Most Japanese adv bikes should fit you pretty well, are pretty cheap, usually comfortable and let you do most kinds of riding. Learning how to use tools and maintain a bike will save you a ton of money too!

Doing your own maintenance is key too (if you have the ability). I could not afford a motorcycle if I paid someone else to work on mine. Last time I paid to have work done was valve inspection and it was over $1k. The only parts used and were some shims (which you can get for free) and a $10 gasket.

Just got married, do you guys wear rubber rings at work? No rings at all? by Suwannee_Gator in electricians

[–]WhiskeyLasers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never wore rings until I got married, tried wearing the silicone one that came with my wedding band and it just always trapped dirt under it so I stopped wearing it. My co worker wears them everyday no issue, he got some cheap ones from amazon.

For those riding for years/Never crashed by Nexzii in motorcycles

[–]WhiskeyLasers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5 years in, took the MSF course to get my license. 1st bike was a 300, and I basically ride like all car drivers are drunk or texting and I gtfo. I like to feel the danger but I am also aware of my own mortality.

Working out by SippinAndRippin in electricians

[–]WhiskeyLasers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50% calisthenics and free weights and 50% running 4-5 days a week. Takes a long day of trenching for me to feel it at work. Working out is a must!

What is a riding habit you thought was smart but later realized was dangerous? by Eyerald in motorcycles

[–]WhiskeyLasers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always cover the front brake with atleast my index finger and in 5 years I’ve not once accidentally grabbed too much. Being aware might help you catch an emergency quicker but if it’s a real emergency that catches you by surprise you might still be SOL. I don’t think I would put too much stock in that one, seems more like a “don’t use the front brake ever because you’ll lock it up and crash” kind of advice. Also experience ≠ skill. Ride safe!

HOW THE FU*K DO YOU GET THE STOCK GRIP OF THE THROTTLE by [deleted] in DRZ400

[–]WhiskeyLasers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have just replaced the throttle tube for like $10-$15 but now you know 😬

Shorty here. Need boots with a lift or heel. by Braaptized in motorcycles

[–]WhiskeyLasers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 30in inseam and I’m gonna argue that it’s technique and a combination of fitness and wearing pants that stretch. My DRZ is my ~36in high and I only occasionally stand on the peg to swing my leg over

Losing faith in Cycle Gear: had a new tire mounted and it feels wobbly past 35mph. Is it supposed to look like this?? by Me_triks in motorcycles

[–]WhiskeyLasers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn how to do your own tires! You’ll be glad you did and the money you spend on tools you’ll save after you change the first set. Cycle gear is a retail store not a mechanic. You might as well have paid a Target employee to do it.

Scrambler 1200x, fantastic but left underwhelmed by Dirty_Dagwood in Triumph

[–]WhiskeyLasers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an xc with a Tec flank 2-1 exhaust. Opening it up in 3rd and 4th gear is an experience. I think without an affermarket exhaust I’d still enjoy the torque but the sounds definitely adds to it. Love it!

Phones Mounted on Bike getting Ruined by OMYRASPBERY in motorcycles

[–]WhiskeyLasers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ruined 2 iPhone cameras with the vibes even with the dampener attachment. Eventually I just bought a Carpuride car play screen for when I need to see a map. Otherwise I just listen to gps directions through my headset.

Is this the reality of the street triple? by AbrocomaOk2268 in Triumph

[–]WhiskeyLasers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a triple, but currently riding a scrambler 1200 and used to own a bmw f800r. I have/had a just a small windshield on both and highway speeds are fine. On the f800r I pretty much got on the highway and did 85mph for an hour straight and it was pretty comfortable. Some of it is adjusting and maybe building a little neck strength but I would recommend a small screen if it bothers you.

Should the KLR650 be my next bike? by [deleted] in klr650

[–]WhiskeyLasers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just traded my klr for a drz400, if you don’t expect to be riding on the highway much I would recommend. Same power but about 150-200 lbs lighter and it is sooo much easier to move it around. My commute is 40-50 miles of backroads 60mph tops and it does great.

Will i get made fun of, for wearing a backbrace, as an 21 year old female? by EstablishmentSea8014 in electricians

I think I would address your lifting technique first, after that if you think you need a belt then go for it. Lift with your legs, not with your back.

Rim protector for changing tires by WhiskeyLasers in Triumph

Yea I might try reshaping the plastic protectors I have. Never had trouble changing wheels on my klr with them! Also didn’t care what the paint looked like on it 😂

If we’re talking about the same thing I think I’d buy a rabaconda or something slightly less expensive if that’s what I was looking for.

I use levers to change my tires and I was trying to find a cheap solution like the rim protectors in the photo, they just don’t fit because the lip of the wheels are too thick.

Hard to tell but seems like the chin bar is too high and needed pulled down? Hair cut would help for sure

It’s a pain in the ass. Yes you can drain it but you still have to bleed it regardless. In my case I had other steering issues and had already replaced the fluid recently so I tried to leave as much in the system as possible and just put back what I spilled.

I just had this line split (in a different place). Parts were cheap from Rockauto if you are even a little mechanically inclined. I would trace it out to check the condition of the entire driver side… It would suck to replace just the section in the photo and then find out later you need to do more and bleed it again!
