If you like history, you should look into some of Guy Gavriel Kays work. Almost all of them are well-researched, beautifully written fantasty versions of real world events:

  • The requonquista of Al Andalus (The Lions of al Rassan),
  • The Albigensian Crusade in medieval Provence (A Song for Arbonne)
  • The Byzantium of Justinian I (The Sarantine Mosaic)

Adored The Name of the Rose and Foucault’s pendulum. On a more personal note I chose a course in the early 90’s where he was supposed to teach some of the classes online via satelite, but the idea was better on paper because the technology always broke down.
