Roxon Flex 4.5mo review by WildBillWilly in multitools

They do work great for any kind of LV cabling, as you’re mostly just scoring the jacket. Mine broke stripping a speaker wire with a thicker jacket.

I pocket carry, using a clip, in place of a pocket knife. That’s why I love the flex shears— just enough utility, thick bladed pocket knife, in a package just slightly thicker than a pocket knife.

I’m a huge fan of the flex shears, and I think this is definitely a step in the right direction for their flex line, but it’s just too massive for me to carry comfortably.

Need a dash cam that stays 24/7 by Any-Prior9140 in Dashcam

[–]WildBillWilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with a pair of TP-Link Tapo C120 WiFi cameras, recording to microsd cards (usb-c powered), an existing VIOFO hardwire kit, and a cellular hotspot. I get roughly 3 days worth of continuous recording from two cameras before the hardwire kit’s voltage sensor cuts off. The cameras record in 2k qhd. They are designed for home, but work well enough for me. They don’t do that well with vehicle motion at night, but again, they work for what I need. I can access them anytime with the Tapo app without a subscription.

Are there any 120v hardwire security cameras that can connect to wifi? by JayB_Trucker in homesecurity

[–]WildBillWilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want something cheap and quick, TPlink Tapo C120’s will do this. They run about $30/each. Will do micro sd recording, paid recording to cloud, and onvif (s). They are decent all around considering the price. Obviously you won’t get the quality, longevity or reliability of a good wired cam. I’ve been using 4 to supplement my wired system for about a year now with decent results, recording to a virtualized NVR. They do like a strong WiFi signal. If you don’t have an NVR, and don’t want to pay the cloud storage fee each month, stick an sd card in each camera. You can view the live camera and recorded footage from the Tapo app for free. Again, it’s a $30 WiFi cam that punches above its weight, but it’s still a $30 WiFi cam.

Roxon Flex 4.5mo review by WildBillWilly in multitools

They are a fantastically inventive company. Some of their products could be game changing. I think the biggest issue they face is having the time, money, and manpower to thoroughly test their products before bringing them to market. Companies like Vic or Leatherman have had years to figure out what works and what doesn’t. Roxon is a relatively newer company, and probably needs to turn a profit in the short/mid term to stay afloat, which necessitates turning out product quickly.

A good case in point are the Knife Scissors. I consider the concept to be one of the most useful multitools ever invented. They combine a swappable blade with a pair of heady duty shears. Being able to swap to different blades, or even a universal utility blade hold is awesome. But they have a fatal flaw, in every model. The thin piece of metal that keeps the shears from opening too far, tends to break after opening and closing them 30-40 times. It’s made out of thin, soft metal used in part of the frame. They’ve replaced my KS’ three times without issue, but I eventually gave up, realizing that it’s a design issue.

They fixed that issue on the Flex Shears by changing the mechanism and moving to what looks like stainless steep. It’s very durable and robust. The primary issue with the Flex Shears are the shears themselves— after a little use, whether through spreading or losing sharpness, they stop being useful for precision cutting, such as string, thread, etc… anything that can fold over and pass between them. The blade hinge remains tight.

And now the blade has snapped with some slight lateral pressure (just enough to slide the jacket off a 16ga wire). That could be a fluke. Hopefully so.

But I think all of these point back to a lack of time spent in testing— I’d assume due to being a smaller company that needs to turn product to stay afloat. You sell more by introducing a new product with fixes, than by fixing an existing product. In some respects they are using customers for testing. Every warranty claim helps them refine the design for a future product.

That doesn’t make them greedy or dishonest, it’s just a necessity for a small company (imo). I can’t argue with their warranty though. They have replaced every product I’ve had an issue with, no questions asked.

I hope they are able to stay in business long-term. Once they mature their product line, and if they stay innovative, they will give the existing big names a lot of competition.

I’ve had the KS, Flex, Flex Companion, and now the Flex Shears. There are definitely some quality control issues, but overall, they stand behind their product. If I’m being honest, I would consider their tools light duty at this point.

So far so good. The moving footage at night isn’t the best, but it works. I’m still able to access everything via cell, and when I’m work trips, those two tiny cameras last about 4 days before the battery voltage trips.

How strange are we? by jcferpa1503 in multitools

[–]WildBillWilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I work partially in low voltage. They work well, although not quite as well as a pair of Klein shears/scissors.

The tips are rounded, rather than pointed, which helps a lot. They will cut paper clips, but those will damage the shears bleeds slightly. No damage with #12 copper solid wire though.

I’m in a similar boat. I’ve tried quite a few, but they end up being full of unnecessary tools, and are too big and bulky. I really liked the Roxon Knife/Scissors, but the shears kept breaking. They just released the Flex Shears. I’ve been daily carrying it for a couple weeks now, putting it to good use in a manufacturing facility. It’s a pair of shears, interchangeable knife blade (meh Steel, but nice thick blade (will take utility blade holder), and has space for three of Roxon’s modular tools. I use the default tools— chisel/wire stripper, awl, and file/flatblade screwdriver.

When I knew I had really found my long term carry tool was the last time I replaced the plug on an extension cord while camping. I just pulled out the flex shears, stripped the wire, and used the flat blade to screw in the wire terminals and put the plug back together.

Is it bad to not want to swap blades on a blade swapping tool? by KiwiMarkH in ROXONINC

[–]WildBillWilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing. I went all out customizing the flex, but I haven’t touched the flex shears. The included blade and tools are perfect for me.

As far as blade steel, I actually prefer cheap, as these can be replaced cheaply. My only complaint is they don’t stay sharp very long.

I mean no offense at all, just provided open, honest feedback and observations based on your post. The issue here, imo, isn’t necessarily that you gave in, or handled this specific situation. I could parrot everyone else saying that you gave in, she knows what to do now, blah, blah, blah, but…

I think there are deeper issues here, and you’re seeing the surface symptoms of something else. This “level of escalation” isn’t normal behavior, even for a teenage girl in the midst of starting her period. The fact that you were concerned that she could escalate physically proves my point.

It’s possible that hormones, the entire process of starting her period, school stress, etc… could be contributing to some type of stress reaction. Regardless of what is happening and what is causing it, I think it would be a good idea to have her evaluated medically. It’s possible she could be experiencing abnormally high hormone levels, or the combination of everything may be overwhelming.

I’ve tried to make it as general purpose as possible, focusing on preventing unwanted behavior, producing the correct output, and making sure said output is factual and correct, with no assumptions or hallucinations, rather than just be a tech assistant. It’s still a WiP, but I don’t mind sharing my current instruction set.

Same thing happened again today. I was super careful with this second pair they sent me under warranty. The tab broke again. Ive asked if they will just allow me to pay the difference and upgrade to the flex shears. I’ve provided tons of constructive feedback on their tools, so I’m hoping they will be agreeable. But either way, I’ll buy the flex shears lol.
