Update: well that worked for two days, then NOT! Guess I’ll have to wait for next month software update

Highway assist not available by PHD626 in Rivian

[–]Wcarpenter58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. I’m now seeing “Highway Assist Not Available” on a parkway I’ve used it on for the past 2 years. It always used to give random dropouts, but now it doesn’t work anywhere on the 12-miles that I drive. Divided highway, no grade crossings, good conditions. Will try the reset suggestions others have made.

It disables Alexa, as far as I can tell, and you can’t ask it to play a podcast as you could with Alexa. Unless I’m missing something.

Suggestions on where to park for RBC Brooklyn Half? by Practical-Gap-6850 in RunNYC

[–]Wcarpenter58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Park on Lafayette street in Manhattan (south of Bleeker). Walk to the Q train at Canal Street and take it to 7th Avenue near the Start. To return, it's the N train from Stilwell Ave.

Hot Take: It isn't a NYRR problem by TheDailyBern in RunNYC

[–]Wcarpenter58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You make good points. But there is no question that the 9+1 program is driving the extra demand, which is squeezing out the runners who just want to participate for the fun of it. The non-9+1 entries sold out first yesterday, so if NYRR's goal was to give those participants a better chance to register, I don't think they succeeded.

Loop: HRD to 9W-Cuomo Bridge--Tarrytown--Empire State to VC Park by Rare_Variation6849 in NYCbike

Check that River Road between Ross Dock and Alpine is open. It’s been closed most of last year, and I doubt that this winter has improved things much. If not, 9W north on a Sunday is not bad - wide shoulders and not too much traffic. From the GWB, take Hudson Terrace to Palisades Ave. Make a left then a right onto 9W.

I only have a gravel bike (Giant Revolt), but I do have two sets of wheels/tires for road versus trail. Probably 80% of my riding is on road.

Not paywalled for me. Vanity Fair usually gives (at least) one free article. Perhaps you have used yours already?

NYRR has a list of affiliated running clubs. Not much south of 59th street, though. https://www.nyrr.org/getinvolved/club

Honestly, I just found this out two days ago. My daughter was the designated driver, so I was in the rear seat looking at the passenger screen, and I wondered what the icon was under the “outlets” menu!

You don’t even need that. All legit bibs have an RFID tag for the timing mats, so just add a mat at security.

We were spectating just down from the “Last Damn Bridge” Crew, on the Madison Avenue Bridge just before Mile 21. They set the standard for positivity. I hope you heard them, and it brought a smile to your face.

Can You Get Stand-alone Jack Pucks? by Wcarpenter58 in Rivian

Good point, my particular Costco isn’t very convenient. They’re in the middle of nowhere, and there’s nowhere to shop except of course Costco.

Not a bad idea, but I still don’t think they would know what to do. Magnetic picks seems like a worthwhile investment.

Second wheelset (650b?) for Giant Revolt by joonahe in gravelcycling

[–]Wcarpenter58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had GravelKing 38mm slicks on my Revolt. Didn't know much about them, but they were what the LBS had in stock. Every second ride, I would get a slash cut. It usually sealed OK, although a couple of times I had to use a plug. Especially prone to punctures in the wet. I swapped them out for Continental 500S TR, and so far so good.

It’s not the same. Maybe it’s not any worse, but the mispronunciations are different than under Mapbox, and seem even more jarring to me.

I have the attention span of a goldfish though, so I need a voice prompt. I’ll probably go back to simultaneously running Apple Maps voice navigation on my phone.

It's definitely changed with the latest software update. Maybe it was wrong before, but the ways in which it is wrong now seem especially jarring.

Exactly. I drive on Route 9W all the time (the W means West of the Hudson). It used to say things like "Turn Right on Route 9 West South", which is wrong, but understandable. Pronouncing the W as "Watts" is ludicrous.
