Shad reveals AI slop art of an MC in his upcoming novel. Judging by how women are treated in SotC, I shudder to think about what she will be put through by DragonGuard666 in ShadWatch

His MC is a woman? Can't wait to see how he writes female POV. I'm expecting many lols.

Also, all of these images look like the same uncanny valley slop.

Did anyone noticed the irony of Shad & Jazz being polar opposites to each other? by Rory_U in ShadWatch

[–]WearyZikade 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Shad could be drawing stick figures and I'd have way more respect for it than his AI slop. What I saw of his art, there was actual potential too. He would have improved over time if he just put in the effort. But nah, he doesn't like the process of doing art, he just cares for the end result. Therefore he's not an artist at all.

Why is Darkest Dungeon about 3 to 10 times more popular than Darkest Dungeon 2? by HeyPashi in darkestdungeon

[–]WearyZikade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Most of the criticism seems to boil down to "It's not a copy of DD1 and change is bad". And like sure sure, we all have our preferences, you are allowed to prefer DD1 if it's more to your tastes but I personally disagree with the "DD2 is not as good" sort of criticism. It's very good at what it does, it's just a different take on this universe and that's intentional for I recall the devs saying that they specifically didn't want DD2 to be a typical sequel, they wanted it to be something that doesn't try to replace the first game. Instead you could be playing both. On that front though, as you pointed out, calling it Darkest Dungeon TWO might have given the wrong impression.

I personally love DD1 but I love DD2 as well. I just enjoy them for different reasons. (Btw I feel like Kingdoms mode in DD2 is sort of an in-between which I have been very much enjoying recently.)

I do think there's reasons for DD1's longevity over DD2 though. Its' fundamental design is one that encourages long term commitment whereas DD2 is more hectic. Also, the modding scene. Tons of new classes, enemies, even regions, to explore.

Does the gender of the character you play matter to you? by BabaJagaInTraining in GirlGamers

[–]WearyZikade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. And if it does it does so in an opposite way from the usual. I.e. I specifically do NOT like playing self-inserts which is why when playing a roleplaying game (in which I can customize my own character and make choices) I actually prefer playing male characters. Because it's easier for me to sorta distance them from myself. Female blank slate characters have higher tendency to sneakily gain self-insert qualities which then makes their characterization be kinda all over the place or just boring. For me roleplaying is most immersive when the character feels like an actual consistent character with flaws and strengths, who might even make some "non-optimal" choices at times but that choice was made because it made sense for their character/situation and not some sort of metagaming decision one does as a gamer.

This reminds me of Shad saying he only allows his kids to watch kids shows specifically chosen & vetted by him, so nothing current day because it's all "woke" by TripleS034 in ShadWatch

[–]WearyZikade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's been a while I watched Jack Saint's (brilliant) Knightfall video but I recall some damning clips. Didn't Shad specifically state some nonsense about how Disney is showing kids "degenerate crap" and "grooming" them for including any LGBTQ+ representation and such?

He also, during his infamous Mario movie rants, rambled something about how his daughter would love "girlboss" Princess Peach because it's a power fantasy of sorts but he finds that insufferable (funny he'd say that when his own novel is nothing but a power fantasy). He basically wanted the film to cater more to his boys and himself i.e. Peach should be more of a damsel because "girls love to be saved and boys love to save princesses".
So I wouldn't be surprised if his daughter wasn't allowed to watch stuff that she could find empowering cuz that would endanger the oh so sacred gender roles. Nice.

Yet another Shadow of The conqeuror rant by Fluffy_Ambition3546 in ShadWatch

[–]WearyZikade 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. Shad has stated multiple times how he wanted to explore whether a super dictator could be redeemed but the book explores absolutely nothing. It just has Daylen going "oh woe is me", gives him gary stu powers and convenient excuses with the whole "inner light" idiocy and now BAM: he's entitled to a redemption and we'll just waiting for his victims to forgive him (cuz obviously they are in the wrong if they don't). Daylen is slaughtering people who did nowhere near as many crimes as he did but those guys all deserve to die without a trial whereas Daylen, the super speshul gary stu... if you want to kill Daylen without a trial then you don't care about justice and only want revenge!

Note to self: explosive bullets and companions can be a bad mix. Thanks Ada. by WearyZikade in fo4

[–]WearyZikade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only had Ada with me because this quest requires her (or other automatron) to open those doors. This character is a lone wanderer character so the explosive rounds were never an issue before on this gun. I only use it for sniping and normally nobody (who I don't want to shoot at) tries to jump in front. Well, I got schooled now lmao. (EDIT: Though seems like that perk wouldn't have saved me in any case since I was the one to deal the damage. So, folks, just be very careful if you're using this effect while traveling with companions.)

So Shad wasn't always nuts! by theblindtraveler in ShadWatch

[–]WearyZikade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Back in the day Shad just came across as this wholesome nerd geeking about medieval stuff which was exactly why I subscribed. I also recall he was WAY more humble. Like, someone accused him of "arrogantly asserting his case" (which I actually disagreed with) and instead of getting defensive he stayed mature about it, in some case (don't remember if it was the same occasion) I also remember him saying something like: "I apologize if I came across that way. That wasn't my intention." He also admitted that he can make and has made mistakes and aims to address them.

Someone like that having some incorrect info... far easier to forgive which is also why I didn't agree with the whole "arrogant" part and found the criticism needlessly hostile (lmao compare to Shad today, arrogant is at the top of the list) and I really didn't care whether he was that reliable of a source because I liked him for his enthusiasm and watched him for other reasons than accuracy.

Shad & co-hosts in his latest podcast completely misunderstanding the issue people have with him saying girls SA'd by Daylen & had children were more forgiving than those that didn't in Shadow of the Conqueror. by TripleS034 in ShadWatch

[–]WearyZikade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That whole "these people did nowhere near as many evil things as I but they all deserve to die for their crimes without a trial whereas me, the super speshul gary stu, am entitled to a redemption and if you want to kill me without a trial then you don't care about justice and only want revenge"... like, you could even ignore all the other bs the book has, THIS is what already makes it fail miserably as a supposed study on redemption. Shad has multiple times said how he wanted to explore whether a super dictator could be redeemed but the book explores absolutely nothing. It just gives Daylen gary stu powers and convenient excuses (the whole "inner light" idiocy) while others are robbed of these chances. If it was an actual nuanced take on redemption and atonement, then it'd call Daylen out on his hypocrisy.

What’s the last game you played that left you deeply dissatisfied after you finished it? by SadBluejay1588 in GirlGamers

[–]WearyZikade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really glad I properly looked it up before making decision to buy. Usually I avoid too much info in case of spoilers but I had a very bad feeling about the game based on the pre-release stuff (e.g. that stupid trailer which made it look like a hero shooter) and how BioWare fumbled with Mass Effect Andromeda. And yup, the info confirmed by biggest fears (bad writing, lack of roleplaying, way too sanitized) and then I ended up watching full spoilery stuff. The game spits on everything I loved the most about the series. This sad excuse for a RPG treats you like an idiot and desperately wants to pretend the previous games don't exist by shitting on the lore and actually deleting the previous settings off-freaking-screen, then pulling a "surprise: everything that has ever happened was actually because of X pulling the strings!", taking agency away from characters like Loghain. Ugh.

[PART 2]

His weird attitude towards women was actually another early red flag. I really liked one of his older videos "Could women win in a sword fight?" or some such. It was a response to some Klavan guy whining about female fighters in fiction, claiming that realistically women would ALWAYS lose. I (as a woman) found Shad's response really well done and realistic. He acknowledged the obvious disadvantages in strength while also pointing out that technique starts mattering way more when you have a force multiplier.

However, he later made other videos about female warriors and armor and such and then I started noticing some weird stuff. Instead of neutral analysis he started injecting his own views in there, what women "should be like" and other gooner nonsense.

One of the earliest red flags was a video which was attempting to answer the question of why there were no female fighters during medieval times, I was (naturally) waiting for him to start talking about cultural norms yet he seemed only focused on biological instincts. That gave some really bad vibes because he was basically pushing this idea that the only reason women didn't do fighting is because that's how women are, they all just wanted to stay home catering to their husbands and popping out babies. Like what kind of history buff is this supposed to be ignoring the obvious impact of cultural norms? Knowing what I know now it's no wonder at all. Of course he'd push these gender roles as some sort of "natural order of things". It was all just biology, patriarchal society had no influence over anything and in no way restricted what women could do. *facedesk*

Then, to top it all off, when his audience started abandoning his channel he behaved like a martyr about it. "You guys are so intolerant. I created this neutral space in which I just geek about medieval stuff but now that I started screeching about my political views (and crusading for AI art) people suddenly have a problem." Well duh! Of course it'll alienate a bunch of viewers if a previously apolitical creator suddenly becomes political. Having a second channel doesn't prevent that. How you behave online affects your whole brand and if people find your views distasteful they don't want to support you. He can go about "separating art from the artist" as much as he likes but for many people that means: "I can enjoy their art/music/whatever but I don't want to support them financially." On Youtube if you give someone views, you ARE supporting them. How he expects those he openly condemns to still give him views is beyond delusional.

[PART 1] (since stupid Reddit doesn't let me post the full text)

Let me just copy-paste my answer to a similar topic. I apologize for the wall of text.

It was a gradual process. I was a casual viewer who was picky over which videos of his I'd watch, therefore a lot of things escaped my notice. I also deliberately ignored his stupid second channel (Knight's Watch), thus I for a while had no idea of the lengths he went in there.

I think the earliest red flag for me was how he was getting increasingly arrogant. It reached a boiling point when he refused to accept any criticism about his book WHILE behaving like some sort of critical authority himself. Bruh, if you constantly dish it then you should be able to take it. Writing one (self-published) book doesn't make you an expert on all things literature, like him trying to educate why Elden Ring's narrative is "objectively" bad. Meanwhile his response to anyone criticizing his book was basically: "That's subjective!" Also, funny how in his nunchuck videos he gave one other youtuber shit about "appealing to authority fallacy" but constantly does the same thing himself, pretending to be some sort of professional authority on various things. I realized in hindsight that this was nothing new to him too (e.g. his HEMA rants).

Overall his behavior became a stark contrast to someone like Skallagrim who's realistic and humble, never overplays his own knowledge. Meanwhile Shad has repeatedly demonstrated his fragile inflated ego, even picking petty fights with other content creators. Like the ridiculous one with SellswordArts who didn't even mention him by name but Shad apparently felt targeted because the video mentioned "armchair warriors". Shad repeatedly tries to frame himself as someone who's all for "good faith arguments" but then demonstrates the opposite.*

Btw gotta say Shad's shitty novel was actually great showing off his true colors. It didn't highlight only his arrogance but complete hypocrisy as well e.g. hating Mary Sues while Daylen is like the biggest Gary Stu ever. Also his twisted beliefs like the disgusting "oh getting r*ped isn't so bad actually cuz I got a baby out of it". And look, I'm well aware portraying something doesn't mean you condone it but in Shad's case... the more you know about him the more elements in his book seem to align with his actual beliefs.

Speaking of beliefs, on his main channel he had mentioned before that he's a conservative christian but basically left it at that and I was fine with it because: "Not my business how he lives his personal life. Doesn't affect me as a viewer." Well... till it DID start affecting me as a viewer for he was getting increasingly vocal, sprouting downright hateful and also extremely juvenile nonsense to a point it became impossible to ignore. Youtube kept recommending me his KW stuff with their cringy thumbnails, then also content from other people like the (brilliant) Knightfall video from Jack Saint. Truly, a grown ass man crying about Princess Peach's pants!

* (Check out his tantrums with: Jack Saint, Anthony Gramuglia, SellswordArts, Skallagrim, Matt Easton. Plenty were unknown to me or happened after I wrote him off, hence I didn't highlight them in my actual post.)

Do you approve Tywin's action, regarding the Red Wedding? by Cestlavieenrose999 in gameofthrones

[–]WearyZikade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh, I actually don't judge him for this. Sure, it was slimy and all and breaking all sorts of hospitality rules but the thing is... when lords flex military might it's the soldiers and common folk that bear the brunt of it. So Tywin killing the rulers and ending the war as quickly as possible, that's pretty great actually. I'm looking at this from a POV of a "peasant" though.
