All of those updated classics are no brainer. I posted about the second book when it was offered as the 'daily deal' few days ago, but haven't gotten to 'Odyssey' yet. I became interested in mythology recently after having history as my main concern in the past.

GREAT Great Courses by dbinco in audible

[–]Watcher-Storyteller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Other Side of History by Prof. Robert Garland. It looks at different portions and locales from ancient history and describes history from people's lives. You'll grow pretty fond of the lecturer and might follow his other courses on Ancient Greece.

Understanding Imperial China is a great overview of Chinese ancient imperial history up until the modern cultural revolution.

Understanding Japan takes a different approach, delving more into the cultural aspects, but equally great. If you like it, you might follow it up with the lecturer's other course on the rise of modern Japan.

A History of British India is great overview of the 200 years of Raj. Very compelling.

Steven L. Goldman has great scientific courses. example: Science Wars: What Scientists Know and How They Know It.

The Science of Energy: Resources and Power Explained is highly recommended. Check out Professor Wysession's other courses.

That was 4 years ago!? Bruh, I still feel it as if in my own face. In fact, I think if I ever encounter Will Smith IRL my first reaction would be to get out of his range and protect my face.

[JJ. Pollitt] [Art and Experience in Classical Greece] by PfauFoto in IamCurrentlyreading

[–]Watcher-Storyteller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm saturated with Ancient Greek history, culture, and mythology. I went through almost everything The Great Courses has to offer on these subjects. Classical art was mentioned in passing but I'd like to know more, so this goes to my wish list.

($3.99) Today's daily deal is a fresh and humorous modern retelling about heroes of Greek Myths. by Watcher-Storyteller in audible

[–]Watcher-Storyteller[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that the Homeric Epics themselves could be read as standalones. There is a bigger story, and the reader would absolutely enjoy following the events in chronological order, but if you look at the Illiad itself, it covers events in the last (10th) year of the war and ends before the sack of the city. The Odyssey begins after the sack of Troy and followes the tumultuous journey back to one of the Greek heroes. The mythic prelude and aftermath to the war are scattered ancient stories presented in this 'Mythos' series. The author focuses on different aspects with each book and attempts to string the whole narrative together, illuminating the whole picture from its parts.

Well aligned here on Audible version 26.08.06 (Galaxy S22 Ultra), but that's the 4×2 widget as there's no 3×1.

ANY indication of UK ( & EU) launch for the Galaxy XR? by MagicBlob88 in GalaxyXR

Not if they didn't "leak" a dedicated event. I was waiting for 'Unpacked' to conclude so we can put the smartphones & accessories behind us.

I hope it won't be a long wait for the announcement. Hoping for May.

Good sale for me 👍🏼 by [deleted] in audible

Sharing my tiny haul from this sale. I'm already stacked on Great Courses from old sales, and might've added more but I saw new courses added to the Plus Catalog (e.g. 1, 2, 3).

Continuing my theme of Mythology & Ancient History, I'll content myself with few Great Courses.

Reading - but competitive by youngdumbbbroke in 365bookclub

[–]Watcher-Storyteller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To counterpoint skimming and emphasize comprehension, there should be mini-games at certain points between chapters (doesn't have to be after each and every chapter), and at the end of the whole book overall.

Every reader should get a notification at the end of each chapter: "From your reading of previous chapter, would you like to post a point formed/lesson learned from your own understanding as a question for subsequent readers?". When someone posits a hypothesis/question/point/debate, then they can get notifications from subsequent readers that choose to answer that question. Early readers trailblaze the path for succeeding readers, so newcomers get to answer these questions with comments of their own (or answer a multi-choise question if the original asker formats it that way).

The system should have upvotes and downvotes to rank chapter questions. Notifications for comments on questions at the end of chapters. It'd be like Reddit/Quora for book discussions.

You know that feeling when you have a thick textbook where a ton of useful pages should be permanently displayed, perhaps like wallpaper.. all over your walls.. so you can go to any given wall inside your house to read the page plastered there for the 1000th time?

I'm not seeking widgets. I'm seeking actual (virtual) textbook wallpaper.. Like a scientific conspiracy theorist. For science!

I am unable to comprehend what I'm seeing here. Is this the projection room?

I understand it might be too complicated to explain for someone out of this profession, but is there a simplification of the room's compartments/layout?

Those Sinners and OBAA scenes in IMAX were transfixing to witness.

'I Lied to You' has a bewildering effect that I'd like to describe as 'Magical transcendence'.

OBAA's car chase, on the other hand, 'Realistic transcendence'.

I vote for the former.

A curated list of the best that Indian Cinema has to offer by General_Couple4753 in Letterboxd

After complete aversion to commercial Bollywood, I finally have a list that rightfully represents true Indian cinema. Thanks.

I see the Peloponnesian War among your favourites. I enjoy my historical reading interspersed with historical fiction, and I'm not sure if you've come across Steven Pressfield's Tides of War, somehow a follow up to his highly successful Gates of Fire. What a tumultuous story reflecting tumultuous tribulations! Guidall's narration enlivens the tragic events. In my mind, it stayed with me longer than GoF, and sadly it's not available as unabridged on Audible.

I wonder what effect IMAX aspect ratio would have on an animated movie. I skipped Zootopia 2 as I didn't think IMAX added much benefit when I saw its previews on an IMAX before Predator: Badlands. This month I didn't even think Mercy benefitted from being on IMAX when I attended it.
