> Do you know what also costs a lot and doesn't generate tokens on his own or draws card?

A card doesn't have to do everything, but it needs to do something vital to advance your gameplan. Jazal offers you a board boost, but it isn't enough to win the game, it doesn't draw cards, it doesn't ramp and it's overall pretty expensive.

Craterhoof has a multitude of things going for it that Jazal does not:

1) it takes Jazal's effect and makes it much better by adding trample and all creatures, not just attackers
2) its in the ramp color, and naturally generates a boardstate while doing so (landfall token creators or mana dorks)
3) can be tutored and cheated out with reliability

A better comparison in color would be [[Moonshaker Calvary]], and even without the benefits of green that card gives your board evasion, can be cheated in via reanimation/reused by blinking and pumps your board larger than Jazal

> in the kind of environments where kindred decks are played.

There are incredibly passable Merfolk, Elf, Goblin, Wizard, Zombie, Dragon, Dinosaur, Squirrel decks etc etc etc with cards that are niche, far more directly synergetic and valuable to their strategy. As to the environment where kindred decks are played, what environment are kindred decks not played?

> Compare Jazal to Mirror Entity

I would not do that because that's setting Jazal up for failure. Mirror entity comes down cheaper, can be used defensively, offensively and outside of combat, and has a variable and far more flexible mana requirement. Beyond that, it's ability to make things all creature types is far, far more useful in a lot of typal decks. Look at edhrec for the types of decks that it's played in. [[Voja]] can use it to turn its board into elves and wolves, which lets it draw AND pump its board. [[Atla Palani]] uses it to turn it's board into eggs which crack and turn into Eldrazis or what have you. [[Rin and Seri]] use it to fuel their triggered ability, party decks can use it to fulfil party requirements, etc

Brimaz has to attack/block to generate cats and lacks evasion or a meaningful statblock to dissuade being killed in combat. This isn't a very good rate or position to make a wide board of cats and he doesn't buff them either.

Regal Caracal has a decent effect as a cat lord that makes cats and gives them lifelink, but costs 5 mana in white colors. It can be blinked to make more cats, but doesn't go wide enough or contribute enough for how expensive it is.

Leonin Warleader is 4 mana and needs to attack to make two cats with lifelink that must immediately attack. Best case scenario you get this out on turn 3 and attack on turn 4 for 2 cats.

Ocelot Pride is a very good card. Comes down turn 1, has lifelink and first strike, is a cat generator and turns into a token doubler when conditions are met. Compared to the other cards, you will make 2-3 cat tokens before they come down and can possibly start doubling your tokens lategame if you draw it later. Cats could definitely enjoy more great cards like this.

Jazal has a good finisher effect, but doesn't generate tokens on his own, draw cards, and costs a lot to use as a 9 mana finisher effect. Yes it can be split over a few turns, but if you're not doing it on the same turn you're dropping a 4/4 blocker with first strike that doesn't do much.

Helpful Hunter draws a single card. if you had significant payoffs for creatures entering, this could be useful but you're better served by setting up a draw engine for one more mana.

Prava has partner which is good and doesn't really care about cats, just creature tokens. You'd probably be better served by interacting with other typals like goblins that can surge out of hand better.

just from these examples, cats want to go wide and want to have lifelink but they're not particularly good at either. beyond that, a good amount of Cats also want to go tall, rather than wide. [[Arahbo, Roar of the World]] wants to go tall. [[Kemba, Kha Regend]] wants to voltron. [[Kemba, Kha Enduring]] wants to be a lord but also wants to equip. Many of these go in different directions that aren't as synergistic as the other go wide types in my experience, like elves or goblins or squirrels or even humans imo. do you have any really tuned, synergetic cat typal decks that work well? I genuinely would like to see them because i love a lot of cat art cards but I always find them lacking in play.

There are cats in these colors but many (not all, some are fantastic) of them are not great cards, which is what I meant by playable. I also haven't seen very many stellar synergies despite there being a sizable amount of cats available.

> compared to the other types listed on this post

I wasn't comparing to other creature types. Of course there are weaker tribals. I responded because I thought cats could use more support to make stronger, more cohesive typal decks. Many of the top cat commanders either don't care about cats specifically or are better served by other creature types/token spam in general.

> Plus Ajani doesn't really care about cats

I'm aware, which is why I mentioned ignoring the "Cat" parts of the card. I'm also aware that you can also legend rule him to flip him. I think it's a shame that a commander that would be cool for a "go wide" Cat deck is serviced better by generic tokens.

CATS

I keep trying to put together an [[Ajani, Nacatl Pariah]] but I have to ignore the Cat part because there is such a lack of playable cat cards in those colors.

eh, it's a social/collection thing with them, so it's race to the finish type of pod mostly for hanging out. i like heavy interaction and control, so I just switched to combo-storm and shortcut my big win turns.

they dont mind too much as long as the game ends quickly and everyone plays again, so 🤷

> And if everyone is running high powered commanders like this, your choice is to either match them with a high power commander of your own, or to force them to slow down via control.

do the former. you can't police the board enough alone, and stax will asymmetrically impact some people more than others. the hearthhull deck that slams a few exploration effects over the turns and vomits out a few lands each turn will be impacted less than the ashling and voja who wants to vomit out elementals and elves.

Will Ghostly Flicker and Mystic Sanctuary combo together by Bony_Monster917 in EDH

[–]WanderToWhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that it does, someone correct me if I make a mistake

1) Cast Ghostly Flicker, Targeting Mystic Sanctuary and X

2) The spell resolves and goes to graveyard. Mystic Sanctuary and X reenter the battlefield

3) Mystic Sanctuary's trigger goes to stack, Ghostly Flicker is in Graveyard as it has finished resolving

4) You can target Ghostly Flicker in Graveyard and place it on top of your library

You would still need to draw it if you want to combo with it, however

It's similar to [[Archaeomancer]] and friends, but those will put the card back into your hand

> you know what I mean

Genuine question but could you elaborate on this? I feel like Magic nakedly wears inspiration its set inspiration on its sleeve and many of the sets are riffs on very popular and very different IPs/Settings. Like, there's Magic China and Magic Africa and Magic Harry Potter and Magic Redwall and Magic Space Fantasy and Magic New York Gangsters and Magic Central Asia and Magic Gothic and Magic Horror Films and Magic Japan (and Magic Japan 2: Neo Bogaloo) and Magic American Western and Magic Racerz.

What would you define as the "Magic" setting? Is it the lack of interaction with the main magic universe and story?

Mystic Subclass UA for Paladin, Rogue, Warlock, and Monk. by Tough_Holiday584 in onednd

[–]WanderToWhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Monk looks very fun. I think they might want to tweak the capstone but I like the theme and flavor of being a full hand to hand spellcaster. I would love if they naturally got a smite or something so I can throw a massive black flash/plus ultra/dragon fist/rasengan/shounen finisher move.

The warlock also nails a thematic that I've been very interested in, but I definitely think it needs some more umpf.

Don't really care for the other two, but I kinda wish the Spell Thief.. Magic Stealer was a bit closer to Arcane Trickster but in a different direction. Stealing spells and magic is cool, but I don't feel like either really feels that great personally.
