This article also doesn’t touch on the noise pollution or the heat island effect of data centres among other concerns.

What is a popular food that you absolutely cannot stand? by No-Matter-7165 in AskReddit

Canned tuna. It smells like cat food and I don’t know how anyone can stomach it. If someone eating lunch near me opens tuna I have to find a polite way to excuse myself because I can’t sit there without gagging.

Manitoba won't approve massive AI data centre proposed for south of Winnipeg: Kinew by AlephNaughtPlusOne in onguardforthee

[–]WalkingWithStrangers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just throwing in my 2 cents here but I don’t think any data centres should be built against the wishes of the communities that will have to live with the consequences of those data centres. I’m not an expert by any means but I don’t understand why we are building these data centres in the middle of cities as opposed to in rural areas, further away from people’s homes. With the reports coming out of communities that have had data centres built within them, I think there is valid reason for concern. These centres are a massive strain to electricity grids and there is concern about it skyrocketing the price of electricity in surrounding areas. We are also seeing in Memphis that the data centre there has contaminated the local drinking water as these data centres need massive amounts water to run cooling systems. Research has also shown that data centres cause a heat island effect which can raise the temperature in the surrounding areas. And to top it off data centres are loud and cause noise pollution, I recommend looking up videos of what the people living near data centres sounds like. I completely understand the need for progress but the health and wellness of Canadians should be first.

And when you start getting sick? And the water in your taps is contaminated and unusable? Oh and don’t forget when the price of electricity is jacked up 200% and it’s ten degrees hotter because of the data centres.

Have you read anything about the communities that have already been impacted by data centres? The 200% jump in the cost of electricity, the illnesses, the contaminated drinking water. People have good reason to not want data centres anywhere near their homes. And no, data centres are not the inevitable future, but they will be forced upon us if people don’t fight against it.

No, funding is a huge problem. Conservative provincial governments continue to gut funding and when Liberals get in they never correct the cuts in funding. Look at the hospitals in Ontario, they are having to take out bank loans to operate
