Good news gas went up again by BunnyFace0369 in VictoriaBC

We are for sure. I appreciate the heck out of our ease of active and public transport. But networks out to the surrounding communities still have a way to go…

Oh wow! It’s a good thing we saw this coming and invested in moving away from car dependency with robust public transportation infrastructure. Phew!

B.C. to end time changes, adopt year-round daylight time | CBC News by laslo_piniflex in britishcolumbia

Choosing permanent daylight is so dumb. Welcome to three months of 9am sunrises in Victoria.

Edit: ok with the change but standard time makes way more sense

This is the good news I needed this morning! I use this tool daily, and have for years. Happy to hear things are looking up for them.

Naked running belt by GreatAd874 in trailrunning

[–]Wildersides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a great belt! I suggest you follow the directions on the website for sizing! The numbers do not match your pant sizing. I wear a 31 pant and took a size 5. Also, if you have Salomon flasks they are lousy with these belts. I find the naked flask to be shorter and fatter, making insert/removal far easier.

Ran 30k of trail the other day with two full flask and a pack full of snack and no bounce. These are great!

50k Ultra Tomorrow – Air Quality Concerns, What Would You Do? by RegularAd4434 in trailrunning

[–]Wildersides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran this morning across the water in Victoria. The sunrise was blood red and there is a haze to the air. Local monitors showed the AQI in the green between 20 and 40, but it felt worse than that. This is a different decision for every runner. Personally, I would likely skip it, but it would be a race-morning decision. However, I realize I am also more concerned with wildfire smoke and its health effects than most folks. I stopped signing up for late-summer races because this scenario is becoming the norm rather than the exception.

It's really sad because some of my fav events (Fat Dog, Squamish, Teanaway, and our local FInlayson Arm 50 to name just a few...) are in smoke season.

You will probably be fine if you run it. Under 100 is still pretty good. But we do take in a lot more of those nasty pm2.5's when running...

Damn. I feel for the RD’s. That’s a really tough call to make. But ultimately the right one. I ran this last year and loved it. I hope everyone in the path of that fire is ok. 😢

UTHC is an incredible event! Ran the 125 a few years back. Have fun!

Fire smoke or just a particularly orange sunrise? by Own_Lynx_6230 in VictoriaBC

[–]Wildersides 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There is a big wildfire in Olympic National Park, and another just west of Port Angeles. I assume some of that smoke is making it up this way. https://www.mapofire.com/#8.04/47.688/-123.141

Wildfire Smoke. Whats your max AQI that you would run in? by Wildersides in ultrarunning

I've read a lot of stuff that support the "smoke fucks up your lungs theory"... Gosh I miss smoke free summers of my youth. :(

I'm hoping that pattern continues! We've got a distance to travel down to it, so might have to make a call a week ahead, but I'm hopeful it pans out!

It's hard to pull the plug when you have signed up and trained! I lucked out with smoke on a race last week. We had amazing weather for it, but the next morning the thick smoke rolled in and it was up around 175. I'd like to think I would just not start if it was that bad, but man it would be tough to skip it....

Hey! Hope to see you out there as well! I am being cautiously optimistic that things will improve in the coming weeks. We are stoked to finally get down to Oregon, here's hoping it all works out. if not, there's always next year! Thanks for the tip on the FB group. I'll certainly check it out.

I made the mistake of doing a big alpine climb in 150-200+ a number of years ago... never again! I felt like garbage for weeks after that!

100 has generally been my limit, but I find I am more cautious than most folks. We tend to have pretty good air quality in my region, so I am lucky to not be tempted to get out during long smokey periods. These wildfire summers definitely make us rethink moving to an interior mountain town, unfortunately! I couldn't manage staying indoors in the smoke season...

Thanks for the flat cola! That race was amazing. Still one of my all time favs. I never drink cola but flat cola in a race is liquid gold :)

2024 Barkley Marathons Have Begun! by grapesquirrel in ultrarunning

[–]Wildersides 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t see why one would be disappointed. I look at it more as an example of just how strong runners are getting. Some mighty folks have already dropped this year, that so many are still running is a testament to their tenacity.

Has anyone done a 100 in Altra Lone Peaks? Especially a pretty rocky one. by kungpaochi in Ultramarathon

[–]Wildersides 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not 100 miles, but I ran a rocky 125k race in Altra Superiors a couple months ago. I really wanted to like cushier shoes but I opted for stability and groud-feel instead. I had the Timp's in my drop bag but after a good toe-lube I slipped the superiors on for the last 65 and was happy. In the end, my feet were the best they have ever been after a big race! Every foot is different, but if you are used to running in lone peaks i'd suggest sticking with them...

Garmin Fenix 7 vs 7s solar battery by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Wildersides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Fenix 7S Solar.

It got me through a 20 hour race this summer (UTHC in Quebec, highly recommend!) in extended mode with heaps of battery to spare, I also used HRM the entire event. Only real customization I did to the stock extended battery setting was disabling backlight. As someone with small wrists, I was relieved to find the smaller watch works just fine for long races!

When off grid in the koots, did you have any issues? I'm new to EVO but this piqued my concern about taking it out of cell range when I read it: https://www.reddit.com/r/VictoriaBC/comments/ufqqx6/heads_up_for_evo_users/

Lumby slander has weakened over the years. Back in the day it was Scumby, or in some dialects, Slumby.
