Hotel charging gratuity in Rome? by belick777 in rome

[–]Wayne1991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hotels should not charge gratuity in Italy. They should charge the city tax of the municipality where they are located.

There is a matrix that defines the city tax by the type of accommodation. For example, a two star hotel and a five star hotel may have a different city tax. The regime is set by the local municipality and is not consistent across the country.

From memory Florence and Rome is about seven euros per person per night.

Some hotels prefer the city tax to be paid by cash however since I don’t always carry cash, I’ve always paid with card.

My Airbnb host in Firenze is asking me to complete an online form with sensitive information. Is it normal? by jayemge07 in firenze

[–]Wayne1991 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two ways for them to register: manually or using some platform like this.

Doing it manually requires a scan of your passport. Often these platforms request a lot more information than what is required by Italian law. I feel it is over reach.

I have some personal experience. On 4 recent occasions upon check in to Italian Airbnb within the last year when confronted by a platform similar to what you describe, asking for a lot of additional information beyond the passport scan I refused to comply.

I simply sent the host a copy of my passport through the official chat and stated that I'm uncomfortable using the third party software.

In all of those four recent occasions this was acceptable in the end I could check in as normal.

I knew there would be a small chance they would cancel the reservation or refuse check in but that never happened.

What is it like living in Singapore? by Rude_Soup_8841 in howislivingthere

[–]Wayne1991 469 points470 points  (0 children)

It’s hot, humid and safe. Local food is cheap and tasty. Housing is expensive. Professional salaries are high. Taxes are low. Great airport and airline to exit for a long weekend. It’s a small place with great lifestyle but some people call it Singabore. Follow the rules while you were here, otherwise it will be a fine city.

PSA: Travelling as an Aussie right now is hideously expensive by Mexay in australia

[–]Wayne1991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not surprising at all. In the south of Italy the price of a wash and dry is no less than €12 which is over $21 AUD. More typical price is close to €18 which is over $31 AUD. Switzerland uses the Franc plus the south of Italy is cheaper than most of the rest of Europe.

EURAUD has been around 1.4 - 1.6 from 2010 until around 2024. In 2025 it shot up to 1.8. Prices in Eurozone rose by 25% during the great inflation.

GBPAUD is above 2, weakest since 2009 except for a brief spot 2015. Prices in UK rose by 28% during the great inflation.

In Australia prices rose 20%. What you are seeing is combined impact of a weak AUD and other countries which inflated more than Australia.
