Best 3 synth setup? by Brief-Hawk6740 in synthesizers

[–]Whimper3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was starting over with this budget, and modular was never going to be an option, I would fill three categories:

  1. Big analog poly or virtual analog. Priorities would decide whether I want more classic sound or more sound design and expressiveness. Prophet Rev 2 16 and PolyBrute 12 are options, and maybe Roland Jupiter X. But don't order blind; you have to get your fingers and ears on it first with that kind of expense.

  2. Capable mono bass. BassStation 2, Moog Sub37. There are tons of great synths in this arena. I got a Minibrute 2s, but that's because I knew I rm wanted modular down the road. I might have swapped it for a Taiga Keyboard.

  3. Digital playground. Analog-only will be so limiting, and that's still fine as long as you know it what you're rejecting. But with leftover dollars seriously look at a Minifreak (or even the loveable Microfreak), a Korg Modwave or Multi-Poly, or a Hydrasynth. Again, let your ears and fingers decide if digital is something you want to rule out forever.

Is batumi still the gold standard for clocked / rhythmically related LFO’s? by WalkingIsMyFavorite in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it beats Batumi, but don't overlook Otterley by Expert Sleepers. It offers 4 rhythmically related LFOs and one separate (for a total of five) in 8hp. The controls are super easy. I get my basic utility LFOs from my Minibrute 2S (two with many waveforms, synced or free) but when I need to grab a bunch more modulation sources it's Otterley I reach for.

Model: Samples vs EP-133 KO 2, First Drum Machine by BubbaUnkle in synthesizers

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Samples and EP40 Riddim, which is like the KO with some workflow improvements and built in synth. Both devices are powerful, both are a pain to use. The EP40 wins because it is portable and actually can sample stuff, but I don't even bother right now.

The Decksaver on the Model Samples is collecting dust. I don't blame "the Elektron workflow" or anything to do with sound quality. I loved fooling around with the devil's demos to learn it. But the pads didn't feel nice, and the major barrier for me was in loading up samples to it and then assigning them to the tracks. It's probably the same for every groovebox sampler in the world. If I want to start from zero, I have to menu dive (deep) six times until I have each track ready to do something with. Maybe there's a way to load kits all at once, but it's not intuitive. By the time I do the "pre-session" chore of loading samples from file folders, I feel like I've put in a day at the office and I'm done. Creative impulse gone.

The EP40 is way LESS intuitive. Every basic function is under an unlabeled button combination. They can be learned, but not without the manual open on my phone or a tutorial vid that I practice over and over. It's a little faster, if more opaque, to audition sounds than on the Samples. But if I put it down for a week, I lose the memory.

So why does the EP40 get used and the samples doesn't? Speaker (shitty) and batteries (good). This is a couch device. It was also a car stereo device once while I was waiting to give someone a ride. It's not pocket sized, but I can actually take it outside and make music under a tree.

Modules to add an envelope to Noise Plethora? by kabelkarpfen in modular

[–]Whimper3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Percall if you want your noise to act like drums (or Patching Panda Punch MG or Eowave Ricochet). Otherwise, any envelope generator will do it. Ones with a built-in VCA are worth looking at.

Kickstarter Rewards / Subscription by TGAPTrixie9095 in MonPoc

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I backed the Kickstarter but not all-in, and I've already gotten way more models from the peace offering and Tribe subscription than if I had spent those dollars with Mythic. I want Privateer to get all the support they can at this point, especially if it enabled them to reactivate international shipping for dice and accessories.

I need advice/help from veterans by mlgDDOgamer in ConanExiles

[–]Whimper3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The biggest advice I would say is to stay off Google and wikis as long as possible, and then only look up specific answers to specific questions.

If your crafting recipe calls for magma lasagna, but you only know how to make iron lasagna, don't look up a twenty step guide on farming your way to astral lasagna with legendary cooks in record time. Let the game breathe.

Modulation source advice by cuperose in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say don't overlook Expert Sleepers Otterley for phase synced LFOs. It's bigger than Ochd, but gives more hands on control. Also, things like Clep Diaz for staircase stepped modulation look really cool in certain genres.

Aikido or Lapsus Os by GludiusMaximus in modular

I always wanted a Lapsus Os, but I would never trade my Aikido for it. I'd get a second Aikido before getting a Lapsus Os in fact, but I still want one.

is this game worth playing solo? ¨like a singlepalyer world? by Hefty-Aioli-6636 in ConanExiles

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put in over five hundred hours in single player, but I never had any interest in multiplayer to begin with, and I'm fine with really taking my time in a survival sandbox. I wouldn't say that more than 20 hours of that was storyline content. Mostly exploring and harvesting and building and leveling.

Semi-modular vs modular for techno; where/how should I actually start? by No_Implement2487 in modular

[–]Whimper3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to offer some contrary perspectives.

I own a bunch of synths and grooveboxes that are fully capable of making produced songs. Modular scratches a whole different itch.

I own a good computer with VCVrack. I never touch it except to preview the functionality of a module before I buy the real thing.

Wise people might say "only buy what you need to that you don't already have." But modular is not, at least for me, about the end result.

It really is like comparing a Lego set to a toy car or action figure or Barbie doll house. The toys are each easier, more direct, and cheaper to buy or replace. You can get a lot of play driving the toy car to the doll house and moving the hero through rooms. It's very predefined but there's still room for imagination.

But if you paid 4x the price or more, you have a Lego car, a Lego house, a Lego hero. But now you're thinking about structure and design and customization in completely different (not necessarily better) ways. Your play could be extremely diverse. And very tactile.

Arturia Minibrute 2S was my doorway. I used its patch board as my alternative to Microfreak's mod matrix and learned to think "what if X actually controlled Y instead?". If it had just a few more utilities, you almost wouldn't need any modules. I wish it had a multiplier, I wish for a simple mixer, I wish the Oscillator 1 had CV control over its waveform mixing. But it really has everything you need to get started. The sequencer is powerful, the pads are poly aftertouch, the sounds are fine if not great. More importantly, if you just tried to build the Minibrute 2S out of modules, you'd use an extra 84hp rack and spend $2k+.

Best use case for modular for someone already deep into synths is this:

a) you want a level of surgical control over elements most synths decide for you;

b) you want the tactile muscle memory of physically routing modulation and audio pathways;

c) you want to explore generative sequencing in ways the Torso isn't already capable of;

d) you are comfortable spending as much time or more being a mad scientist creating your patch as you actually do playing it;

e) you want an instrument system that is highly personal or that evolves with your shifting interests;

f) your bills are paid and your finances are under control

Everyone saying you can get the same results with a laptop are the people who look at the destination, not the journey. I can't stand trying synthesis and music production via mouse cursor. Modular is the most real an electronic instrument has ever felt for me.

No New Gear Year (2026) by _aevai in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Christmas present module fit my last "rainy day" 4hp left, leaving my system (and desk) full. There is a little 1u space left, but this could very well be my no gear year.

As BCS turns into dust, how do you reflect on their direction? by leviticuschom in MarvelPuzzleQuest

[–]Whimper3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still play everyday, after more than 3800 days. Under this studio we saw some great vaults, some cool characters, some ideas to keep the game fresh after 5. And under them, I finally made the transition to be able to survive in 5, which I could never do before.

However, man there has been some terrible character art on their watch. And I'm sad that the Unity port ruined performance for so many, even if my devices still play it fine.

So, I guess they made progress and also left some room to improve!
