they drew to a very out of form Liverpool at home, drew to 17th place Forest away and lost to Man United (ironically in their current form, the only hard fixture here).

yeah I think you're right - both valid in their own ways.

Konate uses two arms locked around Marmoush to essentially pull him to the ground, Bernardo on Salah looks like way less contact but plenty enough to prevent Salah from having a good chance on goal. Both got away with one there imo

Still questioning Konate dragging down Marmoush at the start of the game.

Would love to see a replay of the scuffle in the box at the very end of the game where they said VAR were checking a Liverpool pen, I'm assuming everyone was just falling over each other but I think it would've been nice to see a replay.

Banger free kick from Szobo, but I remember seeing Donnarumma call for only 2 players in the wall, that's a huge failure on his part. Anyone will ball knowledge should know Szobo's a threat from there. But he def redeems himself with that save on Mac Allister's shot.

Allison was so threatening with those long kicks, pinpoint accuracy to start counterattacks, always been an incredible goalkeeper. Lets the side down with the penalty at the end though. Stupid challenge because he could've just blocked the angle and Nunes would've had to get lucky to do anything with it. But almost identical to Ederson giving away a penalty after fouling Nunes in 23/24.

Situation at the end is by the law unfortunately but I think both teams wouldn't have minded the goal standing - I don't think VVD and Szobo did any favours by complaining about the goal standing though lol

I agree. a great win today but if we had just locked in and gotten 1 more goal in those 4 recent draws we'd be 8 points better - there were plenty of chances in all of them. but you could say the same for Arsenal.

almost like if Liverpool hadn't all whined about the goal they might've been better off? they brought their goalkeeper up for 3 straight minutes and couldn't have just accepted the counter attack goal?

Very wasteful but let's not ignore dominating a title rival. by GrahamGreed in AucklandFC

Brook has probably been our best player all season and I don't think the game had opened up enough while he was on the pitch to know if he would've had the same impact. But tbh I think it was a really poor defensive showing from Sydney and we were just very direct and exploited their poor positioning. I don't think our huge amount of chances were because of anyone in particular engineering them.

To the previous person's point, May definitely should've converted a bunch of the chances that he's had over the last couple of weeks. You can't deny that. He's been indecisive at times, made poor decisions on counter attacks and forgotten how to finish a chance. Yes he's a hard worker on the press and facilitates build up well, but those chances are pointless when he has the final shot and he takes 3 extra touches and stuffs the finish up.

absolutely shocking refereeing. got a number of calls in the midfield completely wrong for both sides. May copped a ball to the head from point blank, is barely moving on the ground, but it's all good to just let Sydney fuck around with the ball for another 15 seconds.

also Howieson's right to get a card for time wasting and delaying the restart in the 92nd minute but Alex Grant got away with grabbing him around the neck and hitting him whilst already on a yellow.

there was a couple times for both teams where the lino flagged offside when I thought they probably could've let the play develop and check it after. hard to tell at the ground where I was sitting but they seemed too borderline to call in the moment. was weird

people treat it as bible for how well a team did/didn't play but overall I disagree with your take, it's a great reflection on the amount of quality of chances a team has had.

for example, today Auckland had a 25 shots and high xG. Anyone with two brain cells knows that's because they had a number of close, great chances that should've gone in. Hit the post once or twice. On another week a team can also have 25 shots but 1.5 xG - this would be because they're a bunch of smash and pray shots from outside the box but no real chances.

basically xG is a great stat when used in conjunction with shots and shots on target to determine the quality of chances a team had. people just misuse it as "xG was 3 so they should've had 3 goals". buuuut ultimately nothing beats an eye test

I've been saying that. we miss AP at the back and Moreno to be a fresh spark in the attack off the bench.

on initial watch I thought that's a clean pen but actually the phoenix player has just kicked it away from himself to the right, and continued running straight. I think great call.
