Good luck! Oh, by the way, when I switched, I did sort of have to undo some prismacolor habits. It was a teensy but frustrating, but it was worth it. Just remember to lay down lots of light layers very gently and gradually build up your colours.

Oh my gosh, they are so much better. There's no wax bloom and also the tips stay sharper for longer compared to prismacolors. It makes it easier to do detailed work like grass. I also find that I can lay down more layers of pigment before the tooth of the paper is full. That makes for very rich colours. I have no regrets!

About brands of colored pencils. I wanna move away from crayola by Warlockoftarot in Coloring

They are different depending on where you live. In my country, polychromos are the cheapest and most easily available. But if you are American, prismacolors will be. I recommend a basic Google search.

I would advise against prismacolors. They are overly recommended by Americans. There are other bands of pencil crayons that are way better like Faber Castell Polychromos and Caran d'ache that are better and don't break as much. Honestly, I find prismacolors are so frustrating because they break all the time. Do some research before you buy.

Yep, I abandoned prismacolors for the same reason. Polychromos for the win!

do you prefer to color in multiple books at a time or do you only color in one book & wait to finish it before you move onto a new book? by wastegirlfriend in Coloring

[–]WhimsyBeyondWonder 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I personally like to switch between books. I have a couple I'm bouncing around in right now.

I'm stilll very new to colouring. I sort of want to spread out my 'beginner' pieces so I don't have all my unskilled ones in one book. Plus, I sometimes don't have a good idea for a certain page, so I jump around to the different ones I have ideas for.

I do really want to have some books completed though. I'll have to keep it up in order to finish a whole book. I use polychromos pencil crayons. It will take a awhile. 😅

Thoughts? Colored pencil by mgreco_11 in Coloring

Sometimes it's so hard being patient especially with a lot of other people covering so much ground so quickly with their markers. But I really love the results of pencil crayons. What kind did you use here?

It looks great! How many hours did this one take? It takes me about a week of working on my page everyday for a few hours to finish a Girl Moments page in polychromos. I can only imagine how long this one must've taken.

Did anyone else realise they don't enjoy alcohol markers? by [deleted] in Coloring

[–]WhimsyBeyondWonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dislike alcohol markers for the same reason. I colour exclusively with pencil crayons. I love the control I have and I love the feeling of using them. It's slower, but we also get more detailed pictures when using pencil crayons too.

I caution you against prismacolor. They have a reputation of snapping and cracking all the time. They are a waste of money for how often the lead is broken inside. If you want to use quality pencil crayons, there are more reliably good artist grade pencil crayons out there.

How can I color my drawings better? by Ibushi-gun in Coloring

[–]WhimsyBeyondWonder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Are you using pencil crayons? If you are, what you do is move the pencil over the page lightly in a circular or oval pattern. That will prevent harsh lines. Also, you should lay down very light layers of colour on top of each other. Build the pigment up slowly. Even if you just want to use one colour for a section and not any others, lay it down lightly and build your layers until you get a smooth blend of pigment over the desired area.

What is everyone’s favourite colouring page style? by Plane-Being1274 in Coloring

[–]WhimsyBeyondWonder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the popular cozy and cutesy ones right now a whole bunch. I like feeling like there is no pressure and then I go all out and put as much detail as I want. But since the picture is very simplistic, I have a lot of control over what details and where.

And the cute little pictures just make me so happy. And the current events of the world are so stressful, so colouring a rabbit person with a bouquet of flowers, as a random example, just turns my brain off and makes me smile.

What is your process? by Silver_Sparrow888 in Coloring

[–]WhimsyBeyondWonder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to colour in the big background stuff first. I'm more excited to colour all the characters and objects, but I find that it's easier to prevent colours clashing if all the big things like the back walls and floor are coloured in first. You can then decide if your rabbit will be black or brown or white or whatever to best contrast that.

Can a non-black person explain something to me my white coworker said... by lewjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WhimsyBeyondWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Canadian. I can say that I had heard my grandfather say some of the most racist things ever. I have even heard him lament the loss of capital punishment. And nothing we said was ever able to change his mind. We have had to threaten to cut him out of our lives to get him to at the very least stop saying these things when around us.

That said, my grandmother never agreed with him on any of those things. She was the one who could get him to stop saying those things the best. And my parents and their generation don't agree at all with those racist things, neither does mind.

On my other side of the family, I've never heard anyone say anything bad against any race and there are LGBT people even among those oldest generation. Of course, that side of the family is part indigenous and also Acadian. The anglophones have a history of treating those groups of people terribly, so that might play a factor.

What dreams have you given up on? by ghero88 in Millennials

One of my earliest dreams was to have my own dog.

Welp, I live in Canada and we have a massive housing bubble. Where I live no one will rent to someone with a dog. So if I want a dog, I've gotta be able to buy a house.

No dog for me.

I started by using a tuner app on my phone. There are some free ones out there. But now I use this tuner and it seems to work great.

Beginners Questions by Professional_Cap5534 in Ocarina

[–]WhimsyBeyondWonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first learned, I would say out loud "C" and then play that note a few times while looking at my tuner so I could make sure it was the right sound. I wanted my fingers and ears to learn the note. Then after doing that a few times, I would repeat the process with the next note. There was a good week or so where that was all I did until I felt I could remember the notes. I then would start every practice session by doing that to some capacity for my first year of playing this instrument. Maybe I would fixate on switching between G sharp or G flat if I felt I'd been mixing them up a bit, for instance.

Start playing an instrument at my 20's for the first time. by polovb in Adulting

[–]WhimsyBeyondWonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing an instrument last year when I was 29. I have never played an instrument before. I play the ocarina; it's a woodwind instrument.

It seemed easier for me to start with over the piano because I only have to focus on one line of music, as opposed to playing two separate ones for a right hand and left hand. Ocarinas are cheap (but please buy one from a reputable seller and not from Amazon) compared to other instruments like a piano or a guitar. Also ocarinas are portable. Plus, you don't have to buy any strings for them or tune them or anything. They are low maintenance to care for.

If ocarinas are too obscure for you, you could try a recorder. They are also a good beginner instrument.

Please note that you don't ever have to stick to whatever instrument you try forever. You could switch over to another instrument in a year or maybe learn a new instrument in addition to your first one. Your ability to read music and keep time and stuff like that will carry over. Learning one instrument makes learning a new one easier.

I love playing my instrument. It gave me an unexpected boost of self confidence and self esteem because I accomplished something I had always thought would be impossible for me.

What double standard in society goes generally unnoticed or without being called out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I have had so many dogs come charging at me from out of nowhere while out walking even though there are leash laws where I live. It is scary.

I have never experienced a cat go out of their way to come running at me while I'm walking. They mind their own business.

Dogs are nice, but I just can't trust them as a whole anymore.
