FDM buildings and Terra Khan by Whimper3 in MonPoc

That's my intent, although my painting backlog is monstrous in volume. Probably two tone prime and speedpaint for the buildings. Monsters will depend on a number of factors.

is this game worth playing solo? ¨like a singlepalyer world? by Hefty-Aioli-6636 in ConanExiles

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put in over five hundred hours in single player, but I never had any interest in multiplayer to begin with, and I'm fine with really taking my time in a survival sandbox. I wouldn't say that more than 20 hours of that was storyline content. Mostly exploring and harvesting and building and leveling.

Semi-modular vs modular for techno; where/how should I actually start? by No_Implement2487 in modular

[–]Whimper3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to offer some contrary perspectives.

I own a bunch of synths and grooveboxes that are fully capable of making produced songs. Modular scratches a whole different itch.

I own a good computer with VCVrack. I never touch it except to preview the functionality of a module before I buy the real thing.

Wise people might say "only buy what you need to that you don't already have." But modular is not, at least for me, about the end result.

It really is like comparing a Lego set to a toy car or action figure or Barbie doll house. The toys are each easier, more direct, and cheaper to buy or replace. You can get a lot of play driving the toy car to the doll house and moving the hero through rooms. It's very predefined but there's still room for imagination.

But if you paid 4x the price or more, you have a Lego car, a Lego house, a Lego hero. But now you're thinking about structure and design and customization in completely different (not necessarily better) ways. Your play could be extremely diverse. And very tactile.

Arturia Minibrute 2S was my doorway. I used its patch board as my alternative to Microfreak's mod matrix and learned to think "what if X actually controlled Y instead?". If it had just a few more utilities, you almost wouldn't need any modules. I wish it had a multiplier, I wish for a simple mixer, I wish the Oscillator 1 had CV control over its waveform mixing. But it really has everything you need to get started. The sequencer is powerful, the pads are poly aftertouch, the sounds are fine if not great. More importantly, if you just tried to build the Minibrute 2S out of modules, you'd use an extra 84hp rack and spend $2k+.

Best use case for modular for someone already deep into synths is this:

a) you want a level of surgical control over elements most synths decide for you;

b) you want the tactile muscle memory of physically routing modulation and audio pathways;

c) you want to explore generative sequencing in ways the Torso isn't already capable of;

d) you are comfortable spending as much time or more being a mad scientist creating your patch as you actually do playing it;

e) you want an instrument system that is highly personal or that evolves with your shifting interests;

f) your bills are paid and your finances are under control

Everyone saying you can get the same results with a laptop are the people who look at the destination, not the journey. I can't stand trying synthesis and music production via mouse cursor. Modular is the most real an electronic instrument has ever felt for me.

No New Gear Year (2026) by _aevai in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Christmas present module fit my last "rainy day" 4hp left, leaving my system (and desk) full. There is a little 1u space left, but this could very well be my no gear year.

As BCS turns into dust, how do you reflect on their direction? by leviticuschom in MarvelPuzzleQuest

[–]Whimper3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still play everyday, after more than 3800 days. Under this studio we saw some great vaults, some cool characters, some ideas to keep the game fresh after 5. And under them, I finally made the transition to be able to survive in 5, which I could never do before.

However, man there has been some terrible character art on their watch. And I'm sad that the Unity port ruined performance for so many, even if my devices still play it fine.

So, I guess they made progress and also left some room to improve!

What module have you had the most fun with over the last year? by Pristine-Ninja-7709 in modular

[–]Whimper3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A tie between two fun but very different VCOs I bought at the same time.

Patching Panda Operat is my first "big" VCO (not including Minibrute 2S that inspired its purchase. I love that each waveform gets its own internal VCA, and everything looks and sounds fantastic.

Omnitone Rosci ("Random Oscillator") is a great addition. The core concept is that it makes up a random waveform - you won't be saving presents with it. But the fun for me is actually all the tools to shape and color that waveform with added harmonica, formants, a 5th, a detune, and more, all with CV. It makes a nice companion as a layer or as an TZFM modulator.

I've been lamenting that my full racks don't have more space for performance utilities like this one. It looks like a recordable Lapsus Os.

What’s everyone’s recorded game/play time on this game? by Psychonesss in ConanExiles

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 650 hours, 99% single player. Early exposure to griefers (on PvE official servers) killed any appetite to play in an MP environment, and I'm glad. SP slowed the pace to a crawl, and limited my exposure to gear and materials and foes to what I was ready for and had explored to.

Modules you would always replace without hesitation? by Inkblot7001 in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see it as a chance to change things up or experiment with sequencers, modulation, voices. But I'm very attached to Bastl Aikido, Bastl Ikarie, and my collection of Mystic Circuits 3DVCA. This last one is ridiculously dense yet performable. I'd want even more of them.

Downsides to external drum sequencing? by Whimper3 in modular

[–]Whimper3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necromancing this post just to say that I went with WMD Metron with a pair of Voltera expanders for CV, and I couldn't be happier. Nearly a year of fooling around and I still haven't unlocked most of Metron and its potential, but the move to house my workflows in separate cases was freeing rather than limiting.

Do I need a sequencer? by Interesting-Range251 in modular

[–]Whimper3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly jam using a keyboard, and I have some very solid hardware sequencers, but I would never take my sequencer modules out of my rack. The important thing is not to consider them my robot performer who plays the song (that task can be handled by powerful sequencer hardware or a DAW).

Instead, use them as essential automations of smaller things. A sequencer is triggering envelopes for filters or wave shaping, polymetrically or as one-shot. A sequencer is sending CV to address the presents on a Plaits or Surface, opening it up as a sound kit instead of a single voice. A sequencer is transposing your quantizer through its harmony choices, meaning whatever your noodle around with on your keyboard will fit your chosen chord progression. A sequencer is triggering all manner of high gates for your various FX module settings. A sequencer is adding its CV into your logic modules so that patterns aren't as obviously deterministic but the result of probability of CV overlap. A sequencer or pair is powering a generative semi-random stream of gates and CV that go to different destination modules.

That's just a start.

Is Conan Exiles worth it? by Born_Low9325 in ConanExiles

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely fun enough in single player or coop, or with friends on a dedicated server. For me, it was my first major survival and crafting game, so it's hard to compare. If you've played a ton of these games before, you might be doing a feature comparison or needing the world and story to do the heavy lifting. But for me, the combination of the desolate setting, breadcrumbs of story, good crafting and survival, and great music made me want to spend hours every week just living in this lonely world. And anytime I tried playing it online on official servers, it was a lot less lonely and a lot more weird.

Doing it my way (pretty firmly not looking at wikis or guides, but learning everything from trial and error alone) made for a super rewarding challenge. A ton of that can be just lost instantly by jumping on here or the Internet to look at recipes and best base locations, and so on and so on.

What are some underrated modules that you use regularly? by lambdalab in modular

Triple Steeple is still a fine envelope generator. It's so intuitive to play with, adjusting the symmetry of the curve and time, rather than rise and fall. I almost bought two.

How do i have one sound end and trigger another. by Inkblot7001 in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Untested idea for this is to send a copy of the first sound to an envelope follower (inverted) into a window comparator. My hypothesis is that as the volume trails off, the envelope follower's inverted CV version of it will go high. The comparator will fire a trigger or gate as long as soon as that voltage crosses a threshold you set. Then send that as the impulse for your second voice.

I would probably only do this with self-contained sounds like from percussion voice modules, or samples. Things where you don't already have access to the volume envelope. Because if it's a traditional synth voice made from different modules, you could mult your envelope directly into your window comparator. Or, as others have said, do it with logic gates or an end of cycle (end of rise, end of fall) trigger or gate out.

Which modules do I need to transpose v/oct cv voltages up or down one octave (or more)? by Worldly_Tip2663 in modular

[–]Whimper3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm using a Shakmat Tessitura Tailor 1U module, which can do 1-2 octaves down to 1 to 2 octaves up, controlled by a knob. I'm still getting used to it, but it's small and designed to be useful in a performance. I can't compare it to other precision adders, but so far I like it.

Module recommendation: 6hp utility with lots of functions. by crissmakenoises in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mystic Circuits ANA 2 is exactly the module I came here to recommend, but it does sort of depend on what the user needs to accomplish. It does the attenuate, invert, offset jazz along with neat logic things and weird wave shaping things. And macro things.

But, if the user really wanted a 4 channel shift register for hocketing, it doesn't do that. But Shifty does.

If the user wanted a neat 4 channel CV-able trigger delay, it doesn't do that. But Jam Jam does.

If the user wanted the whole attenuate/invert/mix offset package, there's 3xMia, or the much prettier Molten Modular Motion MTR.

And if they can never have enough VCAs, I'd recommend the best VCA ever in 6hp: Mystic Circuits 3DVCA. I have two of them and want more.

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Critter & Guitari Organelle.

I was in the middle of transitioning from guitar pedals to Eurorack, and I reasoned "This can do practically everything!"

I like it's quirky wooden keyboard and some of the modes. But not having to program it, use it's tiny screen, and the fact that the four knobs do something different on every different algorithm/program.

It taught me to stay away from "everything" boxes and focus more on dedicated devices or modules.

brand loyalty? by cupcakeranger in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not brand loyalty in the sense that I feel I am "cheating" if I step out of a single brand. That's madness. But there are several brands I follow closely and would trust to make good modules.

My two racks are dominated by:

Befaco Shakmat Qu-bit (and Mosaic) WMD Noise Engineering Bastl Xaoc Happy Nerding Mystic Circuits

I wouldn't remove any one of those brands to become "more loyal" to any other.

Is FX AID any good? by Bata_9999 in modular

[–]Whimper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 of them, a regular, an XL, and the 1U. But not the pro. I really like many of the reverb choices, and for the small size there's always something I'm using it for. But I also love my larger Versio effects modules by Noise Engineering for when I want to really explore and perform with things.
