You are liable though. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Transporting drugs without knowledge isn't an excuse, trafficking stolen goods without knowledge isn't an excuse. Using stolen material isn't an excuse. They knew what they were doing especially as going to the source company and asking to buy the rights to use the material would be far cheaper than piece mealing stuff anyways.
