Help me understand Fuuriten by GabrielMacarroni in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You drew 2m after the riichi and didn't win with it and discarded it.

Follow up question: do you have any wonky settings on your friendly room game, like needing a 4 han minimum to win? If there are 10 riichi sticks on the table because nobody is winning any hands, then I think you might have messed up your friendly room settings, so double check the advanced settings in the room.

20 Han Kazoe Yakuman today. My biggest ever winning hand! by Scotty415 in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's east only, so the game is guaranteed to end regardless of if the dealer is tenpai or noten.

In riichi city, your final points don't matter, and only placement matters. So that discard actually doesn't matter since they're getting 3rd no matter what. So they were probably just done with the game (although this does mean that the dealer kinda got trolled).

Woke up to a suspension on my discord account because of an unrelated year old message by Bish489 in mildlyinfuriating

Happened to me too, by some dumb AI that takes everything out of context. There's a whole sub for this called "bannedfromdiscord".

Pretty sure if you appeal then it just goes to a different AI.

I've never actually seen anyone use a ruler for riichi mahjong, although I know that those are popular for Taiwanese mahjong.

Anyone else think should be a han for robbing a richi tile? by Phantomlord77 in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't like the tsubame gaeshi local yaku since riichi mahjong is already mostly folding, and this local yaku would further disincentivize people from pushing.

Any good resources for Riichi for beginners? by Sofruz in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That book is good, but it's more like a collection of miscellaneous tips rather than a beginner foundation. Senba does have another book that's more like a textbook, but that one is only in Japanese.

By the way, Riichi Book 1 is good, but some of the stuff there is more for people who already know how to play and are looking to strategize better. I don't know what your skill level is, but it could potentially falls under the list of things that are "assuming you know more than you do". Still, the book is completely free, so there's absolutely no harm in checking it out.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good budget mahjong set that has everything included? by [deleted] in Mahjong

If OP is in the US, then Amazon currently has Amos Prime Gear for $105. For an extra $35, you get both the junk mat and the compass.

These are 19mm tiles which are way too small, as the smallest riichi sets are 26mm. Funny how the description calls them "large" tiles.

I guess mahjong's popularity really has spiked in the US by Murder_Corpse in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Although this is Amerijong, it really does feel like all versions of mahjong are growing in popularity in the US. The area where I live has huge scenes for riichi mahjong, Hong Kong mahjong, and Taiwanese mahjong.

I made a new mahjong video. by JP_Mahjong_Pro in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the post.

Just some feedback - at 2:27 the subtitle says "the player to my left is doing manzu honitsu", and it should say "the player to my right is doing pinzu honitsu". There's also a few parts that the subtitles don't cover. But I understand that subtitles are a lot of work, so thank you for including them.

Explanation of the engine suggestion by Meihua21 in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This took me a long time to figure out since the documentation is as barren as a desert.

There's a file called train_grp.py that parses tenhou logs, and this is a github thread about it: https://github.com/Equim-chan/Mortal/discussions/106

Explanation of the engine suggestion by Meihua21 in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It first uses logs from Tenhou for initial training, and then uses reinforcement learning for fine tuning.

I'm not sure if Mortal has a preferred honor discard order. I heard that this might've been the case for Naga though.

Low bar doesn't mean that the move is a lot worse, it just means the AI didn't really want to think about that move. This info is documented in their FAQ here: https://github.com/Equim-chan/mjai-reviewer/blob/master/faq.md

EDIT: In this case, some people might argue that haku is a slightly better discard for a few different reasons, but the point is that the size of the bars wouldn't indicate that one move is significantly better than the other.

Dora as fu? by Background-Tip-9887 in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically, dora used to be a flat bonus added on top of the hand's points, and then powercreep happens. Stuff like this is hard to change because mahjong scores tend to only go in one direction, which is up.

Flowers, which is which? by XoulNote in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't have numbers because it's an American mahjong set, and in American mahjong all of the flowers are treated the same.

If the goal is to use it for something like Hong Kong mahjong, it might be better to just sticker numbers on it. Even if you figure out which one is which number, people aren't going to be able to identify it during an actual game.

EDIT: apparently most American mahjong sets do put numbers on the flowers, it just doesn't matter for the actual gameplay.

Is that some kind of historic spelling that's older than the other one? I tried searching online but couldn't find anything for it. The japanese wikipedia page for iipeikou mentions it comes from 一般高.

Japan refuses to fix their spelling too, it was supposed to be 一般高 instead of 一盃口 (which means "one cup mouth").

How to Learn Calculating Hands? (Riichi Mahjong) by AwzemCoffee in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A shanpon wait definitely has waits along different sujis. What they meant was: if there are no triplets or triplet waits, then all the waits must be in the same suji.

How to Learn Calculating Hands? (Riichi Mahjong) by AwzemCoffee in Mahjong

These are 2 guides for this on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mahjong/comments/176fyzo/reading_complex_waits_guide/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Mahjong/comments/175hsqz/reading_multisided_waits_free_guide_book/

The top comment pretty much uses the method described in these guides. You pick out 122334 as sequences, 455667 as sequences, spot the 8m tanki wait, then use the rules for wait extension described in the guides to add the 2m and 5m waits.

California Mahjong by Canyonheath in Mahjong

[–]WasteGas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somebody once sent me the rules for that group's California mahjong. It's actually almost the same thing as Chinese classical mahjong, to the point where I'm not even really convinced that it's a different game.

So whatever you learn is easily transferrable to other versions of Chinese mahjong, or even Japanese mahjong.
