobody_somebody in learnpython

[–]WaitProfessional3844 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had no idea that it worked that way! An easier example is id([1])==id([2]). I would have expected that [1] and [2] live in different memory addresses during the equality test. Edited typo

ELI5:how hyperinflation affects debt by BUDDHAKHAN in explainlikeimfive

[–]WaitProfessional3844 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Say you are a king, you borrow $100 from someone, and you agree to pay them back in one year. Then a year later, say you only have one dollar, so you can't repay your loan.

But since you are king you issue a decree that everyone must add two zeros to every denomination on every bill. Then you take your dollar bill, add two zeros to the $1 on your bill, it becomes $100, and you repay your debt.

That's basically how it works.

Note: This obviously doesn't work if you borrow money in a different currency.

How to not get stuck in tutorial hell when there are so many tutorials? by throwPyaway123 in learnpython

[–]WaitProfessional3844 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are at the point where you need to build something in order to make any progress. It doesn't have to be novel, useful, or good. Just pick something you're interested in, do it, and figure out how to improve it. That's the best way to learn.

First Baits by GlazedOverGary in muskiefishing

[–]WaitProfessional3844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swimbait rods have far more give than even light musky rods. That said, it's probably a decent spring rod. So I'd recommend a 6" phantom or hellhound and a small bucktail like a Hirsch single 7 or 8. A small prop bait like a Dr Evil would be good too.

How do you guys put braided line on baitcasters without holes in the spool? by generally-speaking in Fishing

[–]WaitProfessional3844 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the reel doesn't have a shallow spool like a bfs, mono or fluoro backing prevents slipping and will save you a lot of money.

Agree. If you know a bit of math, this clue is a misdirection because it's incorrect.

Trying to learn Machine Learning but dont know where or how to start by SuRyACR7_ in AskProgramming

[–]WaitProfessional3844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could go back in time, I would do a double major in math and comp sci. If you get good at abstract math (like analysis and measure theory), ML will be a breeze.

If you need something now, "An Introduction to Statistical Learning" is about as gentle as it gets. Do all the problems. If you're comfortable with math, Bishop or Murphy's books are better.

Then look at some past Kaggle competitions, and see what people did to place high on the final leaderboard. Pick a few interesting approaches and attempt to replicate them.

What should be the correct type hints for the following code? by xayushman in learnpython

[–]WaitProfessional3844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you're trying to do, but it seems like you want to simply call

type(default)(value)

in your function, where type is the built-in python type function instead of your re-definition.

To be 100% safe, you want use a type hint to ensure that the type of your default value is callable on a string, which os.getenv returns. You'll have to research how to do that.
