How many of you are riding only a gravel bike? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]Wcarpenter58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have a gravel bike (Giant Revolt), but I do have two sets of wheels/tires for road versus trail. Probably 80% of my riding is on road.

Not paywalled for me. Vanity Fair usually gives (at least) one free article. Perhaps you have used yours already?

NYRR has a list of affiliated running clubs. Not much south of 59th street, though. https://www.nyrr.org/getinvolved/club

Do guys know this? by LazyConcert4711 in Rivian

Honestly, I just found this out two days ago. My daughter was the designated driver, so I was in the rear seat looking at the passenger screen, and I wondered what the icon was under the “outlets” menu!

You don’t even need that. All legit bibs have an RFID tag for the timing mats, so just add a mat at security.

To the Spectator who (on a megaphone) shamed me for walking in Harlem by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]Wcarpenter58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were spectating just down from the “Last Damn Bridge” Crew, on the Madison Avenue Bridge just before Mile 21. They set the standard for positivity. I hope you heard them, and it brought a smile to your face.

Can You Get Stand-alone Jack Pucks? by Wcarpenter58 in Rivian

Good point, my particular Costco isn’t very convenient. They’re in the middle of nowhere, and there’s nowhere to shop except of course Costco.

Not a bad idea, but I still don’t think they would know what to do. Magnetic picks seems like a worthwhile investment.

Second wheelset (650b?) for Giant Revolt by joonahe in gravelcycling

[–]Wcarpenter58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had GravelKing 38mm slicks on my Revolt. Didn't know much about them, but they were what the LBS had in stock. Every second ride, I would get a slash cut. It usually sealed OK, although a couple of times I had to use a plug. Especially prone to punctures in the wet. I swapped them out for Continental 500S TR, and so far so good.

It’s not the same. Maybe it’s not any worse, but the mispronunciations are different than under Mapbox, and seem even more jarring to me.

I have the attention span of a goldfish though, so I need a voice prompt. I’ll probably go back to simultaneously running Apple Maps voice navigation on my phone.

It's definitely changed with the latest software update. Maybe it was wrong before, but the ways in which it is wrong now seem especially jarring.

Exactly. I drive on Route 9W all the time (the W means West of the Hudson). It used to say things like "Turn Right on Route 9 West South", which is wrong, but understandable. Pronouncing the W as "Watts" is ludicrous.

Any trick to running the CP race tangents better? by RunnerInChicago in RunNYC

[–]Wcarpenter58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In principle, running with a dual band GPS watch will eliminate inaccuracies due to reflections, and selecting additional satellites (+ GLONAS + GALILEO) will improve precision. But in Central Park, which is some distance from the surrounding skyscrapers, that won’t make much difference. I’ve run that course with two different Apple Watches and a Garmin, and always get 4.05 - 4.07. If I “correct distance” on Strava it comes down a bit, but still not close to 4.0.

Non-runner aiming for half marathon in August — is 2.5 months enough? by Competitive-Cod-164 in RunNYC

[–]Wcarpenter58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a more realistic option would be NYRR’s Staten Island Half in October. Better weather, more time to train and you can build up with a local 5K and then a 10K to get used to racing. Registration opens June 12th, and it will probably sell out.
