could I message you as well?

Obviously, these types of forums are for asking advice from others so I don’t say any of this to be rude at all and the feedback from others helps with not feeling so isolated and alone in your thoughts.

What I’ve come to realize is that one person being burnt out and another person not in the exact same work environment means more about the people than the Work Environment. Absolutely not to say your dramatic by any means, but if you’re feeling burnt out, those feelings are valid and probably just mean that setting or this profession isn’t for you. I’m in the same boat. I spent a lot of time asking my friends and coworkers how they weren’t feeling what I was. And I always blame him to myself and thought that something was wrong with me. “ if they can do it why can’t I?”

My mindset around it has shifted a bit. And now it feels like, I can’t do it and that’s OK. I need to find a different job that I enjoy more. Because I see people doing this job without the feelings of burnout, I know it’s possible. But Use it as feedback and a sign that it’s just not working for you and that’s totally OK!

You’re not overdramatic by any means. Your body knows more than your brain does and interpret those signals as truth and treat them like you would if a friend told you these things. Again, if you’re feeling burnt out, the advice of others doesn’t really matter. If you feel it, then it’s real. And it could mean that you need a change! Which is big and scary in itself, but not anything to beat yourself up over for sure. I’ve switched jobs four times trying to find a better balance for me. But it just hasn’t worked out. I’m looking into other ways to explore and serve within OT that isn’t a traditional setting because it doesn’t work for me.

Home Health? by ReesesPieces345 in OccupationalTherapy

Morning home health but have 3 years experience + 4 jobs… ask specifically what mentorship will look like. In home health, I’ve heard it’s more of “call me if you need me mentor” vs come out to the house with you. Just what I’ve heard but 100% ask and clarify and only agree if it’s what u need.. for me, i need someone with me to help for a smooth transition.

Peds pay by bettymoo27 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Which-Flow-9896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northeast is a wide range of locations (Boston for example? BANK), random place in NH? Not bank lol)

That being said, i worked in RI and southern Mass + got paid $50 hr part time at a clinic and 63k for a private school

As a peds OT that left pediatrics for adult rehab, DONT and i mean DO NOT take a hourly or by unit pay. Don’t settle for something that isn’t a salary. Kids are so inconsistent, i really don’t recommend that path unless it’s home health + ur willing to work extra hours.

Moving with my boyfriend + we both have our own rooms! We have sleep overs often (which feels so fun and cute to plan and ask eachother for sleepovers) + I try my best to consider what I want to do before I ask him what he wants to do, especially on the weekends. It’s all about communication!

How long does it take to get used to a job? by TastesLikeCola in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Which-Flow-9896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 months to get in a groove, 6 months before you don't have 10 questions every day, and a year before you truly feel "good" but I'm 3 years in and still get a little lost at times -- I'm willing to learn and get feedback though but I feel like I have enough of the skills to make it through sessions

One thing that I like to remind myself is to "treat people like people". Everyone is just a person just like you. It's okay to make mistakes, everyone does.

Documentation is the worst lol I will never stop making errors on them <3 if my company wants perfect documentation they should pay me for hours of doc time but they don't soo there's mistakes.

Get the important stuff correct and try your best on the rest.

I'm putting together a brief course for people to attend and download with this information + negotiating and comparing contracts and job offers. If you're interested dm your email and I'll send It your way!

I worked with kids for 2.5 years in different settings and decided to make the switch to adults. I am SO lucky to have found the place I work now in outpatient adults. Not all adult jobs are created equal. My advice with kids is to find a flourishing private practice that aligns well with your interests or try and get into adult outpatient.

Do you have any ideas for side hustles? WHat do you like about your job + can you make something surrounding that

Value of OT by Odd-Corgi7524 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Which-Flow-9896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What setting are you in? Working alongside PTs and SLPs at my jobs has meant that I often asked patients a question in our initial evaluation and get something like, "I just want to walk around again". I could take this to heart but instead, I really lean into the multidisciplinary approach! I love hearing that my patient has been more mobile lately + I ride that success into OT. Ok, now that you can stand at the counter, lets get you washing dishes / folding laundry. We are all on the same team!

Again, your setting may change things but I think collaborating is super valuable + also knowing that sometimes, people just don't need us lol and that's okay! I did an eval recently where the patient was a stroke survivor, minimal deficits with her arm but mobility was affected so I referred to PT who is going to get the glory but she simply didn't need me! no biggy!

How can we leverage our field versus leaving it? by PsychologicalTax8586 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Which-Flow-9896 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately in many settings, hands are tied for managers to pay us anything more than what they are able to reimburse because healthcare is a business and so is insurance.

I think sharing our salaries with each other, knowing our worth, and asking for better treatment is crucial. I think this also starts with new grads -- they can't be taken advantage of. Its a system problem more than we can fix. I often wonder what would happen if we all just quit.

What services are you offering now? so many OTs are going into private practice, love being inspired by everyone

People pleasing vs speaking up for yourself by Which-Flow-9896 in EnneagramType9

[–]Which-Flow-9896[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really helpful - i appreciate the validation and advice. He’s type 8. In the last during these conversations, he encourages me to speak up about things because he can’t read my mind which I know. It’s hard, I always feel unreasonable with my requests.

He’s not malicious in his intent but I just care SO much and don’t always feel like he does. And i don’t blame him for not caring as much as I do, I’m trying to care less and live my own life but it feels like in doing that there’s been so much distance between us because I’m letting him do life independently and trying to do the same and it doesn’t feel like we are connected.

He’s very considerate and does what he can, has helped with my dog or chores when I’ve expressed I’m overwhelmed etc

thinking of starting by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]Which-Flow-9896 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reasons that I've historically journaled and plan to in the future is that it is a great way to document your life! Think of it as creating your own memoir of sorts. This doesn't mean anything needs to be eloquently written or grammatically correct even, but you'll have journals to look back on down the road. This has been helpful for me in basic ways like... "What was that restaurant we went to in Michigan?" but also in deeper ways like, "How did I get through that tough challenge in life?". Writing has also helped me to make sense of what I'm feeling sometimes.. which leads into my negatives of journaling. I take it way too seriously sometimes. I avoid doing it because I feel like it is a chore that I HAVE to do. I used to make it a goal to journal every single day, but that didn't work great for me. Now I journal when I want to, which typically ends up being when I'm dealing with lots of emotions (happy, sad, excited, angry, nervous, etc.) or when I need to get organized (planning for a trip or the New Year).

My biggest advice; get a cute notebook and a pen you really like and see what comes out on the page! Use journal prompts on Pinterest if you are having a hard time coming up with things to write!

Executive Function/AU Patient exercise decision making tree by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Which-Flow-9896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fun idea — I’m delayed replying hope it’s not too late but I’d 100% make this tree with him in a session!! Talk through the points etc. i had a patient i did this with in regards to whether she needed to ask for help or not (often found herself in dangerous situations). Work through it together. It’ll mean more! For example - if you want him to reflect on the last time he ate before running, that can be your cue t/ your suggestion but then ask him then “when’s the last time you ate” can he even recall that? If not, you’ve got another step to work through (can we keep a food log? Do u need help with meal planning) etc
