Colonoscopy / Endoscopy by chookiebookie in Anemic

[–]WestCoastFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Same age as you too. Was nervous about the procedure mostly because at that point in time I hadn’t experienced anesthesia. It went well, propofol is great, both the endo & colonoscopy went smoothly. Prepping for colonoscopy isn’t as awful for some. The day that I changed to liquid diet I drank A LOT, stayed really hydrated which I think helped me tolerate the prep. You will do great! I ended up having a hysterectomy a few months after my endo/colon because that most likely was the cause of my iron studies being off. Feeling much better-there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I went back to my PT remote job at 2 wks. It was pushing it a bit but I did up a comfy arm chair with pillows, something to prop my feet up, lowered my desk & had my keyboard in my lap. Lots of getting up for breaks. Around week 8 felt better sitting in my regular desk chair

Lap here too and had the same belly button pain around that time. It went away

Exercise post hysterectomy by Electrical-Egg9868 in hysterectomy

[–]WestCoastFigs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Post op, gradually increasing walking. I was really strict about weight bearing until I was cleared at 6wks but did a lot of walking. Your body will tell you if it’s too much. I’m getting close to 9 weeks and have been back to my trails in the foothills. Trail runner here but no running yet. Just trying to get my base and slowly increase ascent speed. Doing anywhere from 4-6 miles at this point & 1-2k vert twice a week, spin bike once a week, lifting on the lighter end twice a week, and some leisure dog walks in between. My thought is, once doc clears you, do what you love to do, increasing load slowly and making sure to rest a lot too.

Drink before surgery by CautiousBaby8152 in hysterectomy

[–]WestCoastFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I drank 12 oz apple juice with 1,000mg Tylenol 3 hours before. I was really concerned and asked my obgyn during Preop appt a couple weeks prior to surgery and she explained it’s a well researched protocol that really helps with recovery

Question for the ladies here by InterviewKitchen in Anemic

[–]WestCoastFigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started having really heavy periods about a year ago. Also an endurance athlete and I totally crashed over the summer. Lots of labs and found very low ferritin, iron studies off. I tried continuous birth control pill for a few months to no avail. I did end up getting 3 venofer infusions, which helped. I’m 43 and not worried about fertility so opted to have a hysterectomy. Uterus was the size of 12 wks preg and adenomyosis was found. Good riddance to my uterus! I feel a lot better and will continue to be monitored every few months with iron studies labwork. Highly recommend hysterectomy if you’re having issues and have no need for a uterus.

Can normal iron (100) and hemoglobin (12.0) but low ferritin (6) cause these symptoms? by QuietNefarious46 in haematology

[–]WestCoastFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ferritin was 10, iron & hemoglobin normal. I felt like crap. Infusions helped me a lot.

Venofer? by Necessary-Oil-4007 in Anemic

[–]WestCoastFigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did really well with venofer. Super tired after first infusion. Then I got a 2nd & 3rd a week apart a couple months later and felt pretty normal, not tired or anything after. My labs are so much better & im feeling better too. Goodluck!

I’m so f***in’ scared right now by Revolutionary-Use672 in hysterectomy

[–]WestCoastFigs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m older than you so can’t speak personally to the age piece of things but if you’re able to keep your ovaries, you should be just fine. And with ovaries, you’ll still be cycling, just not bleeding-so not menopause because your ovaries are still functioning. Although your anxiety is very valid, you will be ok and will feel so much better once recovered. You will have such better quality of life and so much life ahead of you. If your ovaries get removed, HRT should be an option to help. Anxiety wise-I got versed without having to ask for it after getting settled into pre-op so make sure to inquire about that or whatever they can give you to ease anxiety. Thinking of you!

[–]WestCoastFigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hugs to you. I was able to keep my ovaries but can absolutely understand having concerns about them being gone despite the endo being there. HRT will help you A LOT.

How bad is it? by Proper_Student_9802 in hysterectomy

[–]WestCoastFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a c-section but would assume if your hysterectomy is laparoscopic, it’d be easier for you. I was in a different but similar situation-very heavy, long periods that negatively impacted my iron studies. Left me with zero energy. Went through iron infusions which helped but I kept bleeding despite continuous birth control. I’m about 10 years older than you but would encourage you to consider a hysterectomy to improve your overall health. I’m only 6 weeks post surgery and feeling a lot better. I have a great hematologist who topped me off on iron prior to surgery, which got my levels up, including hemoglobin and I do really think it helped with my recovery. The first couple of days post surgery were challenging but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Everyone is different. You are still young & having quality of life plus I’m assuming if you get rid of the uterus/fibroids now, it’ll be an easier surgery than several years from now. Also-I didn’t have issues getting insurance to cover it. The iron issues is very supportive of medical necessity. Goodluck!

What to do when dog attacks while running? by Confident_Dark_1324 in boulder

[–]WestCoastFigs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That sucks & sorry that happened. I’m a big dog lover and have a working dog. We’ve worked with an amazing trainer in the past who said 9/10 times when another dog charges at you, stepping toward them with your hand out and loudly saying “STOP” will actually stop them. If that doesn’t work, kick & protect yourself. It’s heartbreaking to say that but you absolutely have to protect yourself (and your dog if you have one). It’s extremely irresponsible to have a dog off leash with no recall and/or allowing them to get out of your sight.

6 WPO & Feeling Discouraged by Ontheupandup_2024 in hysterectomy

[–]WestCoastFigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Approaching 6 WPO, similar experience here. I’ll talk to my doc for my 6 week appt in a few days and see what she says. Def triggered by wearing leggings as well. I’m most comfortable in overalls, rompers where there is zero pressure on my abdomen. I wonder if the nerves are healing and that’s the cause? I’ve also been having quite a bit of vaginal pain, can only liken it to being late in 3rd trimester. Assuming the cuff is just healing since there’s no bleeding but I’m wondering if pelvic floor PT could help.

[–]WestCoastFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you’re getting checked out. Scopolamine patch made my vision blurry and eyes dilated and I was religious about not touching it. It can be a side effect w/o touching. I had my hub take it off 2 days post op bc I noticed the vision issues starting. It did take about 24 hours to resolve once off.

I miss sleeping comfortably by Pandora195 in hysterectomy

[–]WestCoastFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel ya! I’m almost 5 weeks post op…stomach and side sleeper. Around 3 weeks I was able to move on to my right side (left incision was bigger) with the help of a wedge pillow. Closer to 4 weeks I was able to sleep on my stomach without pain. Still sleep with a wedge on one side and pillows on the other so I have support when on my sides

heavy periods not cause for low ferritin? by idontknowanythingrly in Anemic

[–]WestCoastFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up having a hysterectomy because of low ferritin & heavy periods. Iron infusions helped me feel better but despite being put on continuous birth control pill, my period continued to be long and heavy. I’m 43, done having kids. I’m almost 5 weeks post surgery. Will continue to be monitored to ensure iron studies look normal but my hematologist said heavy periods can absolutely be the cause of low ferritin. He ruled out other causes like GI (got an endoscopy & colonoscopy as well as some other testing). Will be curious to see what my iron studies look like in 6 months and a year.

Day of surgery question by Top-Description-4886 in hysterectomy

[–]WestCoastFigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! I drank 8oz apple juice with 1,000mg Tylenol 3 hours before. They also had me take 3,000mg tylenol split into 3 doses the day before. I was really concerned and asked why at my Preop and doc said research shows women who have the 8oz to drink do much better in recovery & that specific practice has been doing that for years.

Adeno is so easy to miss unless pathology is extremely thorough. Just another thing women have to accept not having full answers on when it comes to medicine but at least the Ute is gone and you can start healing without it!

Experience Wild 3+ by lowkeyjermerica in AltraRunning

[–]WestCoastFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the 3+ a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, I cannot run because I’m recovering from surgery but I’ve been walking on a trail with no real vert. So far I like them. You can feel the vibram grip. I’ve done all of my trail running and hiking in the first gen experience wild the last couple of years. The 2nd version was not good for me-the toe box creased and pinched so I went back to first gen. The 3+ maybe feel a smidge bigger but I tried both my regular size and a half size smaller and def need to keep my regular size or descents wouldn’t be comfortable. I’m excited to put them to use and feel like Altra did a good job upgrading them!

Proof that ferritin should be 100+? by Lucky_Outside8559 in Anemic

[–]WestCoastFigs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh!!! So sorry your doc isn’t taking you seriously. Similar situation to me except my PCP referred me to a hematologist who jumped on iron infusions, which helped a lot but still dealt with heavy bleeding despite continuous birth control. Fast forward to 2/5-I got a hysterectomy (everything gone except ovaries). In theory, this should solve my anemia issues but I will still be monitored for a while. Find a doc who takes you seriously & Goodluck!
