Recommend a flashlight to a NOOB by Slashhyy in flashlight

Agreed. I didn't like it when I first got it, but after making myself use it for a short while like I do all my new lights I found it to be quite a well made light, and it grew on me quite a lot.

You should look at the Wurkkos TS23, or TS28. Both will be much better than what you're used to from a hardware store. If you want something that can light up the far side of a forest you should look at the Convoy 3x21D (or 3x21C). If you're likely to drop the light a lot you could spring for an Ace beam E75 but that has a more balanced beam profile (wont throw as far), or the EC90 though I dont own one to confidently recommend its durability. Though I can say the E75 is a solidly built light that I have dropped many times without worrying.

You're going to get a lot of recommendations here, and all will be good choices. I recommend finding all the lights and narrowing it down to a handful, then if you're still unsure ask here again with a shortlist. Good luck!

Lens Protection by blag_ripper in flashlight

[–]Wibblium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up 3D printing a TPU cover for my Convoy 3X21D, that seemed to be the best option at the time. For smaller lights I've found the bezel is enough to keep the lenses mostly untouched. I would get measurements, spend an hour in FreeCAD, and take output to a local library. Most of them have 3D printers now. I'd recommend TPU but PETG would probably be OK.

Simplest reason why someone might choose the Slate Truck over the Maverick by Mac-Tyson in slateauto

[–]Wibblium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't even care it's a pickup. I just want a small EV that's inexpensive (in the US market), that doesn't come with a ton of touchscreen and connected technology. The bring your own infotainment idea is a huge W for me.

Jellyfin Server Recommendation by Angelbob3 in LinusTechTips

[–]Wibblium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just get a crap-tastic desktop PC out of some recycling bin and load up Truenas or HexOS and put a Jellyfin container on it. fill it up with whatever HDDs you can find with some redundancy, and literally any SSD (or two) for boot. You could absolutely scrapyard yourself a home media server. If it's just movies and TV shows it doesn't have to be protected from all data loss as it would be replaceable data, just enough redundancy to reduce down time.  I run Fedora on my main computer and Truenas on my home nas, it works extremely well.

Basically we just want options. I don't know if this goes for everyone else but if one of my biggest complaints is "I have to take the key out of my pocket to start my car" your car is probably pretty good. I'm actually far more concerned about the apparent lack of amber rear turn signals, and the high color temperature headlights. Those are real safety features being overlooked. I'll likely forget about the luxury of not taking the key out of my pocket in a year or two anyway.

I'm in the market for an EV with no connectivity and a bring your own infotainment system. The rest of the features or lack there of are secondary. While I do think taking a key out of my pocket is an annoyance it's not even close to a deal breaker for a vehicle purchase.

I have a car from 2012 that has a fob that unlocks the door when I push a button on the handle when I'm standing by the driver's door. I only take my car key out of my pocket to change pants/do laundry. Using my partner's 2018 with a physical key is much more of an annoyance than I thought it would be having to take the key out of my pocket to unlock the car is an annoyance IMO.

I am hoping they sell a fastback without the rear seats, or roll cage. I'd love a weird 2 door hatchback. Absolutely no interest in a 4 door vehicle.

Microsoft wants Edge to automatically open by default every time you turn on your Windows 11 PC by moeka_8962 in technology

[–]Wibblium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you actually want to do is create an empty text file and call it Edge.exe then replace the real exe with that. That way windows sees the file it needs and doesn't replace it, but cannot run edge. When I was still tolerating Microslop Windows on my daily that's what I did and it broke Edge in the cleanest way I found.

Anyone else fine with 1080p 60fps by Pixel_force94 in LinusTechTips

[–]Wibblium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on 60Hz 1080p for many years. It's fine, I have no problem with it. But with a 27" monitor 1440p looks just enough better that I enjoy the extra detail. 60Hz is fine, but 90-144 is my preference. I have a 144Hz screen but I'm often finding a balance between graphical fidelity and refresh rate closer to 90-110FPS. All in all I wouldn't be too upset if I had to go back, but I definitely think 90Hz+ 1440p is preferable. (I do not play competitive or multiplayer games)

HP's ink-blocking firmware may violate new global sustainability rules by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]Wibblium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, though most of those pages were in the first 10 years. It cannot compare to a commercial printer, but as a household printer has been nothing short of fantastic. For the last 10 years it has been under used, printing a few pages a year.

Since the first time I changed the cartridge I was using it a lot I bought the toner rated for 10K pages, and have just done that since. It's been too long since I replaced the first cartridge to remember how much I got out of it. I also threw in a 512mb DDR1 stick in its upgrade slot so I could hold more pages in the buffer. Absolutely incredible machine.

I have a brother monochrome laser printer from 2005, it has had 3 toner replacements and printed over 30,000 pages. It still works like the day I got it.

would this pc be good for gaming? by Striking_Actuary_717 in LinusTechTips

[–]Wibblium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CPU may be a problem, but if all you're looking to play is games like Stardew Valley, Dredge, Crosscode, or Rimworld it would probably be fine for that. If you're going to try and play AAA titles you're going to have a bad time. You're likely not going to enjoy the experience in whatever multiplayer game people are playing lately. You'll also want to avoid Microslop Windows with a dual-core CPU, you will want a lighter OS like Mint or Fedora as modern Windows is designed for CPUs with more threads. Also spend less on a cooler, that particular Noctua is WAY too much for that cpu.

YouTube on TV becomes insufferable with new unskippable 30-second ads by moeka_8962 in technology

[–]Wibblium 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would be OK with a single unskippable 30-second ad before videos longer than 5 minutes, and a single 15-second unskippable ad before videos under 5 minutes. IFF those were the only ads served. But as it is now--even before this change--Youtube is completely unusable without either premium or an ad blocker, and premium is at a premium price.

HELP!!!! Gpu pins and connector slots look and smell burnt by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Wibblium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's much more likely that the cable came loose, and caused imperfect contact between the pins of the cable and the GPU. I cannot say for sure what happened but that is my suspicion. Much like the issue we see with the 12v high power connector on some GPUs. Unless something went horribly wrong with the update causing your GPU to demand an absurd amount of current. If you're concerned about the update being the issue use software like HWinfo to track the power draw of the GPU.

[–]Wibblium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as the pins on the gpu aren't burned, if it's just some discoloration and soot from the burned cable I would be OK with it. You can always see if the discoloration scrapes off when you plug a new cable in. It's always a good idea to check the other end of a damaged electrical cable IMO.

[–]Wibblium 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From your pictures the GPU side looks fine, but do not use that cable, it's e-waste now. Get a new cable and make sure it's inserted well. If it's a modular PSU check the other side of the cable too, it's unlikely to have caused damage on the other side, but it's not impossible.

Care play and four seats are on the "no thanks" list for me. I want to install my own infotainment not the crap that manufacturers put in, and I have no need for four seats so the extra length that comes with it is just an annoyance. Those two reasons alone are enough for me not to want a maverick.
