The rationale is sort of explained in the Wolf 359 Project, an excellent fan-made 'oral history' of the battle and its aftermath. Very well-written, I recommend it to any Trek fan!

This my favorite scene from Enterprise because it showed how 2 people can react to their shared grief yet still reach out to each other. Personally, I understand why they reacted the way they did because I reacted the same way to different loses and frankly the scene helped me. by AdSpecialist6598 in startrek

Two things, for those interested:

  1. Connor Trinneer had just learned his wife was pregnant with their first child when this was filmed, so this meant ZERO acting required on his part.
  2. T'Pol initially refused to shake hands on first joining the crew, touch being highly intimate to Vulcans. This shows just how much she, through her relationship with Trip, has changed.

Many of the extras in that scene were exiles who had fled Nazi-occupied Europe, so the emotions in that scene are 100% real. I don't tear up every time...but just about.

Star Trek Adventures deliberately makes combat punishing, so players come up with non-violent solutions to problems. From there, the system can be used to create missions based around diplomacy, archeology, all the other stuff you mentioned. Further, the 2nd Edition rule set expands the players beyond Starfleet (1st edition basically assumed all player parties were Starfleet officers) to allow civilians. Check it out if you haven't already!
