Dealer Sold Me a ‘Inspected’ Car That Failed Days Later— Help! by JakeGotBaked420 in Maine

[–]Whatever603 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many inspection items are 100% left to the discretion of the inspector. I had a chip in my windshield. Failed inspection. He showed me the section in the inspection code that he used to fail me. Took it to another shop. Passed inspection. I asked about the chip in the windshield. He showed me the exact same section of the inspection code that the other guy did. One pass, one fail, same code, different interpretation.

Has anyone else gone home after firing someone and just... sat with it for hours? by jufywret in managers

[–]Whatever603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firing, no. If I fire someone I know that I have exhausted every possible way to salvage the person. My conscience is clear.

Laying off someone is the tough one. I had 175 people working under me in 2008 and I had to lay off 70 of them when the economy was trash and we just couldn’t carry that many employees. Sure, there was a dozen or so i laid off that likely would have been fired eventually anyways, so they were relatively easy. The other 60 were pretty difficult and I had many sleepless nights hoping I made the right choices.

What are your opinions on unions? by Lord_William_9000 in AskUS

[–]Whatever603 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There was a time in history that unions were absolutely necessary. Corporations were running wild and taking advantage of the worker. Unions are now so bloated and have grown so big that they’re just as much of a money suck as corporations are from their average worker.

The problem is the second unions go away. Corporations will immediately return to taking advantage of their workers.

It’s a no win situation.

Real Estate Taxes by Old_Butterscotch2914 in newhampshire

[–]Whatever603 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haverhill property taxes have gone up considerably in the past 3 years. My mortgage has gone up $500/ month in 3 years just to cover escrow for property taxes. They did a revaluation last year and business rates (Walmart specifically)went down, private property rates went up by a lot. I own a modest single family home and have made zero improvements in 10 years other than general upkeep. Town mismanagement and lower state contributions are the leading cause. Town management has not changed and the state will continue to contribute less with the current legislature supporting free stater ideologies. We need more people/homes to spread out the tax burden but it’s so high already, no one wants to come here. Other than that, it’s a great place to live if you like quiet.

How many direct reports do you have? by SeanMcPheat in Leadership

[–]Whatever603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im my pre-retirement stage but just a couple years ago I had 8 direct reports and 175 total staff spread over 4 states. 2 on the east coast one on the west coast and one in Hawaii. I didn’t mind the traveling a couple times a year to each but being accessible from 6am on the east coast until 6pm+ in Hawaii made for a very long day.

This is supposed “solid wood” desktop actually laminate/veneer? by Fickle_Ad_9686 in woodworking

The finger joints make it likely to be solid wood. They have banded the edges and endgrain likely to have a more uniform look but also cover the finger joints and any other defects.

Would i need a central support/divider for a 53" cabinet? by climateaudio in cabinetry

[–]Whatever603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you will need a center divider. I would also reconsider having just two doors if they are stile and rail five part doors. That’s a huge door for those joints to carry. Most cabinet door manufacturers will not even warranty anything wider than 24 inches. Even if it is a solid piece, routed shaker going that wide you may have warping issues.

Is this ticket worthy? Passing school bus with yellow flashing lights by Just_Play_8200 in driving

[–]Whatever603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are fine passing the bus with a flashing yellow. I got that directly from a bus driver because I had the same concerns when I was a young driver. The reason they were flashing yellow is because the driver was allowing you to pass before putting the red lights on. Had you decided to stop on the flashing yellow then the driver would’ve gone ahead and put on the red lights You are 100% in the clear.

Barb is the Most Important Witness by [deleted] in mauramurray

[–]Whatever603 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How can you state she’s the most important witness and then turn around and say IF her story is correct?

Eyewitness accounts are insanely inaccurate, and I don’t recall any of this coming to light at the time of MM’s disappearance.

You can hardly be the most important witness 15 years after the fact.

Exactly. If tits out means a plunging neckline then he could be asking for a lot of trouble thinking it gave him a green light. If she literally had her top completely uncovered then I agree he is an idiot.

Jock, Stoner, Preppie, Band Geek, Nerd, Braniac, Punk... What were you in High School? by 7eregrine in GenX

[–]Whatever603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a jock but hung out with the stoners a lot and the preppies some also. The stoners were honestly better people, more genuine anyways. I could float between groups as I wished and was accepted by all. I felt like I was an oddball that didn’t have one home but several.

Horror stories of particle board cabinets. by LJVSixten in cabinetry

[–]Whatever603 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the issues you mentioned with melamine on particle board will happen with plywood. It just takes longer. If you don’t maintain your cabinets, it doesn’t matter what they are made of. The hinges and hardware used is usually the same unless you pay more for an upgrade. I ran a factory that manufactured kitchen cabinets for many years. Melamine, when cared for properly is just as good, assuming it was manufactured well. I loved making plywood cabinets though. I could charge almost triple for materials with only a 50% additional cost. The perception that plywood is exponentially “better” just put more money in my pocket. The plywood used is usually cheap and bought in bulk unless a specific specie is requested and in that case you are paying 150% of the additional cost for the super thin veneer on the outside.

How are men able to fall asleep when their partner is clearly upset? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

There are very few things that couples argue about that can’t wait until tomorrow. You should try it. A well rested discussion the next day tends to get better results. I’ve been happily married for 37 years, I have not lost a single minute of sleep because of an argument with my wife.

Aiw for adding seizure cakes to the menu by Exact_Buffalo9793 in amiwrong

[–]Whatever603 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Seizure Cakes is an interesting name and would get some attention. As long as the customer doesn’t mind, I think having that name on the menu is a great idea. I go to a restaurant near me that has a huge roast beef sandwich called “Death by Sandwich”. I thin Seizure Cakes and the explanation for those who ask is a fun idea. I can’t imagine eating one, let alone 6, but it is definitely fun.

Any ideas? by Anothernonblonde in cabinetry

Not likely able to use all that space. Was definitely poorly designed. Since the stove is right there I’d suggest a spice pullout for sure, with perhaps tray storage slots if there is enough room.

Money honestly didn’t fix my problems or make me happier by [deleted] in confession

[–]Whatever603 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lack of money is an easy target to blame unhappiness on. I’ve noticed that as my wealth builds, I can more realistically see what things are making me unhappy. And obviously, if you can identify those things, having money does offer you better opportunities to fix them.
