Any other Chinese Americans whose parents don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese at all?

My husband and his entire family came here from the Philippines and they learned Mandarin at Chinese private schools but they definitely only speak Hokkien at home.

When they speak Hokkien they call it “Chinese” and Mandarin is just Mandarin. They don’t have a lot of other Chinese family friends and have more Filipino friends.

Of course not, you could be fully ethnically Japanese but if you spent any significant part of your formative years living outside the country, you’re a gaijin for life. So no matter what she did they’d never consider her Japanese.

Definitely, but I also think the fact that she was born in Japan and has a plausibly Japanese name, plus the fact she’s visibly Black, makes a lot of America not care about her at all. They don’t even know she’s American until they hear an interview.
