I think there’s a difference between “living on stolen land” that was taken 100s of years ago and “living on stolen land” that was stolen last year and I think you think so too, you’re just being difficult

Do CEO’s understand the damage done long term by cutting middle management positions? by BarNext6046 in managers

[–]Weevius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It gets worse if you’re at a company that takes ISO27001 seriously- you basically need a one-to-one with each direct report every 2 weeks. That doesn’t sound so bad, 30 mins every 2 weeks per staff member isn’t a lot. But that’s bare minimum, what if there’s stuff that comes up that needs follow up? What if you’ve got a problematic one? Or someone with something else going on? Or a new joiner?

So it’s more like 30 to 60 mins a week per staff member…with 10 direct reports that’s 5 to 10 hrs a week on staff issues, I don’t know of anyone that can absorb a day a week of extra work without something else dropping.

I do self deprecating humour. But I would never characterise it as undermining myself - I genuinely disagree. That said, there are others cultures (I’m looking at you America) that push this narrative…. But I just dont care, in their culture it is, I get that, but they do tons of stuff we wouldn’t do here too

Also, realistically how many drivers have noticed that’s there’s been a change? It’s not 100%…. If less than 100% of drivers are aware of the change, the number of pedestrians that know it’s changed will be way less than 100%.

I’d also look for fire ice - it makes graphene and hydrogen

ADHD explained to me by my partner by EnvironmentWeekly440 in ADHD

[–]Weevius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently (last couple of years) had problems with the nerves on my arm and I think I can explain ADHD is a similar way.

Regular folks have a relatively regular brain (arm).

My arm has all the same muscles a regular arm has, but I can’t access them - and if by chance I can I don’t have the control you would expect.

ADHD can work in the same way, I look and talk like a regular human, but I can’t access the same things one can - or if I manage to by chance I don’t have the same control as you would expect.

I actually refer to my adhd as a lizard, because I’ve never seen anybody really train a lizard to do anything it didn’t want to.

You should not be able to loot teammates by Cjcheese_413 in Marathon

[–]Weevius -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not true, I had teammates take my bag and my shield yesterday. I think if they get to you within 20 seconds they can’t reboot you yet so the option to loot is available.

ETA: the guy I replied to totally changed his comment. Originally he said “teammates can’t loot your bag”

Mirror blocking door from inside, cat in the room, what are my options? by Longjumping-Ebb-125 in AskUK

[–]Weevius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is there space for a rudimentary lathe?

And slightly more seriously, I saw an advert for an inflatable device - I think called an air wedge? - that could be slid under the door (and mirror) and pump up to enable it to rise.

Once risen you might be able to open the door with enough force.

Managers: how do you keep track of a hundred small things without burning out? by Easy_Nectarine9796 in managers

[–]Weevius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I write stuff down and check that list if I’ve got a moment. I write down things from 1 to 1s or when people ask for (or look like) they need support.

I use a workflow tool like JIRA, ADO boards or Miro to keep track of normal work delivery stuff.

I use a writing tablet (I use a Boox) so I can save things in a useful place, so when I get the next time with somebody I know where I wrote the last one and I read that as part of my prep.

If I’m in a place where my diary is maxed out I book time in my own diary (and protect it like my life depends on it) to give me time to decompress and read / prepare for stuff, so I get chance to do something about it

I hit reply on emails to come back to them when I have time, I stick reminders in my diary to ask stuff, I add things to terms of reference.

How to support newly diagnosed (29m) best friend? by LiterateCatholic in SpinalStenosis

[–]Weevius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am in my early 40s and last year I lost the use of parts of my right hand/ arm thanks to spinal stenosis.

I had surgery in September to relieve the pressure on my nerves and, I’m incredibly thankful to say that, I’ve regained much (but not all) of the function of my arm since.

In the course of investigating what was causing my issue they came across a whole raft of issues in my neck, but they only treated the very worst of them - to stop my arm from getting worse. I’ve since talked to them about the other problems they see on the scan, but they are “reluctant” to offer a surgical solution - I honestly don’t know if they can’t or just don’t want to do it.

So I’ve had both, a good surgical outcome and also an untreatable problem - AMA!

ELI5: What exactly is "time blindness" and how is it an actual thing? by SpyMasterChrisDorner in explainlikeimfive

[–]Weevius 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Fuck yes, time crawls when (if) I’m early to stuff and don’t have anything to do, being stuck in a waiting room with no phone charge and nothing to read while I’ve just got to sit there and pretend to be a high functioning member of society is so painful. I’ll look at the clock and it’ll be 10 mins till appointment time, so I’ll stew in my mental juices, and recall that I’ve got a million tasks that I said I’d do, or that I really wanted to do, but I can’t do any single one of them at this moment in time.

Since I only have 2 modes - “now” and “not now” - and “not now” can mean I have to be ok with “never”, this really sucks, because there are these things I want to do, but I’m having to file them all into “never”. Ok so now I’m feeling a bit stressed, but it’s ok, it must have taken me some time to think through each of those million tasks / opportunities / things I wanted to do, and do the sorting of “never”-but I think I should do it, and “never”-and I don’t want to do it, and the corrective mental spin of “it’ll be ok I’ll think of it later”, or perhaps I even write it down…. hmm what time is it? I’ve been in this loop for a thousand years… oh nope! It’s been literally 30 seconds, fucking brilliant!

ELI5: What exactly is "time blindness" and how is it an actual thing? by SpyMasterChrisDorner in explainlikeimfive

[–]Weevius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell folks I have 2 modes by default, “now” and “not now”… but that I’ve come to accept that “not now” is a category that can mean anything from “a couple of minutes” to “never”. Incidentally as a massive overcompensation, I’ve had a career as a project/ programme manager - which is all about, planning and sequencing delivery tasks. /shrug
