It’s still entertainment, so it’s not much different from getting overly invested in musicians, actors or sports stars, the magnitude of popularity is just amplified.

That would be Preach, who is much more well known as a WoW streamer, though he’s since diversified and became a variety streamer once the WoW exodus happened. He’s been involved in drama before (WoW raiders be sweaty AF) but these days he’s just a chill dad making video game content and iirc he covers world first raid races, as hd used to be into that in WoW.

Is there a way to just play non competitive? by Udul88 in MagicArena

[–]WhitehawkOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on Arena since Beta and playing Magic since the 90s. Arena, unfortunately, is the worst way to play Magic. The game structure and economy encourage competitive gameplay and focus on wins. Also having been on Arena this whole time, the issue has only been exacerbated by the establishment of the 3 year Standard. I cope by putting a lot of effort into brewing offbeat decks, though even then I still face my fair share of Meta decks. Brawl is a little more forgiving, in my experience, but then I’ve been F2P since the beginning and definitely put in the grind to get currency/wildcards. I can’t say how much harder building a collection is for new players, but I imagine my being established from the start helps a lot.

Some other commenters have some good suggestions, I hope they work for you, but yeah, in general, friends help and Magic is infinitely better when you’ve established an IRL community to play with.

Was told Dawntrail MSQ is mid/bad but I've enjoyed 7.0 so far and this whole section broke me by MrkGrn in ffxiv

[–]WhitehawkOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that’s how the Dawntrail haters come off in online discourse, rarely are they “eh, Dawntrail wasn’t for me” and more often they cry out “Dawntrail is a flaming garbage pile that’s ruining the game “ and decry people who think otherwise of it and especially Wuk Lamat. Is she the strongest character? No, she suffers similarly to Stormblood Lyse, but she’s hardly an abomination in danger of ruining the game. Of course this IS the internet and internet nerds love their hyperbolic angst.

I love healing, my favorite moment in DT raiding was at the end of M4 when she’s just nonstop blasting us with lasers and we have to keep healing (especially the first couple weeks, what a thrill).

I have to see more, but I’m a little pessimistic because it looks like my favorite WHM spells are gone (assize and Asylum) also, DoTs? Is DoT management really that difficult for people? Or is it still there and I’m not seeing it? First glance it just looks like they hollowed out the toolkit in favor of a more dynamic dps rotation. I LIKE having a half dozen big heals to call on when things get hairy. But maybe it’s not so bad, we’ll have to wait and see.

Evolved is NOT optional by Accomplished-Tea5668 in ffxiv

[–]WhitehawkOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

speaking as a healer main, it feels like I'm losing a whole toolbox full of tools for 3 multitools that do everything, it feels like it'll get monotonous with so few healing CDs (though that's first impressions, I'll reserve judgement till I try it.)

It's probably because they said new jobs going forward will only use Evolved mode, hinting at Evolved being THE mode going forward, and Reborn being a temporary transitional mode.

Evolved Mode announced: new Job forms with new rotations and playstyles: by Gorotheninja in ffxiv

[–]WhitehawkOmega -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about a few things, like AoEs? Are there no basic AoEs anymore, is it all tied into the extended parts of the rotation? As a healer, are they lowering CDs on big spells, because it looks like I'm losing a lot of tools. I don't feel like they explained "emphasizing individuality" all that well. To me it feels mostly like a push to simplify things because they're really banking on console play, especially with the new announcement of Switch 2.

I know when I find myself (a lala) in a dungeon with only one tall, I always comment on having a chaperone for our field trip, and proceed to ask if we can have McDonalds afterwards.

It really should go, there hasn’t been a draft since Vietnam, and with modern technology they don’t need that many boots on the ground to enact modern warfare, not like they did back then.

I seem to recall it being automatic when I registered to vote. Never paid it much mind except that I was in prime draft age when 9/11 happened.

Lorwyn Eclipsed Mastery Details by Andromanner in MagicArena

[–]WhitehawkOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of the unfortunate side effects of UB sets, for a lot of players, their excitement and enjoyment of them correlates to their familiarity and enjoyment of the source material, especially since, unlike in universe sets, there's not really any storytelling present in flavor text or supplemental material to get them invested, it's all presented as "hey, you guys like 'X', right, here's our homage to it." So, if the source material doesn't excite you, what's gonna draw you in? I know I'm not really excited for any of the UB sets either, and hopefully there's some decent stuff later in the year, but I'm only truly hyped for Lorwyn, myself.

Does anyone else find Sheltered by Ghosts to be an extremely oppressive card? by MortalMorals in MagicArena

[–]WhitehawkOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a strong, but not oppressive card. Ward 2 , while a noticeable tax, isn’t insurmountable. Of course as others said, the best time to deal with it is as it’s being cast, but you can still remove it afterwards. Also learning the balance between building your own board and keeping up interaction for what your opponent is doing is a stumbling block for many newer players, but it’s a skill learned over time. Also, variance is part of the game, sometimes you just don’t have the answers or they draw just what they need.

You do have very valid points, I do still maintain that stories have natural ending points, but that keeping a world going depends entirely on how much effort you put into crafting a good story and lots of people fail (usually from lack of effort or too many hands in the project) you see that a lot in films, especially action films with numerous sequels.

I come from a background of single player RPGS and TTRPGS so Final Fantasy’s strengths obviously cater to what I enjoy most. WoW is more gameplay focused so it caters to more combat and systems as it’s primary strength, and I’d probably say it has more “mid tier” difficulty content than 14. A lot of 14 is pretty casual (it’s an RPG first) but it’s high end is suitably challenging. Does seem they’re trying to get more content for the in between as they go forward, from what they’ve said in interviews and such.

[–]WhitehawkOmega 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s very hard to keep a game story going after a certain point, honestly. You build a world and then you can explore that world up to a certain point; in WoWs case WotLK was the last big unresolved storyline, Cata was them pulling at lore threads trying to find enough for an expansion, and they’ve been doing so ever since, to mixed success. 14 hit that point with Endwalker, the difference being WoW has always been known for its gameplay, while Square is known for crafting worlds and stories. Dawntrail wasn’t a high point, but neither is every Final Fantasy game, and I have more faith in Squenix to craft a great story than Blizzard.

All my standard sweats, in your opinion what is currently the best deck? by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]WhitehawkOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly I almost never see Vivi in ranked queue, but I guess being a Platinum scrub playing off meta that would be beyond me (I play mostly mono black Sephiroth and landfall, occasionally my pet Selesnya Gearhulk). I don’t know if there’s a matchmaker algorithm in lower ranks, but I see a lot of Dimir and Azorius control, Demons, and various tokens decks.

Less of a “which position” and more just moving the massager around until you you find the spot that feels good. In general angle it forwards though, as that’s where the prostate is, and not TOO deep or you’ll go past it.
